Sri Lanka thrash New Zealand by seven wickets
Mumbai, Oct 20 : Sri Lanka beat New Zealand convincingly by seven wickets in a main round match of the ICC Champions Trophy match here Friday.
Chasing a target of 166 runs, the Sri Lankans romped home easily by losing three wickets with 14 overs to win in the day-night encounter at the Cricket Club of India (CCI). Opener Upul Tharanga made a brilliant 56 while captain Mahela Jaywardene scored 48.
Earlier, Muttiah Muralitharan picked up four wickets for 23 runs to restrict New Zealand to 165 runs in 49.2 overs. The off-spinner was also adjudged as the man of the match for his brilliant performance. Sanath Jaysuriya picked up two wickets giving away 26 runs.
Both Tharanga and Jayasuriya started off well and the latter who seemed to be in a hurry made 20 in just 15 balls. He was out when he edged a Kyle Mills delivery to wicket-keeper Brendan McCullum in the seventh over with 45 runs on board.
Jaywardene then put up a 89-run partnership with Tharanga to seal the fate in Sri Lanka’s favour. Both the batsman fell to Jeetan Patel. Marvan Atapattu and Kumara Sangakkara were unbeaten on 10 and 19 respectively.
New Zealand captain Stephen Fleming equalled former Sri Lankan skipper Arjuna Ranatunga’s record of leading in most number of one-day internationals when he went out for the toss in his 193rd outing as a skipper.
The Christchurch-born Fleming, 33, has a win loss record of 85-94.
Earlier opting to bat first, New Zealand were bowled out for a paltry 165 in 49.2 overs. A last wicket partnership of 47 runs between Daniel Vettori (46) and Jeetan Patel (10) helped the Kiwis to get a challenging total, given the nature of the pitch.
The New Zealand batsman had a tough time getting the runs on the CCI pitch, which offered some assistance for the bowlers. The openers Lou Vincent (13) and Stephen Fleming failed to give a good start.
Fleming didn’t trouble the scores as he failed to open his account and was clean bowled by Chaminda Vaas in the fifth over with just 14 runs on board. Nathan Astle (42) played a patient innings, which lasted 74 balls.
The New Zealand middle-order crumbled as they failed to negotiate the Sri Lankan spin duo of Jayasuriya and Muralitharan.
With wickets falling at regular intervals and batsman failing to cross the double figure mark, Vettori and Patel bailed out New Zealand, which was staring at the ignominy of being bowled out under 100 runs.
The New Zealand vice-captain faced 53 balls and was severe on Vass, when he spanked the left-arm bowler for 19 runs in his last over.
The way Vettori batted, dismissed all the claims about the pitch, which even prompted the organisers to shift the final out of this venue, which is hosting any international tournament after a span of 11 years.
