Spanish football paves way towards club franchises
MADRID, July 20 (Reuters) - Spanish soccer's governing bodies signed an agreement on Wednesday that paved the way for American-style sporting franchises to operate in their leagues.
A meeting between the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) and the Football League (LFP) ratified proposals that would allow a club to sell its right to compete in the league to another club.
On this basis a team could also move its location without affecting its right to participate in the competition.
Spain's sports minister Jaime Lissavetzky said they were working towards setting up a new regulatory framework for sport in Spain.
'Professional sport is changing rapidly. This coming together and commitment to resolve controversial issues is a positive step towards achieving our aim,' he said.
The agreement also said that they were working towards making referees professional within the next three seasons.
The co-operation agreement between the LFP and RFEF was signed until 2010, clearly outlining areas of responsibility, ending a long-running power-struggle between the two bodies.

Real planning three more signings, says Capello
MADRID, July 20 (Reuters) - Real Madrid are targeting another three signings following the arrival of Juventus pair Emerson and Fabio Cannavaro, coach Fabio Capello said on Thursday.
'We have five objectives. Two are completed and we'll have to see how the others go. There is no rush,' Capello told a news conference at the club's training camp in Austria.
Italy's World Cup-winning captain Cannavaro, 32, and Brazilian midfielder Emerson, 30, agreed to join Real from troubled Italian club Juventus on Wednesday.
Real did not disclose the cost of the deal but Spanish media said they would pay about £13.5million for the pair.
The two players will be reunited with former Juve coach Capello, who took charge of nine-time European champions Real earlier this month.
'Emerson and Cannavaro have experience and quality, are competitive and there is no problem with their ages. Good players can continue to perform until they are 35,' Capello said.
'They will be important figures for Real and above all are team players. The most important thing we had to do was to sign a defender and a midfielder and now that is done.'
Capello refused to be drawn on who the other signings might be when asked if Juve's Gianluca Zambrotta was also going to join Real.
'He is a great player but it appears that Barcelona have an agreement with him. We are relaxed because we have Roberto Carlos and we'll see if we can get another player instead,' he added.
Media reports say Barca have reached agreements with Zambrotta and Lilian Thuram for a combined fee of about 19 million euros.
Real's new president Ramon Calderon originally pledged to bring AC Milan midfielder Kaka, Chelsea winger Arjen Robben and Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas to the Bernabeu, but has encountered stiff resistance from their clubs.
Real are also trying to sign Manchester United's Dutch international striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, but have had their initial bid rejected by the English club.
On Van Nistelrooy, who is also being chased by Bayern Munich, Capello said: 'We are in discussions and trying to sign him. Everyone wants to get important players but in the end it is the players who decide.'

Barca close to Zambrotta and Thuram deals
MADRID, July 20 (Reuters) - Barcelona are aiming to close the signings of Juventus defenders Gianluca Zambrotta and Lilian Thuram by the beginning of next week, the European and Spanish champions said on Wednesday.
'Conversations are well advanced but until everything is signed it is best to wait,' Barca sports director Txiki Begiristain told reporters as he returned from a trip to Turin.
'We are very optimistic and confident we can settle the operation before Monday.'
Spanish media has been reporting that Barca have agreed a fee of £13.5million for Zambrotta and £3.5million for Thuram.
World Cup winner Zambrotta, who has 58 caps for Italy, is under contract to Juve until 2010. The 29-year-old fullback can play on either side of defence.
Thuram, 34, has won a record 121 caps with France and announced his international retirement after losing in the World Cup final to Italy earlier this month.
A key member of the French side that won the World Cup in 1998 and the European Championship in 2000, Thuram can play in the centre of defence or at right back.
Juventus have been involved in a match-fixing scandal in Italy and last week were ordered to start next season in Serie B on minus 30 points by a tribunal investigating the case.

Getafe sign Argentina keeper Abbondanzieri
MADRID, July 20 (Reuters) -- Getafe have completed the signing of Argentine international goalkeeper Roberto Abbondanzieri and compatriot Lucas Licht, the Primera Liga club said on Thursday.
"As soon as I heard about the interest from Getafe I spoke to my representative because I wanted to come here," Abbondanzieri told a news conference.
Abbondanzieri was Argentina's first choice goalkeeper at the World Cup finals and moves from Boca Juniors. Argentine media have reported that Getafe will pay around 1.5 million euros ($1.90 million).
The 33-year-old has won three Libertadores Cups and two World Club Cups since joining Boca in 1997. He was voted South American goalkeeper of the year in 2003.
Licht, a versatile 25-year-old left back, moves from Gimnasia-La Plata to replace Spain international Mariano Pernia, who has signed for near neighbours Atletico Madrid.
"I have heard a lot about Pernia and am really motivated because I know I have a tough act to follow," said Licht.
Getafe, who are coached by former German international Bernd Schuster, finished in ninth place in the Primera Liga last season.

It's that time of the year again. Barca need to strengthen their defense badly. For a world-class team, it needs at least one world-class defender. Unfortunately, we have none. Puyol is a great fighter, but sorry to say he lacks defending skills. Similarly, Marquez has been transformed from a defensive midfielder to a central defender.
Real Madrid signing in Cannavaro tahts bad for Braca. He would be the perfect player for Barca.

agree that the team does need some reinforcements on the defensive end, but its not fair to say that Puyol and Marquez aren't world class. Marquez IS a central defender who can also play as a defensive midfeilder. He was brilliant in that position for Mexico and does a good job when he is put into that position for Barca. Puyol also has a great fighting spririt, will never give up on the ball, and his positioning sense will only improve over the years, making him even better.
As Barca are a team that always looks to go forward, there will always be spaces at the back that other teams will look to exploit and so the defense will always look suspect. But its not in the state of despair that u are suggesting. I do feel that there is a serious drop in quality with the likes of Oleguer coming on in defense, and I would like to see some better options coming off the bench. For me, William Gallas (Chelsea)would be a perfect fit also Christian Chivu (Roma)and Jorge Andrade (Depor). All good strong defenders with a bit of pace and who can add to the attack when needed. There is no doubting Cannavaro's class but at age 30+ he may not be the best choice for Barca at this point, too similar to Puyol.
