Movie Preview — Sanjay Leela Bhansali ’s Saawariya
One of 2007’s most awaited releases for many reasons, Saawariya, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, is the first Bollywood flick produced (partly) by a Hollywood studio. Get ready for this season’s most romantic flick that has the quintessential Bhansali touch—larger-than-life sets, soul-stirring music, turbulent emotions and an amazing star cast.

Starring: Ranbir Kapoor, Sonam Kapoor, Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee and Zohra Sehgal
Music: Monty Sharma, Sanjay Leela Bhansali (Guest Composer)
Lyrics: Sameer, Nusrat Badr, and Sandeep Nath
Releasing on: 9 November 2007
The entire nation has been awaiting the debut of Ranbir Kapoor (Rishi & Neetu Kapoor ’s son) and Sonam Kapoor ( Anil Kapoor ’s daughter). Bollywood fans are not going to be disappointed. Fresh face Ranbir is quite a surprise package—the lanky frame, adorable smile and perky dance movements are unmistakable; while Sonam is every bit of a dainty and charming damsel.
The story is about Raj ( Ranbir Kapoor ), a 22-year old dreamer, who loves prattling riddles and poetry as much as he enjoys bickering with his landlady. He is a delight to have around, winning people’s heart in an instant. In a beautiful town, reminiscent of Venice (it’s evidently Simla, by the way), Raj stumbles upon Sakina ( Sonam Kapoor ), a bashful, mysterious girl, who intrigues him to no end. Their meeting on a lone bridge on a silent, starry night is the beginning of whirlwind journey, overflowing with romance, passion and madness. Here begins a fascinating friendship between the two that unfolds over four successive nights. While Raj loves Sakina unconditionally, hoping to win her heart, he is also faced with her haunting past, putting the young couple’s faith in each other to test.
The music of Saawariya is quite a rage already, especially the title track sung by Shail Hada, and Jab Se Tere Naina, an awfully endearing rendition by Shaan. The sets, designed by Omung Kumar and wife Vanita are simply stunning, with paintings on the walls and curtains, bobbling Venetian boats, music clubs and quaint cafes.
Sadly, the presence of Salman Khan and Rani Mukherjee is thoroughly missed in the promos, even though they are the supporting cast. Something to look out for—Ranbir and Sonam’s chemistry; they deny being a couple in real life; we think otherwise! The movie releases on the same day as SRK-starrer Om Shanthi Om. But Bhansali being Bhansali shouldn’t really worry!
