6-4 6-4 3-6 5-7 7-5….so who was betting on a Bagdhatis win, hold-on guys, the old war-horse is not finished yet. The entire 24,000 crowd of the Arthur Ashe Stadium cheered his every shot as the 36-year-old unseeded Andre Agassi edged past the Australian Open finalist in a match which went on until well after midnight.
Baghdatis committed 40 unforced errors in the first two sets but settled down in the third, breaking Agassi’s serve to take a 5-3 lead before serving out for the set.
“I got up 4-0 in the fourth set but it wasn’t my back that was getting tight, it was my throat, my breathing,” a smiling Agassi told the crowd.
“I fought so hard. This means the world to me.”
Agassi will next play 112th-ranked German qualifier Benjamin Becker, a straight-sets winner over No. 30 seed Sebastien Grosjean in the third round.
