Materazzi : I insulted Zidane but did not call him terrorist !
July 11th: Italian footballer Marco Materazzi admitted he had insulted Zinedine Zidane during the World Cup final but said it was the Frenchman had started the row.
Zinedine Zidane, playing the last match of his career, was sent off in extra-time in Berlin for head-butting Materazzi in the chest. Italy went on to win the trophy on penalties. “He was outrageous, so I insulted him,” said Materazzi in an interview.

Materazzi said Zidane looked down on him saying, “If you really want my shirt you will get it later,” after the Italian pulled him by the shirt. “I (then) used words which are common on football grounds.” Materazzi dismissed speculation that he named Zidane, who is of Algerian descent, a “terrorist” or that he insulted the French player’s mother. “I am ignorant. I don’t even know what an Islamic terrorist is,” he said, adding: “for me, a mother is holy.”
Zidane has so far not commented on the issue.
