Israeli appeal over UEFA venues fails

JERUSALEM, Aug 5 (Reuters) - The Court for Arbitration in Sport on Saturday rejected the Israeli FA's appeal against a decision by European soccer's governing body that two UEFA Cup matches should be played at neutral venues for security reasons.

'In view of the circumstances there is no room to grant the requested injunction which would cancel UEFA's decision,' the IFA said in quoting from the decision on its Web site.

Last week, UEFA told the IFA that Israel would not be allowed to host UEFA Cup second qualifying round first-leg matches to be held on Aug 10.

The decision forced Hapoel Tel Aviv to name Willem II's ground in Tilburg, the Netherlands to host NK Domzale of Slovenia. Bnei Yehuda named Senec's ground in Slovakia to face Bulgarians Lokomotiv Sofia in their European debut.

UEFA has said it would make a decision on Monday on Maccabi Haifa's Champions League third qualifying round home leg with Liverpool set for Aug. 22 or 23 and Beitar Jerusalem's UEFA Cup second qualifying round clash with Dinamo Bucharest on Aug. 24.

Security fears have increased in the Jewish state as a result of the conflict between Israel and Hizbollah.

Gretna 1-5 Derry City

Gretna's European debut ended in crushing defeat as lethal Derry City all but assured their place in the first round proper of the Uefa Cup.
Ryan McGuffie gave Gretna an early lead but Darren Kelly responded for Derry as honours remained even at the interval.

But the second-half was dominated by some masterclass finishing from Derry as they beat Gretna into submission.

Both Kevin Deery and Ciaran Martyn bagged braces as the strong Irish side ran out thoroughly convincing winners.

FK Ventspils 0-1 Newcastle

Titus Bramble scored as Newcastle took control of their Uefa Cup second qualifying round tie with a first-leg win at Latvian side FK Ventspils.
Bramble climbed above the Ventspils defence to head home Emre's corner 20 minutes from time.

An Emre shot almost deflected into the Ventspils net, while Damien Duff, Shola Ameobi and Scott Parker went close.

Ventspils had several chances of their own, with Shay Given making a brilliant save to deny Igors Slesarcuks.

The Latvian team had taken just five minutes to expose Newcastle's defensive frailties, Given's one-handed stop coming after Slesarcuks ghosted past Bramble.

Given was in action again shortly afterwards, cutting out a dangerous cross from Deimantas Bicka, while Vladimirs Kolesnicenko headed just wide with 17 minutes gone and Sergey Zangareev threatened with a free-kick.

But Newcastle, who enjoyed the majority of the possession, crafted a series of openings of their own.

A shot from Emre struck defender Jean-Paul Ndjoumeck-Ndeki and forced a decent save from Andris Vanins.

Ameobi headed a cross from Nolberto Solano over the crossbar and, with 27 minutes gone, failed to apply the crucial touch to Duff's pass across the face of goal.

Shortly afterwards, Solano played Ameobi through on goal but his strike was blocked.

Ventspils took the game to Newcastle after the break, with Kaspars Gorkss narrowly missing with a strike from the edge of the Newcastle box.

Andreys Butriks almost converted a cross from Zangareev and was later through on goal but wasted the chance with a heavy first touch.

Summer signing Duff was at the heart of many of Newcastle's attacks. The Irishman's pass created a shooting chance for Parker but the midfielder could not keep his effort on target.

Duff came close to scoring himself, shooting just wide after cutting in from the left.

But it was Bramble who scored the decisive goal, powerfully heading Newcastle in front with 20 minutes left.

CSKA Sofia protest over UEFA Cup ticket price
« Reply #19 on: August 22, 2006, 10:59:00 AM »

SOFIA, Aug 21 (Reuters) - CSKA Sofia have protested to UEFA following Hajduk Kula's controversial decision to make only expensive tickets available to their supporters for Thursday's UEFA Cup match in Belgrade, the Bulgarian club said on Monday.

CSKA will travel to the Serbian capital knowing their fans have to pay at least 60 euros ($77.36) to enter the stadium for the second leg of the second qualifying round tie.

'We've sent a letter to UEFA adding all the recent correspondence between the two clubs,' CSKA spokesman Atanas Karaivanov said. 'We made a complaint of Hajduc's violation of UEFA's fair play rule.

'We have the Bulgarian Football Union's full support and now we're expecting UEFA's reaction to this cynical decision. I can categorically say that no CSKA supporter will pay 60 euros for a match ticket.'

Hajduk fans had to pay only three euros to watch the first leg, a 0-0 draw, at CSKA's Bulgarska Armija stadium on Aug. 10.

The return leg will be played at Red Star's stadium in Belgrade as the facilities at Hajduk's home ground in Kula are inadequate.

Some 1,500 CSKA fans are expected to travel.

'(Hajduk) offended our club...Their arrogance will provoke a large number of fans to make the trip to Serbia,' said CSKA's fan club chairman Dimitar Angelov.
