Revisiting Umrao Jaan with Aishwarya Rai
After ‘Don’ Bollywood witnessed the classic remake of Umrao Jaan, featuring the glamorous Aishwarya Rai as against the bold Abhishek Bachchan, although the word ‘remake’ seems to bother its veteran filmmaker, J. P. Dutta a lot. Based on the book, Umrao Jaan Ada by Mirza Mohammad Haadi Ruswa, it focuses on Ameeran more than Umrao.
Umrao Jaan">The pre and post release days of its release set the critics on their desk drawing comparisons and parallels between the Umrao Jaan of 1981 and the Umrao Jaan of 2006.
Adlabs, the worldwide distributors of Umrao Jaan is quite happy at the success of the film in overseas, especially in UAE, UK, US, Canada and Singapore. The film was released worldwide on 3 November, 2006. In India, however, the film is yet to catch the race, but is hoped to rope in big audience as time passes by. The music of Umrao Jaan, scored by Anu Malik has already topped the chart. The lyrics composed by Javed Akhtar have indeed recreated the nostalgia of the past.
Apart from Aishwarya Rai and Abhishek Bachchan, the other stars of Umrao Jaan are: Shabana Azmi, Sunil Shetty, Puru Rajkumar, Divya Dutta, Himani Shivpuri, Kulbhushan Kharbanda, Ayesha Jhulka and Bikram Saluja. The sets of the film designed by the Art Director Bijon Das Gupta are a real treat for the eyes coupled with the flawless Cinematography by A. Bose. The credit for the rich costumes goes to Anna Singh and Bindiya Dutta, and the Choreographer Vaibhavi Merchant has also done a commendable job.
Aishwarya Rai was indeed flawless keeping upto the expectation of her admirers. Her ethereal looks added glory and glamour to the film. Her onscreen chemistry with Abhishek Bachchan was also picture perfect. Perhaps for Shabana Azmi, Umrao Jaan meant something special as her mother Shaukat did the same role in Muzaffar Ali’s film. She, however, did justice to the role.
The film overall was a real revisit to those bygone days and would have been more alluring had its maker trimmed atleast four odd songs which seemed to be punched in. However, it ought to be reckoned that the subject chosen by the maestro J.P. Dutta was indeed a dare devil act, for to recreate history for a new generation is not so easy a task for ordinary mortals.

I have been going through the critics flying all over the media about Aishwarya’s Umrao Jaan and the critics in general about her. I feel that the Indian Media is biased and rather jealous about her achievements and popularity. I do not know what else one can expect in a roll like Umrao Jaan. She is stunningly beautiful and too good in her performance. All I can say is the media is incompetent to assess one’s performance. This is clearly visible when they appreciate artists like Isha Deol who neither has talent nor beauty!!
They are just jealous and nothing else.
