KANK disappoints. A second look.
Most Bollywood movies are about finding love. Karan Johar’s latest movie Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna ( KANK ) explores the scenerio when someone finds true love after marriage. Atleast thats what we heard Karan say in those interviews.

But KANK could not justify how Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee ’s affair was more than lust or just boredom created by a few years of marraige. Rani’s character was the weakest one and Shahrukh was just eyeing another man’s wife. We expected a stronger script from Karan. We already covered a review Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna Review : A bold but risky move. few days back and discussed how this movie could prove to be a turning point for Shahrukh Khan ’s (for the worse) and Abhishek Bachchan ’s (for the better) career. This is more for people who have watched the movie.
The movie started off well with Shahrukh telling Rani who was about to get married to Abhishek about how one could find real love even after marraige. And since then Shahrukh did not meet Rani but later Shahrukh reveals in the movie how he was following Rani everyday at the train station and how he would miss his train while trying to pursue Rani. How could that be love ? And that too true love. Karan went wrong here. It was not love. Just frustation of Shahrukh (Dev) from married live and from failure in career.
Even as Preity and Abhishek try to win them back, Shahrukh and Rani book a hotel room to take their relationship a step further. The tears roll by Rani’s eyes as they cheat and make love. Somehow Rani’s character needed more work from Johar and was somehow incomplete. Looks like juggling with five big stars and their egos took its toll on the movie.
It was a watchable movie but not worth the $8 (add a dollar or two more for the internet booking) I spent for the first day’s show. And definitely not worth the Rs. 500 million Karan spent. So as some part of the media bashes the movie and some praise, I would say that Karan is a great director and this does not measure up to the movies we expected from him and the huge starcast he had. Three and half hours was too long to bear but the odds are that you are a fan of Amitabh Bachchan or Abhishek Bachchan or Shahrukh Khan or Preity Zinta or Rani Mukherjee .. so watch it for the stars.

And oh ! I remmember.. if you are in New York and your girlfriend whom you have not met for 3 years, is leaving for Canada, you do not need to rush to the train station with melodramatic expressions and music being played all over. Its not that you will never meet her again. Canada is just a few hours away, cool down and do not create a scene at the station. Take the next train instead.

Agree too with Haris, Sanjay.
KANK is a mere HYPED movie from once again an overated and overhyped Director called Karan Johar!!!
And agree with you Manohar, that SRK should break free from Karan and Farah Khan and start doing some serious cinema. He was a treat to watch in Swades, Devdas and Mohabattein.
I am sure he will excel if he stays away from Karan and Farah!
Maybe a comedy from David Dhawan will be good
May the force be with you SRK!! You are best! But to remain the best stay away from K.Jo and F. Kh!!! and you will beat the rest!!
