Sachin Tendulkar may take fitness test post-selection
July 13th, New Delhi: Sachin Tendulkar, now recuperating from a shoulder operation, may be selected for the Indian team for the triangular series in Sri Lanka next month even before taking a fitness test, according to a cricket board official.
The Indian team for the Aug 14-29 series will be picked July 20.
Indian cricket board secretary Niranjan Shah said that Tendulkar would have to undergo a fitness test, but he could be picked in the squad before that.
“Yes, it is a possibility that he is selected subject to his passing a fitness test,” Shah told IANS on phone.
“Team physiotherapist John Gloster was in London, and was to arrive in Mumbai Thursday. He will take Sachin’s fitness test and give his report to the board. The fitness can be done even on July 19.”
In England, he also played some charity matches for a private club, Lashings, and scored four centuries against club-standard bowling attacks. It is, however, not known whether or not he felt any pain in his shoulder.
On Tuesday, Tendulkar, 33, returned to Mumbai from London where he was recuperating from the operation on his right shoulder performed in March.
Tendulkar’s injury came to light after the Test series against England ended in Mumbai on March 21.
Gloster interacted with Tendulkar in London, though it was not known if he watched him play those matches.
Initially, the board had said that he would miss competitive cricket for eight weeks, including the seven-match home one-day international series against England and the subsequent two one-dayers against Pakistan in Abu Dhabi.
But the master blaster also missed the tour to the West Indies, comprising five one-day internationals and four Tests.
Sachin Tendular is now planning to return to the national team in the triangular series in Sri Lanka, also involving South Africa. It will, however, depend on his fitness test, which is expected to be held in Mumbai.
