So Flamengo are Brazil cup champs
Could this be a stepping board to better things? Will the extra money from Copa do Libertadores be spent on new players or is the club so far in the hole its too little too late to get itself back to the top???

Parreira says he's close to an agreement to coach South Africa

Parreira says he's close to an agreement to coach South Africa
RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil (AP) - Former Brazil coach Carlos Alberto Parreira said Friday he is close to reaching an agreement to manage 2010 World Cup host South Africa, a deal that would mark his return to the continent after nearly 40 years.
Parreira, who resigned from Brazil last week, met with officials from the South African Football Association in Rio de Janeiro on Friday. "We gave a good step to finish a contract," Parreira told The Associated Press after the meeting. "You cannot finalize anything in one day. We agreed about financial stuff and staff, but it's a huge process to build a team."
Parreira's first position ahead of national teams was in Africa, where he coached Ghana in 1967 and 1968. Ghana was runner-up in the African Cup of Nations under his command in 1968.
South Africa, the 1998 African Cup champion, qualified for the 1998 and 2002 World Cups but finished third in its qualifying group for 2006, five points behind qualifier Ghana.
It has been looking for a full-time replacement since firing Romanian Ted Dimutru on Feb. 1, a day after the Bafana Bafana lost its third straight game and was eliminated in the first round of the African Cup finals in Egypt.
SuperSport United manager Pitso Mosimane guided the team during its three games for the Cosafa Cup Group B semifinals in May. The Bafana Bafana drew with Lesotho and beat Swaziland before losing to Botswana on penalties.
Parreira said he planned to travel to South Africa in about two weeks to finalize details on the contract.
When asked how close he was to reaching an agreement, Parreira said, "We are on the way."
The coach declined to give any other details. He had previously said that SAFA officials contacted him for talks even before the World Cup in Germany.
The 63-year-old Parreira resigned from Brazil after the team's dismal World Cup campaign. The five-time champion played poorly and was eliminated after a 1-0 quarterfinal loss to eventual runner-up France.
Parreira led Brazil to its fourth world title in the 1994 World Cup in the United States.
If he coaches another nation in 2010 finals, he would become the only man to manage at six World Cups. Bora Milutinovic has coached five different teams while Parreira led Kuwait in 1982, the United Arab Emirates in 1990, Saudi Arabia in 1998, and Brazil in 1994 and 2006.
The Brazilian soccer confederation replaced Parreira with Dunga, a former World Cup champion with no coaching experience.

Zagallo steps down as technical co-ordinator
Four time world cup winner Mario Zagallo has stepped down as Brazil's technical co-ordinator.
"It's impossible not to associate Zagallo with the Brazilian team," said CBF president Ricardo Teixeira on the CBF's web site.
"There's just been an interruption in his connection, which could continue in another way."
Zagallo won the World Cup as a player in 1958 and 1962, as a coach in 1970 and was assistant to Carlos Alberto Parreira in 1994, when Brazil won their fourth title.
"Zagallo's career is profoundly intertwined with the history of the Brazilian team," said Teixeira. "He has experience and capability to render more services to Brazilian football."

Copa Libertadores: São Paulo Win, Internacional Draw
Wednesday, São Paulo finally beat away Chivas one nil in the first leg of the Copa Libertadores semifinal.
Indeed, the Paulista club already played two times against Chivas at the time of the first round and lost each time.
But Ramalho's men won the most important match, away thanks to their scorer-goalkeeper Rogerio Ceni from penalty at the end of the game.
He scored his 62nd goal and joinded goalkeeper Chilavert (Paraguay) in the scorer-goalkeeper ranking.
Therefore, this victory has been tarnished by the Betis Sevilla managers request who demanded Ricardo Oliveira's return in Spain on August 12th at the end of his loan.
Even if the return leg will take place on August 2nd, the qualification for the final will play without Ricardo Oliveira if he joins Betis.
Thursday, at Asuncion, Internacional drew 0-0 with Libertad. The final decision will take place in the return leg next week at Beira Rio stadium in Porto Allegre.
Internacional as São Paulo kept all their chance to qualify for the final which might concern two Brazilian teams as last season between São Paulo and Atlético Paranaense.

Flamengo win Brazil Cup
A Juan goal in the first half was enough to give Flamengo victory over arch rivals Vasco da Gama on Wednesday. Earning the club their second Brazil Cup title.
The 1-0 victory, 3-0 on aggregate, gives Flamengo a Copa Libertadores place in next year's tournament for the first time since 2002.
The balance of the game moved to Flamengo after Vasco's Valdir Papel was sent off for a bad tackle from behind in the 16th minute. As he left the field, coach Renato Portaluppi was seen to push Papel in anger at his lack of discipline.
With Vasco requiring at least two goals, a man down and pushing men forward. The space opened for Flamengo to strike on the break.
Leonardo Moura's shot deflected off a defender, leaving full back Juan to hit a low shot from the edge of the area past the Vasco goalkeeper in the 28th minute.
Juan's goal added to Obina's and Luizao's in the first leg gave Flamengo a 3-0 (aggregate) win and Flamengo their first major trophy since 1990.
They also broke a run of bad luck which had seen them beaten finalists on three occasions in 1997, 2003 and 2004.
Team Lineups:
Flamengo: Diego, Fernando, Renato Silva, Rodrigo Arroz, Leonardo Moura, Jonatas, Toro (Obina), Renato, Renato Augusto (Horacio Peralta), Juan and Luizao (Leo).
Vasco: Cassio, Wagner Diniz, Fabio Braz, Jorge Luiz, Diego, Andrade (Abedi), Igor, Morais (Ernane), Ramon (Valdiram), Valdir Papel and Edilson.
Referee: Carlos Eugenio Simon (Brazil).
