Italy keeper Buffon to stay at Juve, says agent
19 July
ROME, July 18 (Reuters) - Italy's World Cup-winning goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon has decided to stay at Juventus despite the club being ordered to start next season in Italy's second division, the player's agent said on Wednesday.
'Gigi is going to stay at Juventus. This is the decision he has taken. He's prepared to play in Serie B,' Silvano Martina told Italian radio news agency GRT.
'Juventus don't intend to sell him and he has told them he is prepared to stay.'
Buffon, who is considered one of the best keepers in the world, was widely expected by Italian media to make a speedy departure from Juve following the club's spectacular fall from grace in the Serie A match-fixing trial.
Juventus have been at the centre of the scandal since it broke in early May with the publication of intercepted telephone conversations between their former general manager Luciano Moggi and senior Italian Football Federation (FIGC) officials discussing refereeing appointments.
Last Friday a sports tribunal stripped the club of the Serie A titles they won in the 2004/05 and 2005/06 seasons and ordered them to start next season in Serie B on minus 30 points after finding them guilty of conspiring with match officials to rig games during the 2004/05 season.
Buffon's decision to stay will be a huge lift for Juve, who still risk losing many of their top players including Italy's World Cup captain and central defender Fabio Cannavaro, French striker David Trezeguet and Brazilian midfielder Emerson.
Buffon, 28, made his Serie A debut for Parma in a 0-0 draw with AC Milan in November 1995.
He moved to Juventus at the start of the 2001-02 season. Since arriving in Turin he has won four Serie A titles and finished runners-up to Milan in the 2003 Champions League.

Punished AC Milan insist 'No-one will leave'
AC Milan are adamant there will be no big-name departures this summer despite their absence from next season's Champions League.
Milan were docked 44 points from their 2005/06 tally for their part in the Italian match-fixing scandal, meaning they will miss out on European football's premier club competition when the new campaign resumes.
They will also start the 2006/07 season in Serie A with a 15-point deficit.
Despite the loss of income generated by the Champions League, Milan insist they do not need to balance the books by selling their more valuable players.
'No-one will leave,' said a statement on the club's official website.
Milan did sell Andriy Shevchenko to Chelsea earlier this summer as the Ukrainian was eager to join the Premiership champions.
However, the club has reiterated he is an exception to the rule.
'After Shevchenko there will be no others,' continued the statement.
'Milan wants to make it clear, to everyone and with the utmost respect and seriousness, that contracts will be respected.'

AC Milan still aiming to win Serie A
CARNAGO, Italy (AP) - AC Milan is still aiming to challenge for the Italian league title despite starting the season with a 15-point penalty for its role in a corruption scandal.
Milan was docked the points - the equivalent of five wins - and banned from European competition for the upcoming season for its in the scandal that left Juventus, Fiorentina and Lazio relegated to Serie B.
"Nothing scares us. We've always been contenders to the finish and that's how it's going to be this year, no matter how we start," coach Carlo Ancelotti said Thursday when Milan opened its preseason training camp.
"If we start with a handicap of 15 we'll only have more inspiration to recover. We want to win the league."
The club introduced four offseason acquisitions - midfielders Yoann Gourcuff, Pasquale Foggia, defender Giuseppe Favalli, and goalkeeper Ferdinando Coppola.
Ancelotti seemed most excited about Gourcuff, a 20-year-old who scored six goals for Rennes in last season's French league.
"He's a modern midfielder, dynamic, and can be used in every midfield position," Ancelotti said.
Captain Paolo Maldini, entering his 23rd season with Milan at age 38, said his knees were in good shape after some offseason attention.
Maldini retired from the national team after the 2002 World Cup and praised his former teammates for winning Italy's fourth world title this month.
"I can't hide it, I too would have liked to raise that cup, but I was content to cheer for the guys," Maldini said. "They gave the world a lesson on how to play, how they stayed together and fought. Congratulations to them all and to (Fabio) Cannavaro, the captain who had a great World Cup."
Maldini said Milan's removal from the Champions League may have cost him his "last chance" to play in the prestigious competition.
"I feel like they took something away from me," he said.
Milan general manager Ariedo Braida took the opportunity to deny reports that midfielders Kaka and Andrea Pirlo were considering leaving the club.
"Kaka has never spoken with any journalist, he never said anything to anyone and he's incredibly happy to be with us," Braida said. "Pirlo? I spoke with his agent and also with him, I told him that Milan doesn't plan on giving away anyone and as far as I know he never said he would like to leave."

German federal court to hear appeals
BERLIN (AP) - A German federal court will consider appeals in November against sentences handed down last year in the country's worst match-fixing scandal for 30 years.
The Federal Court of Justice said Thursday that it would hear the case in Leipzig on Nov. 28. It did not specify when it would deliver its ruling.
Last November, a Berlin court sentenced former referee Robert Hoyzer to two years and five months in prison and Croatian gambler Ante Sapina to 35 months. They were accused of being part of a ring that fixed or attempted to fix 23 games, mostly in Germany's lower divisions.
After first denying the match-fixing allegations, Hoyzer admitted last year that he took money from a betting syndicate to fix games. He provided most of the evidence that was used in the indictment.
Lawyers for Sapina and Hoyzer tried to portray them as young men who didn't fully realize what they were doing when they put together the scheme over drinks in a Berlin bar.

Football: Buffon, Nedved staying put 21 Jul 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ROME: Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon and Czech Republic midfielder Pavel Nedved on Wednesday pledged to stay with Juventus despite the crisis-torn club’s relegation to Serie B.
Juve’s demotion and 30-point deduction, which they were handed last week for their part in the Italian match-fixing scandals, led on Wednesday to the departure of World Cup winning skipper Fabio Cannavaro and Brazilian midfielder Emerson to Real Madrid.
But Buffon, 28, and influential playmaker Nedved have both indicated they are willing to stay and help the beleagured Turin club.
Buffon’s agent Silvano Martina said: "Gigi is staying with Juventus.
"He’s ready to play in Serie B. There was a bid from Roma to take him on loan but Juve didn’t consider it.
"The club said what any club would have, Buffon is an international and they could sell him for a vast fee, there’s no reason to loan him."
The club’s talismanic striker Alessandro Del Piero had already said he does not want to leave and former Lazio star Nedved is also expected to stay.
Juventus sporting director Alessio Secco said: "Del Piero has told me that he and Nedved will definitely remain at the club."
Meanwhile, Inter Milan may be awarded the 2006 Serie A title, even though they finished third last season.
It had initially been thought that the championship would be declared void, but reports in Italy suggest Inter could now be handed the Scudetto.
Inter are so confident of being given the trophy that they have apparently prepared a space on the team’s shirts to allow the ‘victory’ to be recorded. — AFP

I have my reservations towards Milan. Inter and Roma may come out well. But I doubt I'll enjoy Serie A cuz its gonna be sucky and yucky. Most of the players are out in La Liga and EPL.

Honestly I dont find Inter a team to look out for. Since the big guns are in Serie B they may have a chance but Roma looks promising. And AC Milan might just fight a good fight. Inter are ok but Adriano needs to step up. He has talent but he just needs to step up.
