KETAN MEHTA was here to release Tapti Roy’s biography of Rani Lakshmibai, The Raj of the Rani. He spoke to Poulomi Banerjee about his next 1857 biggie
What does Rani Lakshmibai’s character mean to you?
Rani Lakshmibai is for me a living legend. She is one of the most volatile characters in history, very fascinating and charismatic. She is representative of the various strands of Indian life at the time
There has been talk of Aishwarya Rai playing the title role. Has she been signed?
I am still working on the script. The cast will be finalised only after the script has been completed. But yes, we have had talks with Aishwarya. Rani Lakshmibai is a much more ambitious project than Mangal Pandey, much bigger.

Aishwarya turns 33 this week Oct 30, 2006
New Delhi, She rules the hearts of millions and is touted as one of the most beautiful actresses ever to grace Indian cinema. Aishwarya Rai, who turns 33 Wednesday, returns to the marquee after a long hiatus - playing a courtesan in "Umrao Jaan" and an oomph girl in "Dhoom 2".
The actress, who is said to be dating Abhishek Bachchan, will reportedly announce her engagement on her birthday. According to insiders, Abhishek's ailing grandmother Teji Bachchan is eager to see him married, and the couple is said to be planning to tie the knot early next year.
But Aishwarya, who is apparently attending family dinners and get-togethers at the Bachchan household, is tight-lipped about her relationship.

Indian actress Aishwarya Rai denies rumors of marriage plans
MUMBAI, India (AP) - When actress Aishwarya Rai does decide to tie the knot, she says she will shout the news from rooftops. Rai denied recent newspaper reports of an impending marriage with popular actor Abhishek Bachchan.
"For now, could Abhishek and I be allowed to concentrate on our individual careers, please?'' Rai was quoted as asking in the Mumbai Mirror newspaper. "I've absolutely no plans for marriage in the near future.''
"When there is a marriage, I won't hide it,'' she said. "I'll stand on the rooftops and talk about it.''
The couple star in "Umrao Jaan'' a remake of a Bollywood classic about a courtesan named Ameeran, or Umrao Jaan Ada, kidnapped from her home and sold to a brothel.
Rai plays the key role of Umrao Jaan. Abhishek Bachchan, Shabana Azmi and Sunil Shetty are also in the movie that releases later this week.
"Now people are setting dates for my marriage,'' the newspaper quoted Rai as saying. "They might as well decide the venue, print the cards and invite me for my own wedding.''
Mumbai, formerly called Bombay, is home to Bollywood, India's prolific movie industry.-AP

Indian Actress Aishwarya Rai Turns 33 The Associated Press Wednesday, November 1, 2006; 4:38 PM
NEW DELHI -- Bollywood's top actress, Aishwarya Rai, turned 33 on Wednesday and was planning a quiet day with her family to celebrate, a news report said.
The former Miss World-turned movie star was to begin the day with a visit to a Hindu temple in Mumbai, India's financial and entertainment capital, with her family _ something which she does every year, The Times Of India newspaper quoted Rai as saying in an interview.
"There will be no loud parties ... my birthday is a very private affair," she said.
"Considering I have to leave for Dubai on Wednesday, it will be over early too," Rai said.
