Taylor guides Windies to beat Australia

Mumbai, Oct 18 : Fast bowler Jerome Taylor picked up four wickets to guide West Indies to a sensational 10-run win over Australia in the fourth main round match of the ICC Champions Trophy here Wednesday.

Chasing a target of 235, Australia made 224 by losing nine wickets in 50 overs in the day-night encounter at the cricket Club of India (CCI) grounds here.

Vice-captain Adam Gilchrist was the top scorer with 92 runs and Michael Clarke made 47.

Taylor who conceded 49 runs in his full quota of 10 overs also became the first West Indies bowler to get a hat-trick in one-day internationals. Mike Hussey (13), Brad Hogg (10) and Brett Lee (0) were Taylor’s hat-trick victim. Earlier, he also bowled out Australian captain Ricky Ponting in the fourth over.

For the West Indies, Runako Morton was the top scorer with 90 runs and captain Brian Lara made 71. Morton was also adjudged the Man of the Match.

Australia, the favourites to win the match, started the chase on a sorry note as the top order failed to fire. Opener Shane Watson, Pointing, Damien Martyn and Andrew Symonds were out cheaply and at one stage the World Champions were reduced to 81 for the loss of four wickets.

But Gilchrist and Clarke added 101 runs in the fifth wicket partnership.

Gilchrist was well set for a deserving century but was run out in the 42nd over. After his departure Clarke fell soon when he gave an easy return catch to Dwayne Bravo.

In the last 10 overs Australia needed 64 runs but kept on loosing wickets at regular intervals and in the end fell short by just 10 runs.

Earlier winning the toss, Lara and Morton steered the West Indies to a competitive total of 234 for the loss of six wickets in 50 overs against a strong Australian side.

Lars’s boys suffered some early jolts as they were reduced to 63 for the loss of four wickets in the 15th over. With regular opener Shivnarine Chanderpaul out to due to a stomach upset, Wavell Hinds was promoted up the order to open the innings with Chris Gayle (24).

But Hinds failed to deliver as he made only one and was out in the fourth over with just 10 runs on board. He edged a Nathan Bracken outswinger to Gilchrist.

Surprisingly, Dwayne Smith (8), promoted up the order, joined Gayle in the middle but was out soon in the seventh over. He flicked a Lee delivery to square leg and was caught easily by Hogg.

Ramnaresh Sarwan (21) then joined Gayle but failed to put up a good partnership as the latter departed in the 12th over with the team’s total at just 47. Sarwan also departed soon in the 15th over.

Lara and Morton then put on a crucial 137 runs partnership for the fifth wicket. Lara’s innings lasted 94 balls and included seven boundaries and two huge sixes.

The West Indies captain was well set for a deserving century but was out in the 43rd over when he tried to hit Glenn McGrath through the cover and was caught by Symonds.
