Sao Paulo cruise to Copa Libertadores final

São Paulo FC have cruised to their second Copa Libertadores final in row after beating Mexican side Chivas 3-0 (4-0 on aggregate).

Having won the first leg 1-0 in Mexico and needing only a draw at Morumbi to go through. São Paulo FC start slowly conceeding a penalty in the 28th minute that Rogerio Ceni superbly saved.

It was Leandro who made the break through in the 32nd minute with a right-footed shot from inside the penalty area. He fired into an open net after playing a one two with Ricardo Oliveira.

Mineiro scored the second in the 39th minute, firing a power drive shot from 10 yards out.

São Paulo FC finished the scoring in the 47th after a right cross by Souza, Ricardo Oliveira headed home.

Chivas finished the game a man down after defender Hector Reynoso was sent off for a vicious foul.

São Paulo will discover who they will meet in the final tonight, either Internacional or Paraguay's Libertad (0-0 first leg).

Sao Paulo reaches Copa Libertadores final, favored for second straight title

SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) - Sao Paulo's convincing victory over Chivas of Guadalajara sent the team to the Copa Libertadores final and made it the favorite for a second straight title.

The defending champions routed Chivas 3-0 at Morumbi stadium on Wednesday to advance 4-0 on aggregate. The team is two matches away from its fourth title in the Latin American competition.
Sao Paulo will face either Brazil's Internacional or Paraguay's Libertad, which play Thursday in Brazil. The teams drew the first leg 0-0 in Paraguay.

No matter who the opponent is, Sao Paulo will enter the decisive series with an edge. It will be playing in its sixth Copa Libertadores final, while Internacional has been in only one and Libertad none. Sao Paulo already has three titles, while Inter has none.

"We will only win it if we show we are superior than our adversaries," said goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni, who saved a first-half penalty kick Wednesday when the match was scoreless. "Our experience won't help if we don't play what we know."

Sao Paulo lost in the final to Argentina's Velez Sarsfield in 1994 and to Argentina's Independiente in 1974. It is trying to win consecutive titles for the first time since it won the competition in 1992 and 1993.

"It would be more interesting to face Libertad because we can play the second leg at home," Ceni said. "Inter is a team very similar to ours, very good technically, and would decide the title at home."

Sao Paulo has been dominant in the past two years. In addition to the Copa Libertadores title in 2005, it also went on to win its third world title in FIFA's club world championship against Liverpool in Japan. It currently leads the Brazilian league even though it rested several regular starters in recent matches because of the Latin American competition.

Chivas' players were quick to admit Sao Paulo outplayed them in the semifinals, including in the first leg in Mexico when the Brazilians won 1-0.

Coach Manuel Jose de la Torre warned the defending champions, however.

"Sao Paulo is very good in this type of competition," Torre said. "It is a serious candidate for the Libertadores title, but nobody wins it ahead of time."

Sao Paulo still isn't sure whether it will be able to count on striker Ricardo Oliveira for the second leg of the finals. He is playing on a loan from Real Betis and his contract ends on Aug. 10, a day after the first leg.

Club directors were trying to make a deal with Betis so the player can remain for the last match. Ricardo Oliveira was crucial on Wednesday, scoring a goal and setting up the other two in front of nearly 70,000 fans at Morumbi.

Striker Leandro opened the scoring in the 32nd minute with a right-footed shot from inside the penalty area, and Mineiro added to the lead with a one-timer from the top of the area in the 39th. Ricardo Oliveira netted his goal with a header in the 47th.

Chivas played a man down from the 73rd after defender Hector Reynoso was sent off for a hard foul.

The Mexicans missed a penalty kick when midfielder Ramon Morales had his shot from the spot saved by Ceni.

Ceni will have a chance in the finals to become the goalkeeper with most career goals. He has 62 goals, according to FIFA, tied with Paraguay's Jose Luis Chilavert.
