Beauty by my book

Someone once said to me that women are nothing if not beautiful. I took serious umbrage to this exceedingly shallow statement. More so since it came from a woman. Whatever happened to personality, character, intelligence etc? But it did make me think.

There are thousands of beauty contests and lists of the most beautiful women in the world, but no such acknowledgements when it comes to any other characteristics of a woman.

How does one qualify to be beautiful? I often ask myself who I would classify as being undoubtedly beautiful. After reading several lists, I decided to be the beholder. With two pre-requisites: I have to have seen the woman in real life (alas, I bid adieu to Michelle Pfeiffer, my all time favourite) and secondly, my decision would be based on sheer unadulterated beauty, forgoing the stylish and attractive.

I met her first at Chetana 13 years ago. Introduced by Queenie Dhody and Sharmilla Khanna, the four of us tucked into Gujarati dal and dhokla. Unfortunately, I couldn't finish my jalebis as I was so completely struck by Rhea Pillai's face. She was even more beautiful than her ''Hot Shot'' ads-not an easy task had you see the hoardings splashed all over Bombay in the '80s. Today she remains more so after motherhood.

Kamal Sidhu is the embodiment of beauty. She has a face chiselled to perfection. She definitely passes my test without much ado.

The original Yummy Mummy, a stomach I'd have to starve to death for and face one can only dream of. Ujwalla Raut barely needs my nod of approval. A dark horse who has flown past the winning post with undeniable flying colours.

Meanwhile, draped in an Indian traditional sari, bindi, bangles, mogras in her pulled back hair, darkly lined eyes, her cheek bones always in place and her attitude on her sleeve, Shobhaa De has absolutely no competition.

Ayesha Thapar-I have just one word to

describe her-devastating. God must have had an immensely satisfactory day while creating this female form. Few are as flawless.

She's petite, fragile and her dark eyes twinkle in co-ordination with her sparkling smile. Niyamat Bakshi is a stunner in a quiet, serene, yet playful way. Her face has the ability to light up even the darkest moment.

At the cost of sounding trite, Elizabeth Hurley, sans make-up, crumpled kaftan running behind her son to eat his broccoli, is a sight worth witnessing. She's statuesque and easily beautiful. Once transformed and ready to

take on the paparazzi, she's guaranteed to deliver the goods.

As a woman I could hardly get her out of my mind, I don't dare to imagine what she did to my husband. Aishwarya Rai in Devdas was ethereal. More so than Mona Lisa, she is beautiful from every angle.

Celina Wadia is her husband Jeh's summer breeze. For me, this Croatian-Australian beauty is the most potent cocktail. Her beauty is soft, genteel, almost angelic, yet spicy, saucy and sexy.

I must be one of the few women who'd rather see his wife than Shah Rukh Khan. Gauri Khan's face is her fortune. Radiant and glowing skin, she wields the make-up brush to perfection. She may be compared to Victoria Beckham, but I frankly think she's miles ahead.

No list of beautiful people is complete without Dimple Kapadia. The most beautiful part of her is the easiness of seeing her so comfortable in her own skin. She exudes the confidence without the immaturity of cockiness.

Exhausted, I fell asleep and as I woke up, reality came crashing in. I had the most bizarre dream that moi was Angelina Jolie. Unfortunately, there wasn't even a moment to bask in my glory nor the thought of Brad Pitt in bed, for clearly if there ever was a grain of truth, I would have been on the list and certainly not writing it.

Vidya was thrilled to know Aishwarya was the other contender for the role. “To be considered for the same role along with Aishwarya is an honour,” she says.

Two films of the gorgeous Aishwarya Rai will be part of an Indian film festival to be held in China.

Ash starrers Chokher Bali (Bengali) and Bollywood hit Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam will be shown at the festival, which will regale Chinese buffs who would get a rare opportunity to view them at festivals to be organised in the communist country beginning next week.

Ten films in different Indian regional languages will feature in the two-week-long film festivals that the country is holding in Beijing and Shanghai as part of the ongoing '2006 India-China Friendship Year.'

While the film festival in Beijing will be held from August 25 to 31, the event in the eastern metropolis, Shanghai will be organised in the first week of September, Indian Embassy in Beijing said in a release.

The film festival has been organised by the Indian Embassy in collaboration with the State Administration of Radio, Film and Television, China's media watchdog.

Films 'Roja' and 'Anjali' (Tamil), 'Juye Poora Xoon, (Assamese), 'Entee Veedu Appoontem' (Malayalam), 'Shwaas' (Marathi), 'Dweepa' (Kannada), 'Show' (Telugu) and ‘Chokher Bali’ (Bengali) will be shown at the festival.

Apart from ‘Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam’ another Bollywood hit Dil Chahta Hai will also feature in the film festival.
