Eklavya :- The Royal Guard
Ekalvya : The royal Guard, under the banner of Vidhu Vinod Chopra, a strong star cast, and a perfect premiere has set fantastic release for the film. The film surely enters the list of best films releasing this year.
The Film tells story of Eklavya(Amitabh Bachchan), who is the royal guard of the royal dynasty of Devigarh. He as heirarchical history of nine generations serving the dynasty. His objective is to protect the majestic fort, dynasty, king, serve the royals and guard their secrets.
The film starts with Bachchan sonorously recalling the story of Eklavya, from the Mahabharata. Throughout the film, the legend is invoked obliquely as well as directly by the characters reeling off Sanskrit sayings on what is dharma. Set in the early years of Indian Independence, the movie involves a casteist, jealous and ungrateful ruler Rana Jayawardhan.
Prince Harshwardhan (Saif Ali Khan), who had been in London and unable to cope with the rude customs returns to the kingdom, due to the death of the queen Rani Suhasinidevi [Sharmila Tagore], His return to his kingdom brings lots of joy to mentally challenged twin sister, Princess Nandini (Raima Sen) and his childhood love, Rajewsari (Vidya Balan), the daughterof a chauffer (Parikshat Sahni). Both are happy to meet each other. But their joy is struck by evil. The king Rana Jaywardhan (Boman Irani), influenced by his brother, Rana Jyotiwardhan (Jackie Shroff) and nephew Udaywardhan (Jimmy Shergill) commits atrocities with poor farmers of his kingdom, and renders them landless. This is followeda by a rebellion by the villagers whose lands are confiscated by the greedy ruler Rana Jyotiwardhan (Jackie Shroff) and Udaywardhan (Jimmy Shergill) just want a chance to grab the royal palace and wealth. And then, the king receives a threat for life over a telephone. Pannalal Chohar (Sanjay Dutt), a responsible but “untouchable” police officer, is called to resolve the case. But he might be too late. The fragile peace of the land is suddenly shattered by a barrage of bullets. And amidst the mayhem, the safely guarded secrets of the fort are unveiled.Eklavya who provides the far more potent and complex hero. He is faced with an insurmountable dilemma, whether to honour the code of the royal guard or spare the life of his son.
The film continues with lots of hair raising scenes which leaves the audience glued to their seat. Chopra has staged quite a few well-edited scenes, especially when a blindfolded Bachchan is testing his archery skills. Both Amitabh Bachchan and Saif Ali Khan grab lots of attention. Vidya Balan looks lovely in her limited character. All this make Ekalvya : The royal Guard, a film worth watchable.
