Valencia midfielder Baraja out for 10 weeks

MADRID, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Valencia's Spanish international midfielder Ruben Baraja will be out of action for around two and a half months after tearing a muscle in his right leg on Monday.

The Primera Liga side said that the 31-year-old had felt a sharp pain in the rear part of his leg during training and that subsequent tests revealed that he had torn the muscle.

Valencia will attempt to overturn a 1-0 first-leg deficit against Austrian side Salzburg in the Champions League third qualifying round on Tuesday.

They will also be without new signing Asier del Horno, who is recovering from a similar injury to that sustained by Baraja, and centre-back Roberto Ayala who is embroiled in a contract dispute with the club.

Ronaldinho defends Eto'o for cup win walk out

MADRID, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Ronaldinho has defended his Barcelona team mate Samuel Eto'o for his decision not to celebrate Sunday's victory in the Spanish Super Cup after being replaced by new signing Eidur Gudjohnsen at halftime.

The Cameroon international, top scorer in the Spanish league last season with 26 goals, left the Nou Camp before the end of Barcelona's 3-0 victory and did not pick up his winner's medal.

'What happened is understandable because he's the sort of player that wants to be on the pitch all the time and if he isn't he's unhappy,' Ronaldinho told reporters on Monday.

'It's better that he's like that than if he didn't mind not playing and we all hope that he continues to retain the same hunger to play.

'Anyway these things are best sorted out in the dressing room.'

Barca coach Frank Rijkaard had also played down the incident in his post-match news conference on Sunday.

'It is true he left early,' he said. 'After a match emotions are running high and it is better to sleep on it and talk about it the following day.'

The Spanish and European champions picked up where they left off last season with a scintillating display against King's Cup winners Espanyol. A neat header from Xavi and two well crafted goals from Deco allowed them to ease their way to a 4-0 aggregate win over their city rivals.

'Barca played well and there were some moments of spectacular football,' said Rijkaard. 'But it was only one game and we have to keep working hard. I'm very pleased that Barca made such a good impression, though.'

Barca will have a chance to add a second trophy to their collection when they play UEFA Cup winners Sevilla for the European Super Cup in Monaco on Friday.

I will be the first one to acknowledge the glorious culture, history and achievements of Real Madrid in the European Soccer.. Just i wanted to clear a couple of points and iam sure most of u will agree with me if u carefully manipulate on my points..Yea, agreed that Real Madrid r one of the giants in the European soccer, but then for the last few years, they have achieved very less in Europe and also in their own Liga..Well, if u gleam through the history of Real Madrid, all their major successes have come during the Franco regime which coincided with the presence of many luminiaries in their teams with Destefano and Puskas heading the list..They did maintain that record for quite some time but then, it seems they have fallen flat in the last 4 years..The reasons for this is definately not the lack of talent in the team but i think it is rather because Real Madrid has become rather market oriented now a days..Ironically, after they won the Champions in 2002-2003( remember they had won the previous edition too), they shockingly dropped the author of their success Vicente Del Bosque and their rock, yea the skipper who selflessly served them for 12 years, Fernando Heirro..

it was shocking to be polite and in the same season, they brought in David Beckham( obviously for marketing reasons and after all it is a well known fact that the incumbent has a great fanfollowing in the crowded asian countries more for his marketing strategies..) Also, they got players like Graveson who would never fit in the scheme of things and in the way Real has always been known to play their soccer..The result was all there to see..Well, they have not seemed to learn from their mistakes and it was a shock to see them sign players like Emerson (no disrespect to him, but then he is similar to Graveson in his style) and Cannavaro( 33)who is probably at the prime of his career.. They surely lack the players of the calibre of Redondo( a wonderfully gifted midfielder who could run circles aroung opposite players)or Kaka or maybe Ronaldino..These players r the playmakers who can alter the match with a single moment of magic and yea, another big mistake was to let go Makelele who was a magnificient defensive midfielder..And with the retirement of Zidane, the place he has vacated is very tough to fill and with all main stars hovering around or above 30( Ronaldo, Rudd, beckham,Emerson, Canna,Guti,Helguera, Raul...), i dont see them giving Barca a run for their money in the domestic league or in the CL , i dont see them advancing further than quarters against the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, ACMILAN, Lyon, PSV,Arsenal, Bayern..

It will be tough for Real this year. Addition of Cannavaro was crucial, but I think that key to possible success is Capello. He is a proven coach who has been succesfull wherever he went.

I still do not think that Real have the necessary depth, team spirit and mental strength to beat Barca in the long run of championship games.

Real need a true leader as a captain and a warrior in the midfield. Raul was a genius, probably the best Spaniard to have ever played. But he has disappeared recently, and I think it is mainly because Real have lost their game and concentrated on getting stars rather than building an United team.

I agree with the Anti-Real and I think that it all started when Makelele left. His importance is clearly demonstrated at Chelsea even at the age of 34!!! Real's defense is probably worse than that of Villareal or Osasuna. Roberto Carlos is a good player, but bad at defending. He needs to have two reliable centre backs to cover him. Michel Salgado is getting old, Helguera and Pavon should play in Segunda Division, and Sergio Ramos is not a CD.

And most impotrantly, ZIZOU is impossible to replace. My guess is Real will be in the top three at the end of the season and make it to the 1/4 of CL. But no more

You guys have obviously not been following Real Madrid for the last 5-6 years.

Real's problems began with the lost of Vicente Del Bosque. Even though Flortenino Perez had Marketing ambitions for the team, Vicente always focused on having a solid well balanced team.

When Perez got rid of Vicente, things began going astray. Florentino's focus was bringing money to the club and ensuring that the club was on sound financial footing. This came at the expense of a solid well balance team.

Florentino bought big named players which brought financial gains. Cheers for him for accomplishing that, but the team suffered for it (No titles in last 3 seasons)

But guys do i need to wake you all up ?!?!

Florentino Perez is no longer the President of Real Madrid. Ramon Calderon is now the President of the club, and he does not need to focus of buiding a financial empire because Perez aready did that job. As he said, he wants the team to win titles now and has entrusted Capello to get that done.

Haven't you guys noticed a change in Real's buying polices this year. Unlike previous years, the first buys the club made were for a good coach, a great defender and a reliable defensive midfielder. All this before they bought a striker in Ruud. Rumour has it that Real are trying to buy Lyon's defensive midfielder Diarra as well.

Real Madrid is a joke now a days with all overaged, over the hill players..
they will fail miserably this year which will lead the whole team being dismantled..i say, Capello will not even last a year in this pathetic money oriented club..Capello is smart and he will make his money and get off from this dirty floppingteam..

This is not the same Real Madrid of the past 3 years. There is a new President in town with different ambitions. A new and proven coach who is bent on building a solid, well balanced team.

And about Real not having any depth. Can you pick 4 defenders from this list: Cicinho, Salgado, Woodgate, Helgera, Ramos, Cannavaro, R. Carlos, R Bravo. Or pick 2/3 strikers from this list: Robinho, Cassano, RVN, Ronaldo, Baptista, Raul

So if you all want to do the stupid thing and not wake up and realize that this is a new look Real (not the Real of the last 3 years), it will only be to your own detriment.

Real won the CL in 01-02 not 02-03 which was AC Milan's CL. How can you forget that? I'll send you a copy of the game lol!

-I say Real is garbage!
-They have cheated and exploited diff political power during their history.
-Real is no class.
-Real has no long term strategies.

Capello might change smth and he will, but as soon as he goes Real will fall in misery again!
