Mumbai blasts 'dastardly act': Shah Rukh Khan
July 17, 2006 12:57 IST
Bollywood director Karan Johar and superstar Shah Rukh Khan have condemned Tuesday's terrorist attacks on Mumbai.
At a joint news conference on the sidelines of a three-day long Bollywood extravaganza that concluded at the British Academy of Film and Television Arts in central London on Sunday, Shah Rukh described the attacks as a "dastardly act."
Terrorism has become an international phenomenon, Shah Rukh pointed out: "It happened in New York, Madrid, London and now in Mumbai. It is a very sad situation. It is necessary to educate people, to take away the thoughts of violence from society."
Johar said attacks in Mumbai were a clear case of terrorism and people should face the challenges united.
Both Karan Johar and Yash Chopra noted that Bollywood was completely secular.
To a question on the non-resident Indians' importance for the industry, SRK said NRIs have been responsible in helping Bollywood make a breakthrough in the West.
Asked whether they would consider reducing the duration of Hindi films, Yash Chopra and Johar felt it would be difficult; Shah Rukh said it was worth considering.
Yash Chopra said it was not the length that mattered but the intensity of the film. "Music is part of Indian life and culture. We are not ashamed of our music," Chopra said.
"It was quite an awakening when Veer-Zaara was screened in Paris. When we went there, the entire area was jam-packed and we could not even enter the theatre where the film was being screened," the veteran filmmaker said.
Asked whether they produced films keeping the NRIs in view, Johar said: "We produce films which are emotional and attractive to Indians. Being an NRI is a status. They are Indians, whether they live in New York or Bihar. NRIs are more Indians in their heart than most of us."
Shah Rukh said, "Our films not only entertain, but they are for eternity. It is the only mode of entertainment for masses and length of the film is value for money."
Called BAFTA Goes Bollywood, the London programme included presentation and interactive sessions with Johar, SRK, Chopra, Aamir Khan and Preity Zinta.
A new book on Bollywood, called Lights, Camera, Masala -- Making Movies in Mumbai by Sheena Sippy was also showcased on the occasion
The 246-page book -- by daughter of producer Ramesh Sippy with text from scriptwriter Naman Ramachandran -- gives an insider's look at the glitz, grit and grandeur of the world's largest film industry.
Ramachandran called the book a celebration of contemporary Hindi cinema. The book documents the process of making a typical commercial Hindi film through the adventures of a pair of fictitious characters called Vijay and Ravi, who try to make a Bollywood film of their own.
Famous film personalities -- from seasoned scriptwriters like the Salim-Javed duo to megastars like Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan and Aishwarya Rai and successful directors like Ramesh Sippy and Johar -- have shared their experiences and provided insights into filmmaking.
Lights Camera Masala also records the stories of the behind-the-scenes people who are such an intrinsic part of the Bollywood machinery -- a light boy, a make-up artist and a choreographer, among others.

Star system exists in B'wood & it should: SRK
IndiaFM News Bureau Posted online: Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 1420 hours IST Updated: Tuesday, July 18, 2006 at 1423 hours IST
Mumbai, July 18: The British Academy of Film and Television Arts has begun its 'BAFTA Goes Bollywood' weekend with a press conference and screening of Devdas, which was followed by a Q&A session with actor Shah Rukh Khan.
This is the first time the Academy has opened its doors to Bollywood in such a way and the weekend will give many the opportunity to learn more about Indian cinema and introduce the variety and wonder it has to offer.
At the press conference on Friday, held at the Academy's premises at 195 Piccadilly, BAFTA Chairman Duncan Kenworthy welcomed his guests and introduced the start of what would be a celebration of Bollywood. His guests were no strangers to cinema success as Yash Chopra, Karan Johar and Shah Rukh Khan embraced this opportunity to speak to Duncan and the press about all things Bollywood-from the length of the films to their international acceptance.
“This event is essentially to introduce Bollywood to the Academy and people in the arts,” said Duncan Kenworthy who admitted an interest in Indian cinema and the elements that make it so unique.
When asked about the star system in Indian cinema, Shah Rukh Khan agreed it existed but also said it was open to newcomers who in turn became stars and then heralded their own attraction to films.
“I'm from outside the industry and have come from Delhi and am the biggest case in point that yes, the star system is in place in every industry and it should be there,” he said.
“Quentin Tarantino said in one of his interviews that the film industries that survive are the ones that have a star system and he pointed out the Indian film industry in the interview and how it had survived the onslaught of Hollywood and other Western cinema and not given up or become swallowed up by any other form of cinema because there is a star system. So it's a good thing. I don't think it's restricted to a certain talent because there are newcomers who come every once in a while and make it too,” he said.
Quentin Tarantino said in one of his interviews that the film industries that survive are the ones that have a star system.
The three guests, who in themselves represented the most successful pioneers of Indian cinema, also took time to speak about the recent tragedy in Mumbai.
“Before coming out here we just spoke out on camera against these acts and not only expressed support but also asked people to not get misled and not to react or get influenced by people who might use religion as something that makes them go out and use violence,” said Karan Johar.
Yash Chopra reiterated the point that there were no divides within the film industry and he always saw this as a reflection of how things should be.
“The film industry is the most secular in the world. We respect art irrespective of caste, creed and color. We are always together,” he said, generating a respectful silence and agreement from all.
“Terrorism is happening all over the world and people always stand together and evoke the spirit of a city or a country and say we are not going to succumb and we're going to come back,” said Shah Rukh Khan.
“But the truth is that there is no coming back, because it's a very sad situation for people who've suffered. I don't think we should keep propagating the fact that 'let's come back', I personally feel as strong as 'hit back', in whatever sense. Even in the sense of just trying to curb the thought of violence. I think that is what needs to be done. It's a reality we all need to be aware of and we need to educate youngsters and everyone who listens to us, in our homes, in our neighborhoods, our friends and kids and tell them we have to take away that thought of violence,” he said.
'The BAFTA Goes Bollywood weekend' will highlight Indian cinema through screenings of Devdas, Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, Veer Zaara, Dil Chahta Hai and Rang De Basanti alongside a master class in direction by Karan Johar and Interviews with Shah Rukh Khan, Yash Chopra, Aamir Khan and Preity Zinta.

Shahrukh plays a junior artist of the late 70’s in Farah Khan’s Om Shanti Om
By Gaurav Malani (IndiaFM News Bureau), July 21, 2006 - 01:38 IST
To all those who were going overboard cooking their own stories on Farah Khan’s ‘Om Shanti Om’ being a remake of Subhash Ghai’s Karz, they can take a breather. The news is anything but true and just an outcome of ideal minds working overtime. The gossip shaped up from the fact that ‘Om Shanti Om’ happens to be a superhit track from Subhash Ghai’s 1980 film Karz on which Rishi Kapoor shook his leg and had the nation crazy. And some uninformed reporter simply created a story out of it.
“There is no similarities between the two films whatsoever”, confirms a trustworthy industry insider. “It’s a complete new script”. The only coincidental similarity between the two films is that both are based on the theme of reincarnation. But the resemblance ends there. The genres are completely different.
“Om Shanti Om starts showing Shahrukh Khan as a junior artist of the late 70’s. His name is Om. Years later he is reborn and is named Om again”, adds the source. Shahrukh Khan’s blockbuster hit Karan Arjun also dealt with the theme of reincarnation. However ‘Om Shanti Om’ has no resemblance to that movie either.
And to set the record straight, ‘Om Shanti Om’ is a fresh project that Farah Khan is working on and is NOT the re-titled version of Farah’s other film ‘Happy New Year’ that she was supposed to make with Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone. For the time being ‘Happy New Year’ is kept on the backburner and currently Farah is concentrating only on ‘Om Shanti Om’.
With the movie coming out in 2007, we just wish Farah that with ‘Om Shanti Om’ you have a ‘Happy New Year’.
