Crisis at CorinthiansRe:Ordem E Progresso y Seleção

It has been eight games without a win for Corinthians and despite being crowned champions in 2005 they now find themselves languishing at the bottom of the table with no end in sight for their current crisis.

Rumours abound over the future of coach Geninho with most predicting his imminent departure - not surprising considering the string of coaches the club has gone through since being taken over by the mysterious MSI in 2004; Adema Brega, Júnior, Antonio Lopes. . . Geninho himself has suffered the wrath from above and resigned once before back in 2003 after the club suffered a humiliating 6-1 thrashing at the hands of Juventude; for the time being however it appears he will be staying put.

When challenged on the matter he reported having approached club directors following Timao’s latest defeat on Sunday, “to discuss all possibilities” but had been informed that a change in command was not an option that was being considered at present. He also stated that the players remain behind him and have asked him to stay.

In reference to Sunday’s game, which saw Corinthians beaten one-nil by Santa Cruz in Recife, Geninho lamented that once again it was the team’s reaction to conceding a goal that was to blame. ‘The team entered the game calmly – they didn’t play exceptionally but they had chances and could have won the game. But when we conceded a goal from a set piece the team was shaken, just like the other games.” The players’ reaction to yet another loss were varied; while Édson focused on the determination of the team admitting that, “the situation is a horrible one for all the players,” but that, “the team demonstrated a great determination,” Ricardinho launched a ferocious attack on the state of the pitch arguing that it made it almost impossible to create chances.

Club President Alberto Dualib reacted to the game by appealing to fans for their continued support. “Let’s ask the fans once more to collaborate with the team so we can get out of this situation. We have done it before and we will do it again,” he said in reference to their attempt to escape relegation. His plea is understandable considering the often less than understanding nature of fans; following the Timão’s Copa Libertadores exit earlier this year supporters fought with police and attempted to invade the pitch. In the past they have broken into changing rooms to assault players and even set up a road block and attacked the team bus following one particularly harrowing defeat. Dualib insisted that taunting players will only antagonise them and prove counter productive; “what we need now is to work together and to fight with humility,” he argues.

Corinthians’ next game is against Atlético – PR and we can expect to see some drastic changes. In an interview with Sports TV Geninho admitted that he is hoping to see the return of Carlos Alberto, who is suffering from an ongoing shoulder injury, and that tactical changes are inevitable. The most likely change is a shift to a 3-5-2 formation, or so suggests Globo’s Giovane Martineli, in order to grant more freedom to the wingers. Another likely alteration is the exit of goalkeeper Silvio Luiz and his replacement by the Chilean Johnny Herrera.

Meanwhile the now public battle between the club’s directors and MSI representatives has deepened. The first clear signs of contention came after Corinthians slumped to a one-nil defeat to arch rivals Palameiras on July 16th. A number of directors openly expressed their frustration at MSI President Kia Joorabchian’s decision to allow Argentinean striker Carlos (Carlitos) Tevez to miss the game. Joorabchian hit back in a radio interview complaining “These last two years have been very tiring. Why do they always criticise the investor...Why do they complain about everything we do?” In more recent developments President Alberto Dualib has assumed full control of the club. In a rare move he attended training sessions at the Parque São Jorge and spoke with Roger, Marcelinho and Geninho. He also travelled to Recife with the team for their game against Santa Cruz.

As if things were not bad enough for the club rumours refuse to disappear over the future of the two Argentinean internationals Carlitos Tevez and Javier Masherano. Carlitos has had a turbulent relationship with the club ever since his delayed return from the World Cup angered fans and staff alike. Following his equaliser during the team’s lacklustre performance against Fortelza the Argentine lifted a finger to his mouth and gestured for fans to be quiet; his car was later attacked when leaving the stadium. Threats of an orchestrated campaign against him by the powerful supporters’ group Gavioes de Fiel (Hawks of the Faithful) were enough to elicit an apology but Tevez admitted the incident may have put his future at the club in jeopardy. “It is difficult for me to stay at Corinthians,” he argued and cited concerns over the safety of his wife and daughter as additional worries.

Regardless of recent events Tevez has long made it clear that he does not see the Parque São Jorge and Corinthians as his long term home. Following the away leg of their Copa Libertadores match against River Plate in March he revealed his desire to move to Europe in an interview broadcast on Argentinean radio; he went on to admit that he has always dreamed of playing in Spain. The striker has been linked with a number of clubs including Manchester United, Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspurs with most predicting a transfer fee of around £20million.

Speculation persists over Mescharno, and with Alex Ferguson apparently keen to see the player move to Old Trafford many are predicting his imminent departure to Manchester United. The 22 year old has however repeatedly pledged his dedication to the club and assured fans he is going nowhere. While admitting that he cannot rule out a move to Europe in the future he insists, “I am not thinking about a transfer now and I wouldn’t accept a transfer at the moment – Corinthians are in a difficult position and we need all the help we can to get the team out of this.” While the club recently celebrated securing Nilmar on a permanent basis from his former club Lyon, he has picked up an injury to his right knee and is not expected to return to full fitness for a further six months; another serious setback.

There is some good news at least for the São Paulo club as Saturday will see their return to their favoured stadium - the Pacaembu; no games have been held there since fans ripped up seats and tried to invade the pitch during Corinthians’ clash with River Plate. In comments reported on their official website Mascherano stated, “What happened, happened three months ago – it is already forgotten. We have a chance to return to the Pacaembu – we need to think about winning and the Pacaembu is the best place to play.”

Corinthians will face 11th place Atlético – PR at the Pacembu on Saturday at 18:10 (local time). They are hoping the change of venue will coincide with a change in from and a change in fortune.

Victory at last for Corinthians

Saturday saw Corinthians finally put an end to their eight match spell without victory; goals form Tevez and Rafael Moura helped them to a convincing win against Athletico-PR.

Following the game Geninho declared, “Today the team played how I like, in a 3-4-1-2 formation. I like to play like this and my teams are used to winning like this.” Marcelinho Caioca commented that the victory was a team victory “everyone hugged each other after the goal, including those on the bench,” and that it represents an important step in healing divides within the side. Both will now be hoping that this marks an end to current woes and a new chapter for the club.

Carlos Alberto spoke of the team’s happiness and relief following the victory but was quick to warn that now is not the time for relaxing, “We are still in last place!”

The club’s pleas for fans to get behind the team seem to have been heeded by most; despite a small protest outside the ground over 33,000 spectators squeezed into the Pacaembu. Geninho commented, “It is clear that the fans’ support was fundamental. The crowd played together with team and helped the team achieve this positive result.” Carlos Alberto made similar comments adding, “We hope the fans’ support continues.”

Shortly after his first training session with the club Corinthians’ latest reinforcement, striker Nadson, confirmed his faith in the side insisting that he believes they are still capable of qualifying for next years Copa Libertadores. With the seasons’ half-way point fast approaching and qualification for the competition requiring finishing in the top four this will be no easy feat but Nadson is confident that things will get better and that the team will continue to win. Nadson, who has been out of action for nearly a year following an ankle injury, joins the club on loan from the Korean Suwon Samsung Bluewings. In his first press conference at his new club he acknowledged, “It’s a long time to be out but now I just want to get out on the pitch and give everything I have – I know everything is going to go right.”

It would be early days to declare the crisis at Corinthians over but Saturday’s win is an important step and things are looking up for the team from the Parque São Jorge.

Corinthians next game is against Figueirense at the Pacaembu on Saturday.

Dunga's first game

New Brazil Coach Dunga takes charge of his first game today, in a friendly against Norway in Oslo.

The former captain has called up many young players and voluntarily dropped almost the entire world cup team, the exceptions Cicinho, Fred, Gilberto Silva, Juan, Lúcio, Luisão and Robinho.

The 1994 World Champion is giving the chance to his young talents to prove they are good enough, something that Carlos Alberto Parriera was often criticsed for not doing.

Players such as Jonâtas, recent winner of the Copa Brasil and who has just signed for Español, Marcelo (Fluminense) and Wagner (Cruzeiro) will all be keen to prove their worth.

Norway host the Brazil game hoping to extend their unbeaten record against the five-times world champions having beaten them twice - including the 1998 World Cup - and drawn once. Norway shocked Brazil with a 2-1 World Cup victory in France in the opening round in 1998 and also beat them 4-2 in 1997 and drew 1-1 in 1988, both in friendlies.

"The aim is to give the new players a chance and to form a group but the Brazilian national team always love playing and want to have fun and win," said the new coach.

Teams (probable):

Brazil: Gomes ; Cicinho, Juan, Lucio, Gilberto ; Gilberto Silva, Edmilson, Elano, Daniel Carvalho ; Fred, Robinho.
Coach: Dunga

Norway: Myhre ; Riise, Hagen, Hangeland, Johnsen ; Grindheim, Haestad, Pedersen, Stromstad ; Carew, Solskjaer.
Coach: Age Hareide

Kick Off: 18:10 (GMT)

Without the main players from the squad that failed miserably in Germany during the World Cup, the Brazilian Federation hopes this can mean a strong start to the rebuilding of the team for the 2010 World Cup. Dunga will not only have to overcome the difficult task of coaching his first game ever at the National level, but also must do so against a team Brazil has never been able to beat. More than a change in tactics, for now the coach only promises a change in attitude, demanding more of an effort from his players than what the team showed during the World Cup. I'm not sure Brazil will be able to click yet, but players willing to make a run for the team may feel encouraged to show their best football.

Judging from yesterdays match they did fairly allright.

Brazilian Serie A - Round 17 preview
« Reply #164 on: August 17, 2006, 06:10:29 AM »
Reply with quote

With Sao Paulo and Inter deciding the Libertadores tonight, the Brazilian Serie A will see eight games played this midweek. The two remaining games (Inter x Parana and Atletico Paranaense x Sao Paulo) will be played only on September 30.

Here are the today's six games and tomorrow's two matches:

PONTE PRETA x FORTALEZA: Ponte had an important away draw at Flamengo during the weekend, and has played two strong games in a row. Against Fortaleza, the team is the favourite and should come away with the three points. The visitors, on the other hand, disappointed in a 2-1 home loss to Internacional's reserves, and should improve significantly if they wish to stand any chance of gaining at least a point.

VASCO x SAO CAETANO: Can Vasco build on the away draw against Juventude on Saturday. It certainly can, and Sao Caetano may be a great opportunity for the locals to do so. With a last-minute change in command, Sao Caetano lost coach Emerson Leao to Corinthians, and must now overcome this sudden development away from home. If Leao was still in command, Sao Caetano could naturally gain at least a point here. Without him, Vasco regains the favouritism for the match.

SANTA CRUZ x GREMIO: Santa Cruz lost for the first time after the World Cup on the weekend, away at Sao Caetano. Coming back home may give the team an extra boost to remain clear of the relegation zone. Gremio is coming off two wins, but faced a long trip to Recife for this game, and may come short in its quest for another three points. Santa is the slight favourite, but a draw is not ruled out.

GOIAS x BOTAFOGO: Goias faces Botafogo trying to recover some ground in the standings before it's too late. After firing coach Antonio Lopes and re-hiring Geninho - who was fired by Corinthians -, the team tries to overcome the past poor performances that saw the team gain only 2 of its last 18 possible points. Botafogo sees itself back in the relegation zone after a 3-1 home loss to Palmeiras, and could have a tough time gaining a point here.

FIGUEIRENSE x FLAMENGO: Figueirense went to Sao Paulo and defeated Corinthians on Saturday, while Flamengo could only play to a scoreless draw to Ponte Preta at home. Playing in Santa Catarina, Figueirense is the slight favourite here, but must overcome a determined Flamengo team that is still dangerously close to the relegation zone. A draw is a real possibility, despite a slight favouritism for the locals.

FLUMINENSE x CORINTHIANS: New coach Emerson Leao tries to bring some life back to the defending champions. Currently in last place in the standings, Corinthians must restart winning soon if it's to escape a trip to the Second Division in 2007. Fluminense may not be the perfect candidate to do so, given the team's strong 3-2 away win over Cruzeiro during the weekend. Nevertheless, a change in command could give Corinthians the boost it needs to get at least a point here. Last month, Leao was ahead of Sao Caetano in a 2-2 away draw against Fluminense.

SANTOS x CRUZEIRO: Dropping to third place in the standings after an away draw against Parana was not what Santos fans hoped for last weekend, but in the end the result should have been considered positive. The same cannot be said about Cruzeiro, that lost 3-2 at home against Fluminense to further distance itself from the top of the table. With new coach Oswaldo Oliveira in command, the team will still face a tough challenge against Santos, which can jump to second place with a win here.

PALMEIRAS x JUVENTUDE: Palmeiras will try to continue its climb in the standings in a home game against Juventude. Coming off five wins and one draw in the six matches since the World Cup break, Palmeiras is undoubtedly the hottest team in the league right now. By keeping its concentration for this game, the team shall gain its sixth win in seven matches against Juventude, which has not played very well away from home this year.

The battle of Porto Alegre

Tonight, a Brazilian team will be crowned the champion of South America. Right now it looks like this team will be Internacional, who had a very important 2-1 away win over Sao Paulo in the first leg of the final, last week. To make matters worse for the visitors, key midfielder Josue will not play after being sent off in the first match, and forward Ricardo Oliveira may also be dropped from the squad after not receiving proper authorization from his team, Betis, to extend his loan by one week so as to appear in the final match.

Sao Paulo must win by at least two goals in order to win the title in regulation. A Sao Paulo win by a single goal takes the game to extra time, with a possible penalty shootout deciding the title should no team score in the extra 30 minutes. Inter only needs a draw at home to win its most important title ever. No matter who wins the match, the final will certainly be an epic battle between two three-time Brazilian champions.

If Inter can play as seriously as it has last week, without falling into the over optimist mode of its own fans, then it should win the title. After all, the team has only lost once at the Beira-Rio Stadium this year. Sao Paulo must play its best game of the year to stand any chance of winning. But that, in football, is also a very possible outcome.

All in all it was a satisfying, promising effort especially when considering we were missing huge part of our main players. We could have easily scored 3 hadn't it been for the excellent performance of the norwegian goalkeeper. Looking forward to the friendly against Argentina now.

Brazil grab draw in Oslo

A Daniel Carvalho goal in the 62nd minute got Brazil a 1-1 draw against Norway in Oslo.

The draw was the fourth straight match between the two countries that Brazil have failed to win.

Dunga's new look Brazil started the game brightly, passing quickly and controlling the tempo of the game, in a first half littered with chances at both ends.

But it was Norway who made the break through with Gamst Pedersen scoring in the 51st minute when he curled a superb free kick from about 25 yards out, past the wall and beyond Gomes's reach.
