Witness turns hostile in Salman Khan’s hit and run case

Actor Salman Khan, facing charges of killing one person in a road accident four years ago, had a breather Thursday when a witness retracted his earlier statement indicting the Bollywood star.Abdul Rauf Sheikh, an eyewitness in the 2002 case in which an inebriated Khan is alleged to have rammed his car into a bakery in western Mumbai killing one and injuring four, turned hostile in a city court.

In September 2002, actor Salman Khan lost control of his car near the American Express Bakery, Bandra which led to the death of one person and caused injury to four people. Salman Khan was charged and booked but was later released on bail. The case was left hanging due to several problems, like Salman’s driver absconding and witnesses too who had not appeared in court. However recently some of the witnesses appeared before the court and unfortunately one of the main witnesses who was also injured during the accident changed his statement before the court.

In his earlier statement to the police, witness Abdullah Sheikh claimed that he had seen Salman Khan come out of his vehicle after the accident. But recently he claimed that he was asleep outside the bakery and when he got injured he opened his eyes and found himself under the car. He also claimed that he heard people saying “Salman come out of the car”, but he did not himself see the actor.

This may definitely come as a setback for the prosecution, but it is certainly a relief for Salman who has been facing one legal battle after the other for his poaching cases. In another drawback for the prosecution, additional public prosecutor in the Salman Khan hit and run case, Gulab Nagrale was recently transferred to the Police Training Center in Marol where he will teach law to aspiring police officers. Nagrale has been an active public prosecutor since the last 17 years and he is also a member of the Bombay Bar Council.

Nagrale too confirmed that he had received the order of the transfer, but he was unaware of the details of the transfer. According to some sources Nagrale was transferred as he was instrumental in the transfer of S P Nikam who is now the Director of public prosecution.
