Smith refusing to rush Red Devils return
« Reply #408 on: August 22, 2006, 06:54:05 AM »

Alan Smith has ruled out the possibility of an early return to action for Manchester United after coming through a reserve clash unscathed.

The striker came through his first public workout since his horrific double leg break at Liverpool in February on Monday night, appearing for the first 66 minutes of a 7-2 reserve-team romp over Preston at Deepdale.

With Wayne Rooney suspended for three games, Smith's return prompted discussion over the possibility of the former Leeds man muscling his way on to the bench for Saturday's Premiership encounter with Watford.

Instead, the 25-year-old will remain restricted to second-string action during the forthcoming international break before a potential outing against Tottenham on September 9.

"Playing for the reserves is a step up from training and hopefully, in a few weeks time I will have had some more reserve games and then be able to make the step up to the first team," said Smith.

"I just need a few matches under my belt now.

"My movement was okay and I just need to build up my strength a little bit.

"I could probably have played all night and not scored but I have worked hard all summer to play in matches."

Although Smith did not get on the score sheet as he re-appeared in public exactly 184 days since suffering an horrendous injury charging down John Arne Riise's shot at Anfield last February, he turned in his usual bustling display, particularly during the first half.

However, in a one-sided contest, his contribution to this evening's game was overshadowed by that of young strike partner Giuseppe Rossi.

Capped for the first time at under-21 level by Italy last week, Rossi converted two well-taken efforts after half-time to ensur the visitors progressed with the minimum of fuss.

Phil Marsh (2), Chris Eagles, Danny Rose and David Jones were also on target for the visitors.

Tevez request puts United on red alert
« Reply #409 on: August 22, 2006, 06:56:07 AM »

Manchester United target Carlos Tevez has revealed he wants to quit Corinthians for a move to Europe after falling out with the Brazilian club.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is a long-term admirer of the Argentinian striker and could now make a move.

Tevez demanded a transfer after falling out with new coach and former Brazil goalkeeper Emerson Leao.

The pair clashed after Tevez was stripped of the club captaincy because he cannot speak Portuguese.

Tevez is valued at around £25million and United will face stiff competition for his signature from Bayern Munich and AC Milan.

He said: "This may have been my last game in the Corinthians shirt.

"I would like to stay but I have to think about what is better for me and my family."

His agent Adrian Ruocco confirmed: "Carlos wants to go to Europe."

Ferguson may hold the upper hand in the race to sign the World Cup star, given he has already admitted he supports the club and once turned up to a Corinthians press conference wearing a Manchester United strip.

Wayne Rooney and Paul Scholes both miss Manchester United's trip to London to face Charlton as they start respective three-match bans.
Sir Alex Ferguson is hoping Ryan Giggs recovers from the heavy knock he took in the 5-1 victory over Fulham on Sunday, when skipper Gary Neville only completed 45 minutes.

Gabriel Heinze and Nemanja Vidic (both knee) are absent for the Red Devils, as are Michael Carrick (ankle) and Alan Smith, who did return to reserve-team action on Monday night after his double leg break.

Meanwhile, Charlton will be without Djimi Traore.

Gonzalo Sorondo is likely to fill in at left-back, with youngster Nathan Ashton another option for manager Iain Dowie.

Costa Rica winger Cristian Bolanos is still awaiting clearance on a work permit, while American defender Cory Gibbs (knee) and winger Jerome Thomas (foot) are both longer-term absentees.

Charlton (from): Carson, Young, Hreidarsson, El Karkouri, Sorondo, Ambrose, Faye, Holland, Hughes, Reid, Hasselbaink, M Bent, Myhre, Rommedahl, D Bent, Lisbie, Euell, Ashton.

United (from): Van der Sar, Kuszczak, Neville, Brown, Ferdinand, Silvestre, Evra, Ronaldo, Miller, D Jones, Fletcher, O'Shea, Giggs, Richardson, Park, Saha, Rossi, Solskjaer.

Boulahrouz joy at £6m Chelsea move
« Reply #411 on: August 22, 2006, 07:03:51 AM »
Reply with quote

Khalid Boulahrouz says he is "delighted" to join Chelsea and reckons the "aggressive" nature of the English game will suit his style perfectly.
Boulahrouz, who joined the Blues in a £6million deal from Bundesliga outfit Hamburg on Monday, has a reputation for his fearsome tackling and is nicknamed "Khalid the Cannibal".

He watched Chelsea's 3-0 win against Manchester City on Sunday and hopes Premiership referees will understand his style.

Boulahrouz, who has 15 caps for Holland, said: "I played in the Bundesliga and it was a little bit of a problem with the referees.

"I saw the game on Sunday. It was very aggressive and I love the tackling.

"I've played central defender for the last couple of years. That's the position where I can show all my qualities. But right-back is not a problem for me.

"I haven't played a lot of games in pre-season but I am fit and I am okay. I know what to do as a defender. That's the most important thing.

"I am happy to play for Chelsea, the biggest club in the world, and I will try to give my best and play with my heart on the pitch."

Chief executive Peter Kenyon commented: "This is one that's happened under the radar and quickly. We've been looking at various options. This one came up and we decided to move. We were able to conclude it quickly.

"He has got a great reputation and will fit well in to the Chelsea team and Premiership football.

"His qualities speak for themselves. He will be a very good addition and I'm looking forward to seeing him soon."

The swoop for versatile Boulahrouz has increased doubts about the future of William Gallas, who says he wants to leave the club.

Gallas, who is out of contract next summer, has been frozen out by boss Jose Mourinho since returning late for pre-season.

Kenyon added: "He is not a direct replacement for anybody. We have moved players out this season and the squad will retain the same sort of size."

Bolton manager Sam Allardyce is set to name an unchanged line-up for the trip to face Fulham at Craven Cottage on Wednesday.

With only 14 senior players available, Allardyce does not have too many options anyway and will stick with the team which beat Tottenham on the opening day.

Ricardo Gardner (knee), Henrik Pedersen (Achilles) and Abdoulaye Faye and Joey O'Brien (both knee) are again all absent.

Bolton (from): Jaaskelainen, Walker, Hunt, Ben Haim, Meite, Nolan, Speed, Giannakopoulos, Campo, Fortune, Tal, Davies, Vaz Te, Diouf, Sissons, Smith, Fojut, Wolfe.

New Manchester City striker Bernardo Corradi misses the Blues' clash with Portsmouth at Eastlands on Wednesday through suspension.

The Italian was sent off on his debut at Chelsea on Sunday, so Blues boss Stuart Pearce must choose between Darius Vassell and Paul Dickov for the vacant attacking berth.

Recent signings Andreas Isaksson (ankle) and Dietmar Hamann (foot) have an outside chance of being fit but Andy Cole (knee) definitely misses out.

Manchester City (from): Isaksson, Weaver, Hart, Richards, Onuoha, Dunne, Distin, D Mills, Thatcher, Jordan, Sinclair, Hamann, Barton, Dabo, Reyna, Ireland, Sibierski, Vassell, Samaras, Dickov, Sturridge.

Ball condemns Rooney's FA threat
« Reply #415 on: August 22, 2006, 07:11:19 AM »
Reply with quote

Former England star Alan Ball has criticised Wayne Rooney for threatening the Football Association after it failed to overturn his three-match ban.
Rooney's agent Paul Stretford reportedly sent a letter to the FA warning the striker could withdraw from commercial England duties.

Ball said: "I'm disappointed in his agent and by Rooney for taking on the FA. How much power do players want?"

"He should accept his punishment, grow up and become a great player."

Rooney and Manchester United team-mate Paul Scholes were sent off in a pre-season friendly against Porto and handed suspensions.

Both lost their appeals to the FA and Rooney was said to be so "devastated" that he sanctioned Stretford's letter to FA chief executive Brian Barwick late last week.

Rooney is now reportedly waiting for an official response before deciding his next move, but 1966 World Cup-winner Ball believes swallowing his punishment will make him a better player.

"I was sent off nine times and deserved it," Ball told www.nobok.co.uk. "But I finished off a miles better player by taking my punishment.

"He has to accept that you have to grow up to become a top football player - and he will do if he takes his punishment on the chin.

"But he won't if he thinks that he can come out and make statements to the FA."
