Madonna ’s adoption issue getting more complex
Pop superstar Madonna and her decision to adopt the 13 month old David Banda have invited the attention of people round the globe and a great media attention due to the ever emerging subtle intricacies of this matter. Malawi’s ‘Home of Hope’, the orphanage from where Madonna went to adopt the baby has been in the headlines.

The orphanage founded in 1988, is the work of 77-year-old Presbyterian minister Thomson Chipeta. There are around 500 children in the orphanage ranging in age from 1 to 18. The main aim of Chipeta is to provide them quality education so that these orphans can make their life meaningful. Whatever may be the opinion of the human rights organisations and the verdict of the court, Chipeta and the local populace is in all praise about the step taken by pop idol Madonna. The kid is presently with Madonna in London. But it is customary for the officials in Malawi to keep a watch for 18 months before the adoption gets final approval.
However, the Human Rights Consultative Committee (CHRR) of Malawi, which comprises of about 40 odd organisations threw a legal challenge to the singer, thereby challenging him in the matter of adoption. Curiously, Yohane Banda the father of the boy Madonna wished to adopt has aired his views in favour of Madonna. The father of the boy told that he gave the boy in the orphanage driven by acute poverty and criticised the human rights group for not coming to the aid of the kid when he was helpless. The 56 year grandmother of the kid, Asianati Mwale, was also in support of Mr. Banda and Madonna’s decision of adoption.
Things took a critical turn when speaking to a television channel (Reuters), the father of the kid Banda gave a contradictory view. He said, ‘Had they told us that Madonna wanted to adopt my son and make him her own son, we would not have agreed to that’. He added that ‘government officials assured that the agreement was such that Madonna would nurture and educate the boy but not take him away for good’. This statement of Banda is curiously a major shift from his previous statement. This has surprised the American singer Madonna, who is married to British film director Guy Ritchie. If the reports are taken to be true, then it would be a tough time ahead for Madonna.
