Police foil kidnapping of Santo player’s mother

The mother of Santos defender Kleber was rescued unharmed just two hours after being kidnapped in São Paulo on Wednesday. Police foiled the kidnapping after officers became suspicious of two men in a car; a short chase ensued and Noemia de Carvalho Correa was found tied up in the back seat.
Reports from the Secretary for Public Security in the state reveal that no arrests have been made but military police are looking for five suspects. Two mobile phones were recovered from the vehicle and it is hoped that they will lead to the kidnappers.
This is the latest in string of kidnaps directed at the families of footballers. Robinho’s mother was abducted from a family gathering in November 2004 and found unharmed several weeks later walking the streets of São Paulo; the Santos player paid a reported $80,000 to secure her release. Since then the mother’s of six other footballers have been kidnapped.

The president of Bordeaux, Jean-Louis Triaud, announced the continuation of negotiations with Daniel Carvalho and his club, CSKA Moscow.
Bordeaux's coach Ricardo Gomes has already coached the player at the time of the qualification tournament for the Olympic games 2004 in Athens.
The offensive midfielder has been called up by the new Seleção selector, Dunga, for the friendly game against Norway at Oslo on August 16th.
Daniel Carvalho is the number one priority of the Bordeaux managers as said Ricardo:
« We hope to finalize the transfer before August 8th. If nothing happens before this date, we'll make another choice ».
This choice which might be the prolongation of Denilson's contract, who was nevertheless announced as starter.
« Denilson hopes to stay but not at any price. He received many exotic offers, economically attractive but not motivating from a sporting point of view », confirmed President Triaud.

Santos scores two late goals to beat Internacional 2-1 in Brazilian league

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Substitute midfielder Wendel scored two goals in the last 6 minutes and Santos rallied to defeat Internacional 2-1 in the Brazilian league on Sunday.
Leader Sao Paulo was held to a 1-1 draw against Botafogo in Rio de Janeiro, while defending champion Corinthians - still last in the standings - beat Atletico Paranaense 2-1 and ended an eight-match winless streak on Saturday with the help of Argentine Carlos Tevez. Santos got the win at Vila Belmiro stadium despite playing two men down in the final 15 minutes. Striker Reinaldo was sent off in the 75th and Chilean midfielder Claudio Maldonado left the match because of an injury in the 86th after Santos had already made three substitutions.
Internacional - which rested its regular starters ahead of the Copa Libertadores final against Sao Paulo on Wednesday - got ahead with a shot by striker Iarley in the 11th minute.
It stayed ahead until the 84th, when Wendel netted his first goal with a well-struck free kick. The striker, who entered the match in the 59th, scored the go-ahead goal with a penalty kick a minute into injury time.
It was Santos' third win in a row - and fourth in five matches. The result moved the two-time Brazilian champion to third in the 20-team standings with 27 points, three behind Sao Paulo. Internacional, winless in the Brazilian league in four matches, dropped to fifth place with 26 points.
Sao Paulo, which also rested its regular starters, maintained its lead despite the 1-1 draw against Botafogo. Striker Felipe Adao netted for Botafogo in the 9th minute and forward Thiago equalized in the 50th. Botafogo entered relegation zone with the result.
On Saturday, Tevez scored a goal in Corinthians' 2-1 win against 2001 champion Atletico Paranaense at Pacaembu stadium in Sao Paulo. It was Corinthians' first victory since May 21, before the tournament was halted for the World Cup. It had lost eight of its last nine matches.
Atletico got ahead in the 3rd minute with a goal by midfielder Ferreira after a blunder by Argentine defender Sebastian Dominguez. Tevez equalized with a close-range header in the eighth minute and striker Rafael Moura closed the scoring in the 10th.
A protest by about 4,000 fans outside Pacaembu before the match ended in a small confrontation with police, but no one was injured, authorities said.
Corinthians remains last in the standings with 13 points from 15 matches.
Also Saturday, five-time Brazilian champion Flamengo defeated Goias 1-0 in the return of former Real Madrid striker Savio. Forward Obina netted the winner at Maracana stadium, snapping Flamengo's four-match losing streak and moving the team out of relegation zone. Goias hasn't won in six matches.
Two-time Brazilian champion Gremio beat Juventude 1-0 at Olimpico stadium, which has been banned for eight matches because of fan violence in a Gremio match last week. The suspension takes effect in the next round.
Cruzeiro moved to fourth in the standings on Sunday despite a 3-3 draw against Santa Cruz at Mineirao stadium in Belo Horizonte. The 2003 league champion, winless in four matches, twice relinquished a two-goal advantage.
In other results, second-place Parana beat Vasco 2-1 in Curitiba to earn its seventh win in eight matches, while sixth-place Fluminense fell 3-0 to Ponte Preta in Campinas.
Ponte Preta got the win despite playing without several regular starters who fell ill with stomachaches just hours before the match. Serbian midfielder Dejan Petkovic missed a first-half penalty kick for Fluminense.
Four-time Brazilian champion Palmeiras held Fortaleza to a scoreless draw in Fortaleza despite having two players ejected. The result snapped Palmeiras' four-match winning streak.
