Manchester United agrees to transfer terms with Tottenham for England midfielder
MANCHESTER, England (AP) - Tottenham midfielder Michael Carrick appears to be on his way to Manchester United after the two clubs agreed to transfer terms on Friday.
The sale of striker Ruud van Nistelrooy, reportedly around 10 million pounds (US$19 million; ?15 million), meant that United has been able to raise its bid for England midfielder Carrick. Although no financial details were revealed, United issued a statement saying that it had met Spurs' price.
"Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur can confirm that they have agreed terms for the transfer of the registration of Michael Carrick conditional upon the player agreeing personal terms with Manchester United," the statement said.
"He shall also be required to pass a medical that will take place on Monday."
Carrick, who plays deep in midfield, is the sort of player United has been looking for since the departure last season of Roy Keane, who moved on to Celtic before retiring. If he moves to Old Trafford, he will be United's first purchase of the summer break.

Jose: Superstars egos present no big problem
Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho is convinced he can control the huge personalities and egos at the club.
The colourful Portuguese boss has further swelled his star-studded squad with the captures of Andriy Shevchenko and Michael Ballack this summer.
And Mourinho admits he could have a problem if those players think more about themselves than their team-mates.
But, having won the Premiership in the last two seasons, the former Porto boss is not worrying about managing his players.
Mourinho said: 'It is dependant on egos and personalities.
'If these big players have the desire to win and think that the team is bigger than the individual then it easy to work.
'But if the top players think about themselves more than other things then we have a problem.
'But I want everybody to go in the right direction and put the team in first place. After that I think things are easy.'
Ballack will arrive in America on Sunday but Shevchenko certainly puts his team-mates before himself.
The Ukraine international said: 'This is a fantastic group of players, young players, and not just names.
'This is a great group and there is a great togetherness within the team.
'For me I always place the team first and it is a team that wins the league. I would just like to help win the Champions League.'
The former AC Milan striker believes Chelsea now have the ability to lift the Champions League this season.
Shevchenko added: 'Football is very unpredictable.
'There are many great teams, great players and great managers but this team's objective is to win the Champions League.
'You can't tell how things are going to turn out but this team has the quality to make it there.'
Mourinho was more than happy to know that Shevchenko was a team player as his performances at the World Cup - in skippering Ukraine to the knock-out stages - showed.
But he was reluctant to agree that Shevchenko will make the difference between success and failure in Europe for Chelsea.
The Stamford Bridge boss said: 'I don't like to put that kind of pressure on any individual.
'This is about the team and the reason we are champions is because we are a champion team.
'We know Andriy is a big player and has scored goals all his life and he will score goals for Chelsea no doubt about that.
'I read a few interviews with him in the summer and he said exactly what I said. He said it's about the team and not individual success.
'He will help bring us more quality and he has the kind of mentality we're looking for.'

Tottenham accept United fee for Carrick
Michael Carrick looks set to complete his protracted move to Manchester United from Tottenham after the clubs agreed a fee.
Carrick has yet to agree personal terms with the Old Trafford outfit but should have a medical on Monday.
A club statement said: 'Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur can confirm that they have agreed terms for the transfer of the registration of Michael Carrick conditional upon the player agreeing personal terms with Manchester United.
'He shall also be required to pass a medical that will take place on Monday.'

Dein confirms dialogue over Cole Chelsea move
Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein was unable to escape the continued speculation over the future of Ashley Cole as the Gunners were handed what could turn out to be a tricky Champions League qualifying tie, most likely against Dinamo Zagreb.
The Croatian side lead Lithuanian outfit Ekranas 4-1 on aggregate, and will be the probable opponents for Arsene Wenger's men when they look to secure safe passage into the lucrative group stages of Europe's elite club competition.
The hot topic of questioning, however, at today's UEFA draw in Switzerland was whether or not England full-back Cole, 25, would be playing at the Emirates Stadium when the new seasons gets under way.
It now seems Cole, valued at around £20million, is unlikely to remain at Arsenal after criticising the way the club dealt with the tapping-up scandal which enveloped the Gunners and Chelsea last year.
Dein revealed his club have had 'a couple of very civilised conversations' with the Premiership champions over the highly-rated defender.
However, the Gunners vice-chairman insisted: 'As we speak he is our player and unless something changes he will remain our player.'
Dein told the club's official website: 'There have been certain discussions going on, but there is not much more I can say at this stage.'
Wenger has admitted he cannot guarantee Cole will still be with Arsenal when the transfer window closes at the end of August.
However, speaking on Sky Sports News, Dein maintained: 'We are not resigned to losing him - only if an offer is suitable we want to accept.'

Fergie dismisses talk of move for Defoe

Fergie dismisses talk of move for Defoe
Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson has ruled out making any move for Jermain Defoe to fill the void left by Ruud van Nistelrooy.
The departure of Van Nistelrooy for Real Madrid has led to intense speculation about who should replace him.
Ferguson has also signalled his intention to push Alan Smith back into a striker's role following the Yorkshireman's one-year experiment in central midfield but it was still anticipated United would bring in an extra forward to provide competition for Wayne Rooney and Louis Saha.
Yet, in confirming an ongoing interest in Michael Carrick, Ferguson rejected the idea he could try to poach two Tottenham players this summer.
'There has not been any interest from us (in Defoe),' Ferguson told MUTV.
'As far as the Tottenham situation is concerned, we made a move for Michael Carrick - but that is all we did.
'He is the only Tottenham player we are interested in at the moment and I think it will stay that way.'
Instead, it appears Ferguson is ready to place his trust in rising star Giuseppe Rossi to be United's fourth striker this term.
On the Red Devils' recent South Africa tour, Ferguson admitted he wanted to let Rossi leave Old Trafford on loan for six months in an effort to further his footballing education.
The teenager immediately claimed he wanted to stay at United and try to force his way into the first-team on a regular basis.
Now, it appears he will get his wish.
'We want to see Giuseppe progress as a centre-forward and it is looking more likely he will stay with us now.'
While many United fans will be alarmed by Ferguson's decision, believing it weakens the club's chances of catching Chelsea this term, at least they will be appeased by the long-serving manager's pursuit of a key central midfielder.
Although it was widely reported a deal with Carrick had been done, neither Tottenham nor United were willing to confirm the speculation.
Instead, Ferguson thinks the Old Trafford faithful may have to be patient in their wait for new arrivals.
'We have targeted several players but in my experience, these things take time,' he said.
'We are not going to be stupid and just pay the price other clubs wants.
'You have to negotiate and sometimes, you have to be patient and wait for the moment when eventually, the two clubs agree.'
Apart from Defoe, one man who will definitely not be arriving at Old Trafford is AC Milan's Gennaro Gattuso.
Ferguson was ready to make a move for the former Rangers star if Milan had suffered a similar penalty to Juventus in the Italian match-fixing scandal.
However, by being allowed to remain in Serie A and, unless UEFA decide otherwise, maintaining a place in this season's Champions League qualifiers, Milan's bargaining position leaves Ferguson acknowledging any bid for Gattuso would be useless.
'We were waiting to see what was going to happen with AC Milan,' said the Scot.
'But they are still in the European Cup and Serie A, so there is very little chance of progressing that one.'

I am tired of hearing about manchester united and who they are going to sign. No one wants to go there- Riguelme,Ribery,Torres, diarra, essein, obi mikel, robben..... should i keep going. It is so pathetic that th had to spen $34 million dollars on Michael Carrick. C.Ronaldo wants out, rooney is a great player but hopefully man utd has a great anger management staff. They treat there players like crap....RUUD, The teams leading goal scorer can't get in a game and now he is gone and they think just Rooney and Saha with a old solsjaer and and super young Rossi are good enough. With Carrick, a decent player, with Oshea(a center back), Giggs(a 35 year old left wing) and a old scholes and fletcher(a scotland international)all in the heart off the midfield. please manchester is overated and i am tired of all the news headlines and hype being about them. They are a uefa cup team and no better.

Ankhi I feel ur frustration.
This is the year of the Reds. Rafa Benitez has quietly built a well balanced squad with quality players and no big name egos. He has adapted well to the style of play in the Prem and I think they realistically have a shot at it.
I'm not saying its gonna be easy, I am certain Chelsea will put up a fight and then theres always the ManUs and the Arsenals to consider. But trust me I have looked into the crystal ball. It is the year of the Reds. Put 100 quid down on that.
Just messing with u guys, But seriously what are your predictions for next season's Prem Battle

Being a die hard 'Pool fan, I would love your prediction to bear fruit.
I agree that Rafa has built a good business-like squad, with some low ego, yet very talented individuals.
Yes, IF IF IF all goes well according to theory, Liverpool do have an honest chance. But, the squad is still too small. They don't have the funds to escape that dreaded reliance on the likes of Gerrard, Alonso and possibly Bellamy. If 2 star players are injured, or decide to sulk for a bit, the rest of the TEAM is stuffed. Put 100 quid on them, but put the same amount on Chelsea too.
