Cole back in training at Arsenal
Ashley Cole returned to Arsenal on Monday for pre-season training, despite speculation over his future. Cole, who has returned to the club later than the rest of the squad after his honeymoon, is thought to be on the verge of a £25m move to Chelsea.
And the 25-year-old would have trained without any of the first-team squad, who are on a tour of Austria.
Cole's future will be decided almost certainly before Thursday's Champions League registration deadline.
Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein has already confirmed that discussions have taken place with Chelsea.
He has stressed that Cole would remain an Arsenal player unless 'something changes' - but that change is now widely expected.
Cole's relationship with Arsenal has been strained following the 'tapping-up' affair with Chelsea last year.
And the relationship has been further damaged by Cole's claims that he will reveal why his relationship with Arsenal broke down in his forthcoming autobiography.
"I'll reveal the shattering truth about who fed me to the sharks. It changed my view forever on the club I regarded as family," said Cole.

D-Day looms for Cole over Arsenal future
Arsenal left-back Ashley Cole returned to training today amid speculation he is set to join Chelsea in a £25million deal.
Arsenal confirmed the England defender had returned to training at London Colney following his honeymoon while the rest of the first team squad continued with their pre-season tour in Austria.
They are due to return home after their final game tonight and Cole's future will be decided in the next few days.
Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger will reluctantly sanction Cole's move across London to join the Premiership champions.
Relations between Cole and Arsenal have been strained ever since the player blasted the club over the `tapping-up' scandal involving Chelsea.
Arsenal vice-chairman David Dein has already confirmed that discussions have taken place with Chelsea but he stressed that Cole would remain an Arsenal player unless `something changes'.
Those initial talks are likely to gather pace over the next few days as Chelsea are certain to want Cole to be a Blues player by the time they have to register their squad for the coming Champions League campaign.
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger still insists he wants Cole to remain at the Emirates Stadium - even after the player's outburst over the club's handling of the tapping-up affair with Chelsea.
The 25-year-old, who recently married Girls Aloud singer Cheryl Tweedy, criticised Arsenal while promoting his forthcoming autobiography.
Cole said: ``Arsenal hung me out to dry, using me as a scapegoat to get back at Chelsea. The board `rewarded' me with an insult and threw years of loyalty back in my face.
``I'll reveal the shattering truth about who fed me to the sharks. It changed my view forever on the club I regarded as family.''
Cole still has two years remaining on his contract but relations with Wenger have became strained.
Prior to their Champions League final against Barcelona, the player revealed how Wenger had said little to him as he battled to get fit for the end of Arsenal's season and England's World Cup campaign in Germany.
But Arsenal will make Chelsea pay a hefty price for the player they have coveted since last year. Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho and Cole were both hit with record fines for their involvement in the secret transfer talks and relations between the two clubs plunged to an all-time low as a result.
However, Cole then signed a one-year extension to his contract which tied him to the club until 2008.

Carrick completes £18.6m Man United move

United agree £18.6m fee with Spurs for Carrick
Michael Carrick has completed his medical and is expected to be formally confirmed as a Manchester United player either later on Monday evening or Tuesday morning.
The 25-year-old England international spent the day undergoing tests before the formalities of his £18.6million move from Tottenham are completed.
United have pencilled in a press conference for Wednesday to unveil the fifth-most expensive signing in their history and Carrick has already been assigned squad number 16 - previously worn by skipper Roy Keane - ahead of a likely appearance in this weekend's Amsterdam tournament.
After spending most of the summer searching for midfield reinforcements, Sir Alex Ferguson will be delighted to have finally captured his number one target.
The United boss will hope Carrick's passing ability can offer an extra dimension to his midfield, which saw an unlikely combination of John O'Shea and Ryan Giggs deployed at its heart during the latter stages of last season following Keane's abrupt exit.
Ferguson will also look to Carrick's arrival to bring some stability to the club after a turbulent summer which saw Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo at loggerheads during the World Cup.
Ronaldo returned to training after his extended break this afternoon but, with Rooney only required for a morning session, the pair did not actually appear on United's Carrington training ground at the same time.
Instead, any meeting took place within the confines of the dressing rooms, with Rooney apparently forgiving his young team-mate for the part he played in his dismissal during the quarter-final defeat to Portugal in Gelsenkirchen.
Many people, including Alan Shearer and Frank Lampard, believe Ronaldo was way out of order by seemingly leading the clamour for Rooney's red card in Gelsenkirchen.
However, it appears Rooney has already forgiven his young team-mate and no doubt had time for at least a short chat with him after Ronaldo avoided the media scrum awaiting his arrival by driving into the training ground via a back entrance.
Although Ronaldo twice claimed during the World Cup that he wanted to move to Real Madrid, United were quick to quash any suggestion the 21-year-old will be allowed to leave, having only just signed a contract which is due to keep him at Old Trafford until 2010.
And, by at least turning up for training, the 21-year-old has signalled some sort of intention to honour the agreement.
Meanwhile, Park Ji-Sung feels he must start hitting the goal trail if his second season at United is not to be his last.
The South Korea international was only partially successful in his debut campaign with the Old Trafford outfit.
Although he was second only to Wayne Rooney in the assists column, Park scored only twice in 45 appearances, a ratio Ferguson feels he is capable of bettering.
And, while Park accepts becoming the first Korean to play for United is 'an honour', he is also acutely aware that with competition for places about to increase with Carrick's arrival, he must improve to preserve his status as a Red Devil.
'This season is more important for me than the last one,' he said.
'The kind of play I produce will decide whether I remain at United or follow in the footsteps of other players who have left the team.
'I need to improve my number of assists a little bit but I have to score a lot more goals and if I get the chance this season, I will go straight for goal.'
Ferguson told MUTV: 'Michael has completed his medical today, we are going to be having a press conference on Wednesday I think.
'He has settled down fine, I spoke to him today. I said to him 'I'm giving you the number 16 jersey' so he was delighted at that.
'I think that showed great courage because sometimes players are a bit superstitious about things like that but he was keen, and said he would gladly take number 16.'
Asked how relieved he was to wrap up United's first signing of the summer, Ferguson added: 'I wasn't too worried to be honest with you, as I said before you have got to trust the players we have got.
'They had a fantastic season last year in the second half of the season. There's a great spirit here and if we add a couple, it's a bonus for us.'

| Carrick completes £18.6m Man United move
Michael Carrick signed for Manchester United on Monday evening after the final details of his £18.6million move from Tottenham were finalised.
United officials confirmed the deal had been done, with Carrick coming through a medical and agreeing personal terms.
The 25-year-old has become Sir Alex Ferguson's first summer signing and, while the initial fee is believed to be around £13million, Carrick could end up becoming the fifth most expensive player in Red Devils history.
Carrick has been assigned the number 16 shirt - which has been vacant since the abrupt departure of Roy Keane in November - and will be formally unveiled at a press conference on Wednesday.
Ferguson told MUTV: 'Michael has settled down fine, I spoke to him today. I said to him 'I'm giving you the number 16 jersey' so he was delighted at that.

Although Ferguson has yet to state when he expects Carrick to make his debut, it is likely to be in this weekend's four-team tournament in Amsterdam.
After spending most of the summer searching for midfield reinforcements, Sir Alex Ferguson will be delighted to have finally captured his number one target.
The United boss will hope Carrick's passing ability can offer an extra dimension to his midfield, which saw an unlikely combination of John O'Shea and Ryan Giggs deployed at its heart during the latter stages of last season following Keane's departure.

Goal-scoring return for Rooney in friendly win
Sir Alex Ferguson declared himself delighted by Wayne Rooney's goalscoring return to action at Macclesfield tonight.
Exactly 30 days since Rooney's World Cup dream ended in red-card misery in the quarter-final defeat to Portugal, the 20-year-old had the honour of wearing the Red Devils' captain's armband for the first time and marked the occasion with an inspired goal to put the visitors on the road to a 2-1 win at Moss Rose.
With Ruud van Nistelrooy now at Real Madrid, Ferguson needs Rooney to score on a regular basis and the back-flick which found the bottom corner of the net suggested he is up to the task.
'Wayne produced some terrific moments,' said Ferguson. 'He has scored a goal as well, so I'm very happy for him.'
Just hours after being reunited with Cristiano Ronaldo - the man many England supporters feel largely contributed to Rooney's dismissal in Gelsenkirchen - the former Everton player delighted a capacity crowd with his whole-hearted efforts.
Rooney's mere presence probably boosted gate receipts by £25,000, vital income for the cash-strapped League Two outfit.
And with Rio Ferdinand and Edwin van der Sar also making their first appearances of the pre-season campaign, United's big guns are starting to return.
'All three of those lads did well,' said Ferguson.
'It is their first match since the World Cup and they will improve.'
Danny Swailes levelled for the hosts not long after Rooney's strike, but United were not to be denied and Frazier Campbell netted the winner 17 minutes from time.
The victory was marred by a serious-looking injury to young midfielder David Jones who was taken to the local hospital for an X-ray on what appeared to be a broken arm.

The Carrick Issue

Ferguson has paid 11 million pound too much for Carrick, but yet he let RVN go for 5 million pound less than he should have. Waste of money absolute waste, if he got his head up he could have got any midfielder in the world with that sort of money instead he wastes it on an above average player, If Carrick performs then I will forgive, the problem is that in the last 4 seasons Carrick has done nothing to suggest or show he is world class.
As usual, MU has paid too much. Ferdinand, Veron, possibly Rooney (remains to be seen). And as usual, MU has sold too cheaply. Stam, Beckham, Veron, among others. Other clubs know we are desperate to stop Chelsea and can hold us to ransom. Surely it would be better to have ready replacements before letting key players go, instead we once again have a desperation big money transfer. In stark contrast to Arsenal, I hate to admit. The MU soap opera is set to continue for another season, is that why we love it so much?

We can still be the strong gunners w'o Ashley Cole. You guys can have him if ya'll wanna. Lampard sure needs some help.
|
|
Some of us believe he is grossly over-rated and don't want him at Chelsea. He's not worth the money. Until he proves he can't cutt it i'd rather have Bridge at LB.
