Who will be the new Seleção captain?

These are the names which we can think of the best. Tho the 2006 World Cup did not prosper up to our expectations, these players have created a niche and they are one the most  sought after players. Tho there are speculations that Emerson may not join the Seleção for the 2010 World Cup he will be with the squad. Despite Ronaldo's performance, there are no doubts on his abilities and experience and the same applies to Ronaldinho when it comes to abilities.

Please do note that I do take this poll very very seriously. Dead serious. I dont appreaciate ppl just coming by and ticking the boxes without even having the slightest bit of knowledge as to the purported players background and credibility. I dont find it amusing should you select a player to be the next captain for the Seleção just because:

-He plays for you favourite club;
-He has scored the most goals at club level, regional level and international level among others;
-He is the most expensive player;
-His woman is to die for;
-He endorses your favourite product which you religiously utilise or consume;
-He is modish
-HE IS GOOD LOOKING.

Please make this real cuz there is a reason why I started this poll. So inorder to ensure that this poll goes by my way, I have decided that once you have selected your choice of player, please proceed to post your choice as well as to give reasons as to why that particular player has been your choice. With this, the poll results can be tabulated accordingly.

So go on and vote. Lets not make this a favourite poll but a highly critical poll.

My choice is Emerson. One of the talented midfielders in the Seleção. He may not have scored goals at the World Cup but its an undeniable fact that he did his part well by being very defensive. The match against Australia was when he made it really hard for Mark Viduka and Tim Cahill to unlock themselves from his constant prey. He's not named Puma for nothing.

Apart from that Emerson has got the experience as well. He played at the 1998 World Cup replacing Romario at the very last minute. He was also the original captain for the 2002 World Cup but he had to be kept out of the  Seleção as he dislocated his shoulder in training before the first game.

The best thing about him is that he can find the perfect space to juggle the ball and give a decent cross-finish. He is also a team player with the ability to keep the team united, just like Cafu. He earns his respect and is easy with the squad and to me thats the most important aspect of being a captain.

For me its Dida.

AC Milan

-Despite controversies the 02-03 season in Milan proved his ability.

-During the 03 Champions League final against Juventus, he did 3 fantastic saves against David Trezeguet, Marcelo Zalayeta and Paolo Montero in the penalty shoot-out due to a goalless score and helped the Rossoneri win their sixth CL title and gained him worldwide prominence.

-He was labeled "Saint Dida" by Lance and Brazilian newspaper O Globo, while Folha de São Paulo chipped in with the headline "Dida pushes Milan to the top of Europe."

-Serie A Goalkeeper of the Year for the 2003-04 season as he conceded only 20 goals in 32 appearances.

-He was hit by foreign objects hurled by angry opposing fans and yet he kept a clean sheet as Milan clinched their 17th Scudetto in club history with a 1-0 win over AS Roma in 04.

-His consistent, eye-catching performances had transformed him into one of the world's top keepers and soon had pundits drawing comparisons between him and Juventus superstar Gianluigi Buffon

-Dida is a three-time nominee of the IFFHS World's Best Goalkeeper Award. He finished with the fourth-highest number of votes in 2003, was third behind winner Buffon and Chelsea's Petr Čech in 2004, and was the runner-up to Čech in 2005.

-He was also voted keeper of the year at the inaugural FIFPro World XI Player Awards in 2005, one of five Milan players to make the squad.

-He has also been nominated for the Ballon d'Or twice, in 2003 and 2005.

Seleção

-Despite fears that his poor 2005-06 season with Milan would result in his spending a third straight WC on the bench, Dida proved to be one of Brazil's best performers at the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

-He conceded only two goals in five matches as Brazil defeated Croatia 1-0, Australia 2-0, Japan 4-1, and Ghana 3-0.

-He did the most amazing saves for the match against Ghana and he kept his cool whenever he was fouled by the opposing team. Just like how Cafu shook hands with the ref after receiving a yellow card during the match against Aussie...Dida just smiled when the a Ghanaian knocked him down unintentionally.

-Due to his consistent play in goal, Dida was one of the few Seleção players to avoid the wrath of the fans and Brazilian media following the team's elimination.

-He assumed the role of captain against Japan when regular skipper Cafu was rested for that match, and also when Cafu was substituted in the second half against France, thus becoming only the second Brazilian goalie ever to wear the armband since Emerson Leão in the 1978 World Cup.

Thats the reason why I feel Dida should be the next captain for the Seleção. He too has the experience as he had been in the 02 squad tho he did not play. He is a team player as well and just like Emerson he can keep them together.

I dont mind if Emerson gets to be the next Seleção captain as he too truly deserves it. My next choice will be Lucio.

I'm torn between Dida and Emerson. But I had to go with Dida. He is one of the best keepers in the world and the pundits are all praise for him during the WC 06. He often assumed the role of the Captain whenever Cafu was unable to continue or did not play. Perfect team player who is often know to keep the team together. Known for his ability to leap like a panther and his scorpion saves.

Before the finals, the experienced custodian was singled out for unfair criticism by the Brazilian media. After the tournament, he was one of the few players to avoid reproach with his consistent performances in the Brazil goal, in spite of the Seleção’s lame quarter-final exit at the hands of France.

In fact, Dida conceded only two goals over the course of his team’s five matches. His safe handling and first-rate positional sense got the five-times champions out of some tricky situations, particularly in their Round of 16 encounter with a determined and dangerous Ghana side.

I like Cafu as the captain and I measure Dida and Emerson up to him.

Emerson. He's only 30 and will be 34 for the next WC and thats not a bad deal if one is to ask me. A really good midfielder and one of the best we ever had. Juventus Puma and now Madrid's Puma. Ppl consider him as a flop but ask any FIFA technical study group and they will point out that Emerson is the key player who midfields defensively. Never over hyped and very tranquil. The first choice to be the captain for the 2002 World Cup but due to injury he had to pass it on to Cafu.

I can think of only Emerson and that too after looking at all possibilities.

Dida is aite but he will be 37 in 2010 and will that allow him to be in the squad? No idea. Thats another reason why I choose Emerson.

Dida gets my vote.

Apart from the fact that he plays for my fav club Milan, he has a good track record and one of the best keepers. Good leadership skills and not ur regular showy person. Always alert and he has the experience too. Featured in 02 tho he didn play and of course 06. Tho am aware he will be 37 in 2010, he still deserves the band. Force and drive.

I do not know if I am qualified to express my opinion here as I do not know much about the other players. I would say if I have to pick between Ronaldinho and Ronaldo, I would pick Ronaldinho. Rather I would think anyone would be better than Ronaldo. I think his days are numbered. He was once a great player but I saw a very different attitude during this world cup.. a pretty take-it-easy attitude from Ronaldo ... as if he had nothing to prove and not much to achieve. Such a player is a liability and can bring a team down. IMO I think Ronaldo was one of the big reasons why Brazil could not win this world cup.

ON the other hand, Ronaldinho inspired the whole team with his performance and energy. He has been the fifa player of the year twice in a row but he gave his 100% and was giving his best. With a lot of years to follow and a priceless attitude I would rank Ronaldinho as one of the best complete soccer players I saw this world cup. An ever smiling face, a give-it-all approach and a team player... this is the kind of player I would want as a captain !! It goes much beyond how you play.. as a captain you need to be an example to the team.. and Ronaldinho fits the bill !!!

A perfect captain will be known for his ability to steer and guide. I saw that in Dunga, Cafu and now I see it in Lucio. Played in 02 and 06. He was considered one of the best in 06. Seleção's best central defender and one of the world best plus being a key member of the Seleção's defence. FIFA technical staff regard him as a pouncer as he frequently makes run into the opponent's half and this my friend is rarely done by central defenders.

Clean player and he set the FIFA record by playing 386 consecutive minutes without even committing a foul. You need someone serious to be a Captain and I see that in Lucio. He gives his 100 per cent and he is a key fixture in Bayern Munich earning him much adored respect from the Germans. Remember the UEFA CL match between Bayern Munich and AC Milan? Bayern lost for sure but Lucio fought till the end and after the match Kahn and Ballack apologised to Lucio for not performing as how they should. The coach did not get that but Lucio did. dequate respect.

Lucio deserves the band more than anyone else.
