Players claim victory in shoe dispute with federation

FRANKFURT, Germany (AP) - After beating Sweden 3-0, Germany players claimed another victory.

The players said they will be free to play in personal shoes as of next game - the 2008 European Championship qualifying match against Ireland in Stuttgart.
But the soccer federation said it had promised only that the issue would be settled before the game.

A group of leading players, including striker Miroslav Klose and goalkeeper Jens Lehmann, want to use shoes provided by their personal sponsors, rather than the shoes supplied by Adidas, which has an equipment contract with the national team.

The dispute blew up two days before the match against Sweden, with some players threatening to walk out of Wednesday's game.

With the DFB promising to settle the issue quickly, the threat of a boycott was averted and Germany went on to beat Sweden 3-0 in Joachim Loew's coaching debut.

After the game, the players said they had been promised by the DFB that they would have the free choice of shoes.

"We got the promise that we'll be finally able to play in shoes that we also use in our clubs," Lehmann said.

DFB president Theo Zwanziger said Thursday he had only given his word that the problem will be solved before the Sept. 2 game against Ireland.

French coach angry over Dhorasoo's World Cup film
« Reply #809 on: August 17, 2006, 11:30:47 PM »

PARIS (AP) - Coach Raymond Domenech is angry over midfielder Vikash Dhorasoo's plans to release an unauthorized film that looks behind the scenes during France's World Cup campaign.

Dhorasoo, who made only a brief substitute's appearance during the tournament, spent much of his time filming his teammates with a hand-held camera. He now plans to release a film called "Substitute."
Domenech has urged him not to.

"I have not given my agreement to appear in this film, and I will not give it," Domenech said Tuesday at France's training camp. "This is not a sporting matter, but a question of marketing."

Team captain Patrick Vieira, who leads Les Bleus against Bosnia-Herzegovena later Wednesday in Sarajevo, said Dhorasoo "should be careful."

"I was not aware of this project," said Vieira. "I'm surprised because it was a private film."

Vieira said Dhorasoo's film could intrude on the secrecy of the team dressing room.

"He should be careful because there are some things you can't show," said Vieira. "I think everyone shares that idea."

Dhorasoo said Domenech and Vieira were overreacting.

"It made me laugh a lot, because they are worrying over very little," Dhorasoo told French television on Wednesday. "The film is not about them, it is about me. It is about a player who goes to the World Cup."

France was beaten in the World Cup final by Italy on penalty kicks.

France beats Bosnia 2-1 on late goal
« Reply #810 on: August 17, 2006, 11:32:32 PM »

SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina (AP) - Julien Faubert scored a late goal Wednesday to give France a 2-1 win over Bosnia-Herzegovina in a friendly - France's first match since losing to Italy in the World Cup final

Bosnia dominated early, and Sergej Barbarez gave the hosts the lead. Zlatan Misimovic's free kick from the left was passed on to Barbarez, who beat France goalkeeper Gregory Coupet from five meters (yards).

France increased the pressure toward the end of the first half and took control of the game.

Franck Ribery's free kick went to Louis Saha, who passed to William Gallas for a volley that went behind Bosnia goalkeeper Kenan Hasagic for the equalizer.

Both teams had chances in the second half, but it was France that scored the winner when Faubert volleyed the ball into the net.

"We played a good game and I am satisfied with how we played. We are sorry that we lost the game in this fashion," Bosnia coach Blaz Sliskovic said.

Both teams used the match to prepare for the 2008 European Championship qualifying tournament.

Bosnia faces Malta and Hungary next month in qualifying matches. Turkey, Norway, Moldova and defending European champion Greece are also in Group C.

France, which won the European Championship in 2000, are in Group B with Italy, Ukraine, Scotland, Lithuania, Georgia and the Faeroe Islands. The French team opens against Georgia and then hosts Italy.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Lineups:

Bosnia: Kenan Hasagic; Sasa Papac, Emir Spahic, Vedin Music, Dzemal Berberovic, Hasan Salihamidzic (Admir Vladavic, 45), Vladan Grujic (Ivica Grlic, 64), Zlatan Bajramovic, Zvjezdan Misimovic (Ivan Jolic, 84), Mladen Bartolovic (Mirko Hrgovic, 73), Sergej Barbarez (Zlatan Muslimovic, 59).

France: Gregory Coupet; Jean-Alain Boumsong (Gael Givet, 60), William Gallas, Eric Abidal, Willy Sagnol, Patrick Vieira, Rio Antonio Mavuba, Florent Malouda (Sylvain Wiltord, 52), Franck Ribery (Julien Faubert, 69), Thierry Henry, Louis Saha.

Italy coach backs squad selection
« Reply #811 on: August 17, 2006, 11:33:40 PM »

ROME, Aug 17 (Reuters) - Roberto Donadoni, new coach of world champions Italy, said he had no regrets about fielding a third-string side in Wednesday's 2-0 friendly defeat at home to Croatia.

Donadoni opted not to call-up any of the players who featured in Italy's triumphant World Cup campaign last month in Germany.

Goalkeeper Marco Amelia was the only member of Marcello Lippi's World Cup squad to feature in the defeat at Livorno and the back-up keeper did not appear during the tournament.

'I want to clear up one thing -- I would make the same choices again,' said Donadoni who gave seven players their debut for the Azzurri.

'Don't forget that the players who featured in the World Cup are in a worse physical condition than those who played in Livorno.

'It is not enough to send out players who are 'names' or lads with greater technical ability in order to win games and in any case I want to think positively,' said the former AC Milan player.

Italy's press were less generous with the daily Gazzetta dello Sport describing the match as 'an avoidable embarassment' and suggesting it would have been better to have cancelled the friendly.

'The embarassment remains and the money pocketed from the television contract is not enough to justify it,' said the paper.

Donadoni's first real test comes on Sept. 2 when Italy begin their Euro 2008 qualifying campaign at home to Lithuania in Group B.

Four days later Italy travel to France where they will come up against opponents keen to avenge their defeat in the World Cup final in Berlin.

It will be a very different Italy that will take the field in those two games with players such as captain Fabio Cannavaro and midfielder Andrea Pirlo expected back in the squad.

Donadoni's debut defeat ended Italy's unbeaten run of 25 games but the Italy coach can take some comfort from the fact that the last loss came on August 18, 2004 - Lippi's first game in charge.

charity shield in the bag. good start.

our play was great to watch, love it. how our play has changed with the pace of bellamy, gonzalez & pennant

they have big names who didn't fire

we have hard workers who were on FIRE!

Great way to start! That's the way a TEAM plays. No amount of money can buy that. I am still new to the English football scene, but enjoyed the play tremendously. Seemed to flow more and be more aggressive than World Cup play, where it looked like everyone was just too scared to make a mistake.

I loved seeing Chelsea go down! I have quickly developed a dislike for everything about them, from their owner on down to their players. Has Mourinho trotted out any of his patented excuses yet? Legs still not fresh?

English pips shld learn to accept like Australia, USA & other African countries that they are not one of the best in the world and it is not because of refs, Seaman, Rooney injury or C. Ronaldo...

Shut up Gerrard...I cld just lose the lil respect I had for the long nosed ball wacking scouser!

Gerrard did admit that they went in overconfident. Arent u a LFC supporter? Isnt Stevie G ur boy?

It is absolutely senseless to target Walcott is any way because 1.) he didn't pick himself 2.) he didn't get a chance to play!

Sven should have a good reason for snubbing defoe and bent for walcott and to not play him at all is totally contradictory

But I look at Stevie G's hits on SGE and not on Walcott...spot on.

If they actually took any of Defoe or Darren Bent, they would have had some decent forward line.

Instead David Dein (now resigned from the fa board) & Wenger saying how Walcott would shine. Did he? Wasted space

Looking for any little excuse to get on the best player in the worlds case? It's true enough, he said England were overconfident that doesnt sound like a man with a huge ego to me. Not to mention that Walcott was a useless choice, if he had no intention on using him he should have picked Defoe who could have stepped in for Owen and saved us alot of pain

Agreed. Gerrard was negative towards Walcott's presence only, since his selection made no sense. He just said what many people have already stated - shocked that he was there in the first place, and if he wasn't there to be used except to gain some int'l exposure (like Ronaldo in '94 for example) - then another striker should've been brought. I read the article as a shot towards Eriksson, not necessarily at Walcott. I dont think it could have been a shot at Walcott, it's impossible for a 17 year old who hasnt played a game for his club to be good enough to play for England, Gerrard spoke the truth and said that Walcott wasnt good enough for the squad and should have been replaced.

But its all mounted on Walcott. It makes him bad if ya'll get what I mean.

I hope no Arsenal fans take Gerrard's statements for more than what it is, and you're explanation is spot on.

so that means they'll miss games against charlton, watford and crucially spurs. i wish i could say i was surprised, but Man U have the worst uck in pre-season. this crap is just bloooody typical.

I am strating to hate pre season and the first 5 games, but i think that Man U are better equiped to deal with this now. I say start Ole and Saha and I guess Gigs in the middle if SAF doen't buy someone. I think that they can pull through and get 3 wins without them. I hope everyone will be back to kick Arsenals butss. The we kick theirs.

i really cant understand what the stupid FA is thinking about. rooney's foul probably doesn even deserve a yellow, this foul clearly isnt as malicious as the infamous groin incident. i mean, perhaps there shldnt even b a hearing in the first place! this kind of decisions r increasingly against rooney n manutd huh? crap FA.

let's hope the rest of the squad could b spurred on to win the next 3matches without them..

come on!!! BIG FREAKING DEAL!!! if there were not going to be available for the first 3 games of the season, then a problem is what we would have had. They will be ready to go for the season. I believe this is a good test!! A good team works through problems, and if they can get through this, it will show they might be the squad we have waited 5 years for. They have saha, ole, smith, Rossi.... who are all quality. They cannot be a one dimentional team, which only plays well with rooney. Rooney already knows the ropes, so it is time to let the others get used to playing tough matches, and make us an ALL ROUND TEAM, which can win without a "star" player.

This decision is absolute garbage. The red card was nothing more than player reputation than anything. It wasn't even worthy of a yellow card. I can deal with Scholes' red because it was a stupid foul for a player to commit when they are already on a yellow card. At least this will give Rooney enough time to fully recover from his groin injury.

now u understand why no real manutd supporter supports england. its because the FA is behind them. the FA treats united like absolute crap with that nonsense rio ban, this stupid ban and the countless number of other bans in the last 10 years that have just screwed us. and to think that by having our first ever board member in the FA things would be a little more lenient.

should McClaren play him there or should he remain in centre midfield? with Beckham dropped I thought Lennon would be given his chance but it doesn't look that way.
I'd put him in the center with Hargreaves and replace Lampard with Lennon on the right, I know its harsh but Gerrard is a better attacker than Lampard and with Hargreaves in the middle Gerrard will be able to do what he does best
Stevie will be first choice over Fat Lampard either way. McClaren has named him Vice-Captain which means that Stevie will more likely than not play in the middle with Fat Lampard and Lennon,SWP (if he can get any time of day at cheski) or Pennant will play on the right. Hargreaves had a decent world cup but can't be picked over Fat Frank or Little Lennon
the problem is Lampard is perhaps too good a player to be left out, even though he had a poor world cup. McClaren is probably trying to play them both, although not together in the centre like Erikson did, but unfortunately this is at Lennon's expense.
I think this can be sort out by next euro cup.. too early to plan. Who knows wright philips, pennant or ....... gets revive in this season or next season. Eitehr way it was proven at Liverpool that Gerrard can play the RW effectively and better than most but he SHOULD play in the center and be free to roam. Lampard is one dimensional, and as good at attacking as he is his defensive shortcomings get hidden by Makelele and Essiens defensive skills. Lampard is like the kid at school who does one thing for a big project and gets as much credit as the rest of the group. i think in a friendly McClaren should give this midfield a shot and see if it is explosive, if not keep Lamps in

.......Hargreaves.......

Lennon..............Cole

.........Gerrard........

Lennon or SWP SHOULD be given their chance

He should be brave and go for dropping either StevieG of Lamps - either one dropped would make little impact to the team with Lennon out wide right.

Downing shouldnt even be in the squad - time to give Barry another crack of the whip. THe team looks very much same ol same ol
