UEFA Cup games moved from Israel

UEFA Cup games moved from Israel

UEFA have instructed Hapoel Tel-Aviv and Bnei Yehuda Tel-Aviv to play their upcoming UEFA Cup qualifying games outside Israel, indicating Liverpool could also be spared from playing in the war-torn country.

Next week's games will be staged in a neutral country, news which looks set to be followed by a similar decision regarding Liverpool's Champions League qualifier against Maccabi Haifa later this month.

Liverpool are keen to play the second leg of their match against Maccabi away from Israel, where the security situation is so precarious there would be fears for the safety of players and supporters.

They will not learn until August 7 whether their wish is to be granted.

However UEFA have already opted to tell Hapoel Tel-Aviv they must face Slovenian side NK Domzale away from Israel on August 8, and to instruct Bnei Yehuda Tel-Aviv they must also find a new venue for their match against Lokomotiv Sofia on August 10.

Liverpool's trip to Haifa, for the Champions League third qualifying round second leg, is scheduled for August 22/23.

Latvia venue switch for Newcastle game

Newcastle's UEFA Cup second qualifying round first leg match against Latvian side FK Ventspils a week on Thursday has been switched to the Skonto Stadium, Riga.

The venue change is because Ventspils' ground has a capacity of only 3,000 and United are seen as a big attraction.

The match will kick off at 8.50pm local time (6.50pm GMT) with the return the following week at St James' Park

Israeli FA petitions arbitration court after UEFA ban

JERUSALEM, Aug 2 (Reuters) - The Israeli FA petitioned the Court for Arbitration in Sport on Wednesday in a final effort to reinstate two UEFA Cup ties to Israel after UEFA ruled that they should be played at neutral venues for security reasons.

'The IFA ordered its deputy CEO, Ori Shilo... to lodge the appeal with the Court for Arbitration in Sport following UEFA's Emergency Panel meeting which took place earlier on Wednesday,' an IFA press release read.

Earlier this week, UEFA, European soccer's governig body, told the IFA that Israel would not be allowed to host UEFA Cup second qualifying round first-leg matches which must instead be staged in a neutral country due to the security situation in the region.

Israel launched an onslaught on Lebanon after Shi'ite guerrilla group Hizbollah captured two Israeli soldiers and killed eight others in a cross-border raid on July 12. Hizbollah has since fired almost 2,000 rockets into Israel.

Hapoel Tel Aviv are due to play their home tie against NK Domzale of Slovenia on Aug. 8 while Bnei Yehuda Tel Aviv are scheduled to host Bulgaria's Lokomotiv Sofia on Aug. 10.

Hapoel Tel Aviv have nominated two venues in the Netherlands as an alternative to their home ground, Bloomfield Stadium in Tel Aviv, while Bnei Yehuda have named Kiev's Olympiyskiy stadium in Ukraine.

UEFA said it would make a decision next Monday on Maccabi Haifa's Champions League third qualifying round home leg with Liverpool set for Aug. 22 or 23 and Beitar Jerusalem's UEFA Cup second qualifying round clash with Dinamo Bucharest on Aug. 24.

Why do we have the UEFA Cup???

Personally I believe that this tournament has been de-valued ever since the Champion's League expanded to include just under half the teams in Italy, England and Spain

I mean in North American terms, its the NIT of college basketball, AAA ball of baseball, and the USFL of football

and like the USFL, I wish it would die a painless death

I know the money argument is always there, but UEFA is just pimiping itself out with this second rate tournament

The next 3 go to the UEFA cup

i just feel that the product is watered down now. It's possible to finish 7th in Serie A in 2005-06, enter the UEFA Cup, and easily make the semi finals or even win it all.

Seems like the tournament is watered down to me. The prestigue is gone. Even UEFA looks at it that way. The teams who do lose in the 3rd round of CL qualifying get a "second chance" by being accepted into the UEFA Cup...what the hell is that all about
The problem then becomes worse because the team that finishes 3rd in the Group Stage of the CL, then moves on to the UEFA Cup.

It's just silly

yeah, compared to what the UEFA Cup used to be, this version with the expanded Cl is crap. many years the UEFA cup was actually better than the Champions Cup since typically the teams in the UEFA Cup were on their way to winning their league titles.

that said, its good that its still around. give second tiered clubs something realistic to shoot for and gives their fans something to cheer for. a team like Sevilla or Middlesborough would quickly get anahilated in the CL, but its good that teams liek those can at least keep some hope to european success.

for the record, i really dont pay that much attention to the group stages of the CL since there are too many crap teams. i would prefer to restrict the # of teams than can participate in it and make something more exclusive, something that you really have to fight for to get in.
