Hargreaves to force Man Utd move

Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves is believed to be on the verge of a move to Manchester United if the two clubs can agree a deal.

The 25-year-old starred at Old Trafford for England on Wednesday as he helped the team to a 4-0 win over Greece.

Bayern are reluctant to let Hargreaves go but he has made it clear he wants to join United and £13m could seal it.

Hargreaves will return to Bayern on Thursday where he is expected to reiterate his desire to move.

He is already understood to have had meetings with the Bayern hierarchy where he has stated his intentions.

And Hargreaves publicly signalled his intent for the transfer to go through when he said: "To play (for Manchester United) is a great opportunity and I would be happy if I got that chance.

"Particularly as an England international, it's of interest and you never know if such an opportunity will arise again.

"Now is the time to take the next step to develop even further."

Hargreaves seems determined to seize on his raised profile in England following his combative and tough-tackling displays during the World Cup.

He was seen as England's player of the tournament and continued his impressive rise in the international ranks in the friendly against Greece in new manager Steve McClaren's first game in charge.

Bayern would be reluctant to sell Hargreaves after fellow central midfield star Michael Ballack left them to join Chelsea at the end of last season.

Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness said: "Hargreaves is not a subject of discussion.

"Owen has a contract until 2010 and he will complete it. The issue is closed."

Hargreaves has been at Bayern since moving to the club from Canada as a 16-year-old in 1997.

He helped Bayern to the Champions League crown in 2001 and has also won four Bundesliga titles with the club.

His inclusion in former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson's squad for the World Cup raised eyebrows after he had failed to establish himself since his international debut against Holland in August 2001.

But he was in impressive form in Germany and starred when he played against Sweden and Portugal.

Bayern coach Felix Magath added: "I am not planning to get rid of any players, particularly not Hargreaves - it has never been an issue."

Hargreaves has been linked with numerous Premiership clubs over recent years, including Arsenal, Tottenham and Middlesbrough.

Lehmann blames boots for injury problems
« Reply #793 on: August 17, 2006, 10:21:34 PM »
Reply with quote

Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann has revealed he played through 'massive pain' at the World Cup and has still not fully recovered going into the new Premiership season.

Lehmann has been speaking amid an argument between the Germany players and their federation over free choice of football boots, with the DFB having ordered their players to wear only those manufactured by principal sponsor Adidas.

A players' initiative, spearheaded by Lehmann, has successfully defeated the policy, with DFB president Theo Zwanziger set to overturn the rule and allow players to wear their own boots for the first Euro 2008 qualifier against the Republic of Ireland next month.

Lehmann insisted it was an issue about 'health rather than finance', adding he will never again play with kit other than his own after the problems he experienced at the World Cup.

'After one week of practice (with the national team back in May) I had physical problems and played the full World Cup with them,' Lehmann told PA Sport following Wednesday night's 3-0 win over Sweden, their first game under newly-appointed coach Joachim Low.

'I still have problems right now.

'At the end of the day nobody can tell you what it is but the only thing that was different from my club were the boots and that is not acceptable at all.

'I don't have to reveal my problems but I have had massive problems during the World Cup. It is getting better right now but never again will I agree to play in a different product than I do at Arsenal.'

Lehmann also revealed Arsenal had reacted angrily to the situation.

'The club also says if you return with problems from the national team and the only difference is the shoes then we have to reconsider whether you can still go there,' he said.

'Arsenal are interested in having their players return healthy from the World Cup. If you have to play with different boots during the World Cup - or again next month in the qualifier - and then have problems, that is not acceptable at all.'

Owen Hargreaves has refused to rule out the possibility of a move to Manchester United.

The England midfielder confirmed earlier this week that he was closer to leaving Bayern Munich for the Premiership than he had ever been.

However, fresh reports have emerged in Germany claiming the 25-year-old is mulling over an offer to join United, even though Bayern general manager Uli Hoeness has stated firmly the Bundesliga champions have no intention of releasing one of their star men.

Hargreaves was alerted to the content of the article by telephone yesterday, just hours before his man of the match performance in the 4-0 win over Greece at Old Trafford.

But, while claiming sections of its content may be inaccurate, he opted not to play down the United aspect of it.

'I have not read the article,' he said. 'It is the way it always is with these things. Some of it is accurate, some of it is not.

'I cannot go into specifics but we will see how things pan out over the next few days.'

On last night's evidence, any potential suitors may have to cough up slightly more for the Canada-born player than they bargained for.

Just as he did in the latter stages of England's ill-fated World Cup campaign, Hargreaves excelled in the midfield holding role, showing the discipline to remain in defence as the likes of Gary Neville and Ashley Cole pushed forward, while also covering the forward thrusts of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.

New England coach Steve McClaren has already hinted he may build a team around Hargreaves and could not have been more fulsome in his praise for the player.

'Owen was phenomenal,' he said. 'He set the standard for the others to follow in his attitude and whole game and both Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard followed him.'

By the time England next gather, for the opening Euro 2008 qualifier against Andorra on September 2, Hargreaves' short term future should be decided.

Although he has only just signed a contract at Bayern that would keep him at the club until 2010, he is clearly considering the prospect of riding the wave of his new-found popularity all the way to the Premiership.

'I am at a great club in Bayern Munich,' he said.

'They have been great to me over the last few years.

'But with the World Cup and the way I played there, there has been more attention on me and people are interested.

'I don't want to go into things too much but it is just a case of waiting until the transfer deadline on August 31 and seeing how things pan out.'

Chelsea file Bates complaint

Chelsea have filed a complaint with the Football Association against Leeds United owner Ken Bates and his club.

Chelsea said Leeds chairman Bates had made "rude, insulting and inappropriate comments" in a dispute between the clubs over three young players.

In early August Leeds made a formal complaint to the Football League, which was then referred to the FA, over three alleged illegal approaches by Chelsea.

The players involved are Michael Woods, Tom Taiwo and Danny Rose.

Bates claimed the Blues signed youngsters Woods and Taiwo after making illegal approaches.

He added that the Premiership champions - his former club - failed in their attempts to sign a third teenager, Rose.

A Leeds spokesman said: "We are totally amused and look forward to receiving their Chelsea Football Club's detailed evidence to support their complaint."

In a statement issued on Thursday Chelsea said Bates had made a reference to the Stamford Bridge club's directors that was "discriminatory in terms of race, nationality and religion".

"Such comments have no place in football, a sport which is rightly committed to fighting racial intolerance and bigotry," the statement added.

In June 2005, Chelsea were fined £300,000 and given a suspended three-point deduction by the Premier League following an investigation into claims that they had 'tapped up' Arsenal defender Ashley Cole.

Cole and Blues manager Jose Mourinho were each fined £75,000 for their part in the affair.

Bates sold Chelsea to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2003.

LONDON, Aug 17 (Reuters) - English champions Chelsea have filed a complaint with the Football Association against former owner Ken Bates, accusing him of bringing the game into disrepute.

The club said Bates, now chairman of Leeds United, had made 'rude, insulting and inappropriate comments' when he accused Chelsea two weeks ago of making illegal approaches to players.

Bates, who sold Chelsea to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich in 2003, said he was reporting the London club to the FA for making illegal approaches to sign Tom Taiwo and Michael Wood and when attempting to sign Daniel Rose from second division Leeds.

'There are football procedures in place to deal with that specific dispute,' Chelsea said in a statement on Thursday.

'Chelsea will comply with those, will not discuss the case publicly other than our previously stated position and will contest it vigorously.

'However there are also existing football rules that prohibit rude, insulting and inappropriate comments being made about other club owners, chairmen and personnel.'

Chelsea said Bates had made a reference to Chelsea's directors that was 'discriminatory...in terms of race, nationality and religion'.

'Such comments have no place in football, a sport which is rightly committed to fighting racial intolerance and bigotry,' the statement added.

In June 2005, Chelsea were fined 300,000 pounds ($562,500) and given a suspended three-point deduction by the Premier League following an investigation into claims that they had 'tapped up' Arsenal defender Ashley Cole.

Cole and Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho were each fined 75,000 pounds for their part in the affair.

Hargreaves to sign? Kuyt set for Reds? And plenty more gossip...

CANCEL THAT FLIGHT BACK TO GERMANY
'Owen Hargreaves will sign for Manchester United today' booms The Sun, completely ignoring Bayern Munich's protests that the once much-maligned Canadienglishwelshman will not be leaving Germany.

'The England midfielder is set to be unveiled at Old Trafford after agreeing a dream £13million move.

'Hargreaves, 25, got his wish after revealing United manager Alex Ferguson had made him an offer he could not refuse.'

The Gossip Column isn't sure whether The Sun realises that Fergie will also have to make Bayern an offer they can't refuse, but then £13million for a player who had a good half against Portugal and a good performance against a dodgy Greece side would tempt us. Seriously, he's good, but he's no Nicky Butt...

'Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich insisted they did not want to lose Hargreaves and initially demanded £17million while United only offered £12m,' continues The Sun.

'But once the player signalled his intentions to leave, the two clubs thrashed out a compromise figure.'

The transfer would offer Fergie the chance to pair both of England's understudy midfielders together in the middle of the park, after the earlier capture of Michael Carrick from Spurs. That would presumably see Paul Scholes relegated to the bench or pushed forward to play behind a lone striker, since spending double figures of millions of pounds on a substitute midfielder would seem a bit excessive even for Man Utd.

KUYT FLYING TO LIVERPOOL
Dirk Kuyt is signing for Liverpool. No, Newcastle. No, sorry, we were right the first time - it's Liverpool today.

Although anyone who watched him bumbling around the pitch for Holland last night and completely failing to get near the goal in their 4-0 win would agree that he isn't even fit to play in the Scottish Premier (Okay, that's going a bit far - Ed), the two Premiership heavyweights have been scrapping it out for Kuyt all summer.

And, as with Hargreaves to Man Utd, The Sun is confident that Kuyt to Liverpool will be a done deal by this time tomorrow.

'Freddy Shepherd and boss Glenn Roeder travelled to Dublin to watch Kuyt in action for his country last night. But they were disappointed to learn that the 26-year-old's move to Anfield had already been agreed.

'Kuyt has received permission from Feyenoord to talk to the Reds and gave a further boost by admitting he only wants a move to a club playing in the Champions League this season.'

In a piece of good news for Liverpool, 'Benitez is offloading Florent Sinama Pongolle and Jan Kromkamp to finance the deal.'

Kromkamp will apparently move to PSV Eindhoven for £1.5m, while old Reds boss Gerard Houllier will pay £2m to take Pongolle to Lyon.

The news will come as a bitter blow to Newcastle, who had reportedly offered Kuyt £90,000-a-week.

CASHLEY OFF TO ITALY?
Arsenal are prepared to drop their price for Ashley Cole to £20m, but will not sell him at that price to Chelsea - Inter Milan are interested, says the Daily Mirror.

Cole is likely to start for Arsenal for the first time since the Champions League final against Aston Villa on Saturday, but it could be his last game for the Gunners.

They have 'asked several agents to find a foreign buyer and would be prepared to drop their price to just over £20m.'

'Arsenal are desperate to find another buyer as they would prefer Cole to move anywhere but Chelsea', claims the Mirror.

Meanwhile, the Daily Mail reports that Chelsea have asked about Liverpool's John Arne Riise. Presumably because he keeps scoring past them.

TOMMY OFF TO SCOTLAND
Real Madrid midfielder Thomas Gravesen is ready to snub Newcastle and his former club Everton by joining Celtic, according to The Sun.

That would be good news for Martin O'Neill, since the capture of Gravesen would mean Gordon Strachan was happy to let Bulgaria captain Stilian Petrov make the move to Villa Park that we've all been expecting for the last few weeks.

Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell insisted last night that Petrov would not be on the move, saying that the Scottish champions wanted to build their team around him. But with the Bulgarian eager to test himself in a real league, it may be more than they can do to hang onto him.

AND THE REST
Luton have made a £300,000 offer for Ipswich striker Sam Parkin, while Ipswich have bid £250,000 for Crystal Palace striker Jon Macken...Iran midfielder Andranjik Teymourian could be set for a £500,000 move to Bolton...Sylvain Distin's on, off, on, off £4.5m move from Man City to Middlesbrough currently appears to be off as Boro are unsure about the defender's commitment to the move...Dundee are hoping to sign Rangers duo Moses Ashikodi and Robert Davidson on loan.

McClaren: Goals will come for Defoe
« Reply #797 on: August 17, 2006, 10:48:55 PM »
Reply with quote

Steve McClaren has reassured Jermain Defoe that the goals will come after another England blank for the Tottenham striker.

It is nearly two years since Defoe's last goal for his country - in Poland on his first start.

He won his 17th cap on Wednesday against Greece but was not able to add to his tally as England won 4-0.

McClaren said: "Jermain worked hard, dropped in that hole, retrieved the ball and was a threat.

"He deserved a goal but didn't get one but, if he keeps playing like that, goals will come.

"A lot of work which the two front players did went unnoticed.

"Their jobs were to drop and make the extra man in midfield and both of them did it very well."

Defoe's immediate future in the England set-up looks assured with head coach McClaren short of strikers.

Michael Owen is out with a long-term injury and Wayne Rooney is suspended for the next two games.

Dean Ashton is also on the casualty list after breaking his ankle the before he was due to make his England debut against the Greeks.

Defoe, 23, said: "It's unfortunate for Deano and I feel sorry for him. It's going to be hard for him to take especially when you have a good pre-season and you get injured, it sets you back.

"I have watched him quite a lot and his record for the under-21s was unbelievable and at club level as well.

"He's done well at West Ham and he deserved to be in the squad."

Ashton's misfortune gives Defoe the chance to re-establish himself at international level after being dropped from Sven-Goran Eriksson's World Cup squad.

He is in pole-position to partner Peter Crouch in attack if McClaren sticks with two recognised strikers for next month's Euro 2008 qualifiers against Andorra and Macedonia.

Defoe told thefa.com: "Missing out on the World Cup was obviously a massive blow, but when things happen like you just have to be strong-minded and professional and get on with it.

"I think it makes you hungrier, I've got the fire in my belly and I want to go on and do well.

"I saw all the games while on holiday and it was really difficult to watch them to be honest.

"I was part of the squad and they are a great bunch of lads, and then you have to leave.

"It was hard but I watched all the games and I supported the boys. I thought they did well but they were just unfortunate to lose on penalties to Portugal."

Lehmann needed hospital treatment
« Reply #798 on: August 17, 2006, 10:59:07 PM »

Germany goalkeeper Jens Lehmann needed hospital treatment following Wednesday night's 3-0 win over Sweden, the DFB have confirmed.

The 36-year-old Arsenal custodian was taken by ambulance to a hospital in Gelsenkirchen around midnight after feeling faint while eating in the Arena AufSchalke after the friendly match.

Investigations found hypoglycaemia - a condition which sees the body's blood-sugar level drop below a certain level - to be the root of the problem.

Lehmann was released after a short time in hospital and was able to fly back to London on Thursday.

He should return to training with Arsenal after having further tests and talks with the club's medical staff, according to the DFB's website.

Owen Hargreaves' agent claims the player is planning to again tell Bayern Munich of his desire to sign for Manchester United.

Bayern have so far insisted the England international is not for sale, and have no intention of losing another midfielder after seeing Michael Ballack sign for Chelsea this summer.
However, Hargreaves' agent Roman Grill believes the player's wishes must also be considered.

"It is not a question of whether the club want to discuss a transfer, it is obvious that they need players like Owen and they don't want him to leave, but on the other hand, the player wants to talk," Grill said.

"Owen wants to tell the club how he sees his future."

Hargreaves is now preparing to hold talks with Bayern after returning from international duty with England, although Grill added the 25-year-old midfielder does not want to leave Germany on bad terms.

"Owen has never had any problems with Bayern and has been here for nine years now without any complaints," added Grill.

"The time has now come to evaluate where he is in his career.

"Maybe later (Thursday) he will talk with the coach Felix Magath and see how he views things.

"As he has already said, Owen sees this as an excellent opportunity."
