Gilberto Aparecido da Silva (born October 7, 1976 in Lagoa da Prata, Minas Gerais, Brazil) is a Brazilian national football player who plays for Arsenal as a midfielder.
Early life As a child, Gilberto lived with his father (a metalworker), his mother (a housewife) and his sister. In 1988 (aged 12), he joined América-MG. During these years, his father taught him furniture making skills. In 1993, his father retired, leaving Gilberto to provide for his family. He quit football to work as a labourer and a worker in a sweet factory. He earned £50 a month by today's rates.
Football career In 1996, his friends convinced him to give football another try. He rejoined América-MG, and played in central defence. In his first season, he helped them win Série B. He was a key player, but some fans criticised him for being inconsistent.
In 2000, Gilberto joined Atlético Mineiro. In his first season, he fractured his right tibia and didn't play many games. In his second season, he was played in a defensive midfield role by coach Carlos Alberto Parreira. It was in this position that Gilberto became a star player for Atlético Mineiro.
International career In 2002, Gilberto was a surprise inclusion in the Brazil team for the 2002 FIFA World Cup. He was expected to play a bit-part in the tournament. However, midfielder Emerson sustained injury just before the first game. Brazil coach Luiz Felipe Scolari called upon Gilberto to fill the gap, and he ended up playing in every match. Brazil played Germany in the final, and won 2-0. In the words of Veja magazine, Gilberto "carried the piano for Ronaldo and Rivaldo to play their tunes on".
Gilberto's performance in the 2002 FIFA World Cup caught the attention of many coaches. Arsenal and Aston Villa led the chase to sign him. After a summer of speculation, Gilberto joined Arsenal on August 7, 2002 for £4.5 million.
Gilberto was selected for the Brazil national football team for the 2006 FIFA World Cup. Gilberto was substituted on in two games, and started two games due to an Emerson injury. Brazil were beaten 1-0 by France in the quarter final, but most pundits said that Gilberto had a solid tournament.
Club career Gilberto made his Arsenal debut as a substitute in the second half of the FA Community Shield against Liverpool, scoring the winning goal but also receiving a yellow card for a misdemeanour during the match.
In 2002-03, Gilberto became a regular in the Arsenal side, and won an FA Cup winner's medal. On September 25, 2002, he managed to set a record for the fastest goal in the UEFA Champions League, scoring after 19.4 seconds against PSV Eindhoven.
2003-04 was an even better season for Gilberto, as Arsenal won the FA Premier League title undefeated; he played in 32 of Arsenal's 38-match unbeaten run. However, he injured his back at start of the 2004-05 season and was out for several months. He made a return late in the season and helped Arsenal reach runners-up place in the Premiership and win the FA Cup against Manchester United, 5-4 on penalties.
In the 2005-06 season, Gilberto helped Arsenal finish runners up in the UEFA Champions League.
Silva is often called "the invisible wall" (or "volante") in Brazil. This is because his play often goes unnoticed, as he positions himself very deep in the midfield, breaking up opposition attacks before they gather momentum. In this role, he is the first line of defence for both club and country. As Arsenal and Brazil are both notoriously attack minded, he offers cover for attacking wing-backs and other midfielders, such as Robert Pirès, who have a poor record of dropping back to help the defence.
Charity Gilberto is a patron of Street League, a UK based charity which organises football matches for homeless people, refugees and asylum-seekers. In June 2003, Gilberto travelled to Brazil with 17 Street League players for a tour. The tour included a visit to his home town (Lagoa da Prata) and games against local shanty town teams at the Maracanã stadium.
Trivia Gilberto currently lives in St Albans with his wife and daughter. Gilberto plays the mandolin, though he recently stopped taking lessons. Gilberto's favourite food is black bean and pork stew. Gilberto's footballing idols are Zico, Baresi and Cerezo.[4] Gilberto's footballing influence is Dunga. Gilberto's favourite book is Who Moved My Cheese by Spencer Johnson.
Quotes about Gilberto "If you never give up then you always have a chance, and they got a great example from a World Cup winner. You only have to see where Gilberto was when we got the ball back and where he was when he scored his goal. Remember this is a guy who has won everything." —Arsène Wenger
Quotes by Gilberto Silva
"We were a poor family and had to work hard. That's why, as a boy, I had to take those jobs as a labourer and in the factory. But I'm glad I had that tough start. It makes me identify with people who are not so lucky." "When you see that you can find and enjoy new cheese you change course, the more important your cheese is to you the more you want to hold on to it." "Brazil is the second team of all the people in the world. The different countries, they love the way we play."

Mineiro scored a famous goal against Liverpool in the final of the 2005 FIFA Club World Championship in Yokohama, Japan, which eventually decided the title in favour São Paulo.

Juninho, real name Antônio Augusto Ribeiro Reis Junior, also known as Juninho Pernambucano (born January 30, 1975 in Recife) is a Brazillian footballer who plays central midfielder for Olympique Lyonnais and the Brazilian national team.
Clubs His career started with Sport Clube do Recife. Juninho played 110 games with Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama, scoring 24 goals. He won the Copa Libertadores with Vasco and, in 2000, won the Brazilian silver Ball trophy.
He is especially famous for his accurate, powerful and varied set pieces, having scored 26 free kicks for Olympique Lyonnais. He is amongst the world’s best in this area, recently demonstrated in March 2006, when he scored a freekick from a staggering 38 metres against AC Ajaccio. In addition, he is a technically and mentally gifted player, although he lacks the pace of other midfielders. His leadership abilities has prompted Gerard Houllier to give him the captain's armband, as well.
Juninho has proved an influential force at the club. Before his arrival at Olympique Lyonnais, the club had never won the championship, but since his arrival, they have won it five seasons in a row.
Juninho's exploits at Lyon earned him the admiration of clubs around Europe, most notably Manchester United in the English Premier League. Other rumours suggest that he could be the first of many big name signings for Aston Villa come the possible takeover by an Irish Consortium.
National team He has 37 caps with the Brazilian national team. He received his first cap on March 28, 1999. He was selected by Carlos Alberto Parreira for the Brazilian World Cup 2006 squad as a bench player on the deeply gifted squad. He scored a brilliant goal in Brazil's 4-1 win against Japan in their final group match with a typical long-range strike that somehow squirted through the keeper's hands after coming off the bench to replace usual starter Zé Roberto .
He has retired from the national team, stating that "The national team is over for me and those of us over 30 have to leave a place for the younger players to make a new team for 2010," referring to players like Cafu (36) and Dida (32).
"We have to think about the young guys and build up another team."

Ricardinho played for Paraná Clube before moving to France to play for Bordeaux in 1997. A year later, he moved back to Brazil and played for Corinthians from 1998 to 2002, and São Paulo from 2002 until January 2004. After a short spell at English club Middlesbrough between February and April 2004, Ricardinho joined Santos where he played for the next two years. He has earned 18 caps for the Brazilian national team, the first in March 2000, and played four games during the World Cup 2002.
In 2005 he was elected by Brazilian football magazine Placar as the most hated footballer in Brazil, following a research done with first division fellow professionals. Several incidents in his club career have fuelled into a reputation of being a "snitch" and informer to the coaching staff of his teammates' actions.
He was selected by Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira among the 23 footballers to participate in the 2006 FIFA World Cup. He played two matches as a substitute, against Japan and Ghana. In the latter, he made an assist to a late goal scored by midfielder Zé Roberto.
