Name : John Abraham
Date of Birth : 17 December, 1972
Place of Birth : Mumbai, India
Height : 6' 1''
Nationality : Indian
Profession : Actor, Model
John Abraham is a well established model and actor in the Bollywood film industry. He was born on 17th December 1972. He is by far one of the most successful model in India. His dad is a Christian from Aluva, Kerala and his mother is from Iran. Being a Catholic his father added the name 'Abraham' to his son John as a mark of respect to the first patriarch and progenitor of the Hebrew people in the Bible.
That name gave him a noted stand when he entered the modeling field. His revolutionary looks, macho body, baby smiles and nice character made him the highest paid supermodel in India. Being a hot star in the modeling world, he made his film debut in 2003. Not like usual Bollywood heroes who debut in male oriented action subjects, he accepted the erotic emotional Jism (2003). Unfortunately the film didn't do well, but his work was noticed widely. Later the same year came the paranormal Saaya (2003) and romantic Paap (2003); none of them did well at box-office.
His first blockbuster smash hit came in the year 2004 when he took the antihero role 'Kabir' in Dhoom (2004).

John Abraham Growing Up
I am a Mumbaiite. I have lived in Mumbai (Bombay) all my life. I have grown up here, studied here. I?ve played hard and rough through my years at Bombay Scottish School and in college. I?ve earned the respect of friends and the love of a few women. I?ve had my bones broken a few times, and my heart broken a lot.
As a student, I was just a bit above average, always in the top 15 in the class. I never had trouble with academics, but I was never a geek either. I captained the soccer team for Bombay Scottish for a while. I loved soccer, and would have loved to take it up as a career, but apparently, the universe had other plans for me.
I was always an athlete. In school, my forte was the sprint: 100 and 200 meter dashes. There?s something tremendously exhilarating about rushing in front of everybody else in a race. Somehow, that rush never left me. I just do pretty much the same thing these days, except, on motorbikes.
College was good. I did my BA (Hons) in economics. I also took up Taekwondo, under master Javed Khan. That was a stern exercise in discipline and physical toning. Javed Khan is a great teacher. I believe he took up an assignment in Los Angeles, teaching the SWAT force.
After my BA, I went on to do my MMS from Mumbai Educational Trust (MET). I passed out of the course in 1998. I dare say, with still, no clue about what life had in store for me.

The Early Days of John Abraham
I was a Media Planner at Enterprise-Nexus, an ad agency in Mumbai (which is now part of the WPP Group). I wasn?t there long enough to find out if I would have been any good. But for reasons of argument, let?s say I was.
One day, a model ditched the shoot and my boss suggested that I fill in for him. Well, maybe he knew what he was doing, because modelling was the last thing on my mind. Some time later at a party, a woman was pleasantly lewd enough to metion that I filled up my jeans quite nicely. What with one thing and another, I landed a gig for the Live-In Jeans brand.
After I did the Philips press shoot with Atul Kasbekar, one of India?s premier fashion photographers, he declared in an interview that I was the face to watch in the future.
My big break came when I entered the Glad Rags Manhunt in March 99. I almost missed the deadline, but luckily, I was allowed in. I reached the finals and went on to compete in the Philippines. Well, it was a tremendous boost when I ended up as the first runner up in my first international modelling competition.
After that, began a whirlwind of modelling assignments. I was signed on by Carrie Models in Singapore and did a fair amount of work there, and later in Hong Kong, London and New York. When I returned to India, I had a substantial portfolio.
For a while, I did music videos, which was exciting. You may remember my videos of Jhanjhar and Chupke Chupke by Pankaj Udhas

John Abraham on Advertising
For the first time in years, I felt like I was home again. Back in India. Back in advertising, this time, as a model, not a media planner. I do remember those days and the people I worked with.
In India, my first TV Commercial was for Cinthol. I was the first Asian model for Levis. At this point I was having the time of my life. I was one of the top models in the country and I was getting the plum assignments.
I remember the kindnesses and encouragement that I received from people in the industry, too numerous to mention. I have been quite lucky that way.. |

John Abraham on Movies
I didn?t fancy myself as an actor till I was plumb in the middle of it all. When Pritish Nandy offered me a role in a movie project, I was a little nonplussed. Although the project was shelved, it opened up a new door for me. I spent a lot of time watching movies and studying great actors to try and build a screen persona of my very own.
In September 2002, I received a call from Mahesh Bhatt telling me that his daughter would like to make a movie with me. I was quite overwhelmed, since this was a starring role in a project that would be all my very own.
The movie, Jism, was released on Jan 17th 2003. It immediately pushed me into the public eye. After that, I acted in a number of projects that helped me polish the little pebbles that I now recognize as diamonds today.
Dhoom was the most fun I?ve had with my pants on. Mostly because I got to ride around on the Suzuki Hayabusa, reputed at that time, to be the fastest motorcycle in the world. I was hardly acting there. The thrill was all very, very real.
By the time Viruddh came along, I was delving deeply into my abilities to find different things I could do and with the help of some outstanding directors, managed to create a variety of niches where I did my best work.
My next movie, Water opened at the Toronto Film Festival, a humbling event as any I have ever seen. There were many rounds of applause for me and the rest of the cast at the event, and I began to see the beginnings of a wider audience for Indian films. (I refuse the term ?Bollywood?. I find it terribly subservient.)

A salute to the spirit of Mumbai
My heart goes out to the people who lost their lives on those trains. I am glad that the people who live along the railway tracks were the first to react to the tragedy. They are the ones who created a direct conduit between the people who needed medical help and the hospitals who could provide them. I am grateful to the taxicabs who instantly turned themselves into ambulances and hearses to transport those in need.
They have been the first line of defence for all rescue activities in the city, every time the city needed them. These are the people who make up the cities of India. They are the ones who constitute the meaningful arm of society. These are people who are absolutely selfless, and eager to be of service to anybody who needs assistance.
Here are the people who make up the fabric of this great nation. These are the people who make this country different from others. They don’t complain about their circumstances, as miserable as they are. They only give of themselves when the need arrives, to whoever needs help. And they are as organized as the best armies of the world.
Mumbai has never given terrorism the time of day. The city will be back to work in the morning. We will count our dead and mourn them, but no quarter will be given to those who think they can intimidate us. I live in a city that I can be proud of. And the world can learn from us.
I will be back to work tomorrow, like the rest of Mumbai. I will freely give my time to whoever needs it. All proceeds from whatever I can raise in the next few days will go to the people who lost their lives. This is the least I can do to return to the city that has given me so much. Otherwise I do not think I would be worthy of the public adoration that I have received.

Title: John’s life was under threat

John’s life was under threat
"Yes, the death threats to John were real," says Kabir Khan, director of Kabul Express
Kunal M Shah
There have been talks about John Abraham receiving death threats from the Taliban for some time. Now it is confirmed for the first time. Kabir Khan, director of Kabul Express, says, “Yes, the death threats to John were real, not baseless rumours. We got to know about these threats through the Intelligence. But the government was co-operative and gave us plenty of security. We had about 60 armed guards on our sets. This helped us finish the entire film on time. I also had my network of friends who were always with me.”
Kabir who has been making documentaries for the last ten years is best known for his work Taliban Here and Beyond currently being aired on Discovery channel and Titanic Sinks in Kabul which has won several awards. So what prompted him to make this film?
“Although Indian films are very popular in Kabul, the Taliban has banned them. Taliban is not in power but they still operate as a terrorist organisation from the borders of Afghanistan. They obviously did not want the world to know that Afghanistan is slowly but surely returning to normalcy,” says Khan. “Despite such hostile circumstances, I was sure that I wanted to shoot the film only in Afghanistan. Afghanistan is unique and cannot be replicated elsewhere. It is a country which has been ravaged by war for 25 years. But, I wanted my entire cast and crew to be as excited as I was, about it. Thankfully, all were equally excited and we had a great time making the film.”
The film has been penned by Kabir and is based on his own experiences in Afghanistan. “I have been making documentaries for the last 10 years and have shot in over 50 countries. But, to make something for the big screen was always on the cards,” he says. How and when did Yashraj Films step in as producer? Kabir says, “I was not sure if they'd want to do a film like this. However, Aditya Chopra read the script and liked it. He said that the film could appeal to the Indian as well as the international audiences. However, we never made any commercial compromises and shot the film according to the scripts. I have shot with complete conviction and it's a film made with honesty.”

Hindustan Times John all set to play a Rockstar
In case you're wondering why Bollywood's current heartthrob John Abraham has been so low-profile lately, the fact is he has been learning guitar for his role in Imtiaz Ali's film Rock Star.
So, when you see him take to the stage as a long-haired rock musician you know John won't be faking it.
"Yes I'm going to get those strings right. No point in strumming senselessly. Nowadays the audience has got very wise. They can tell when an actor is faking it. In fact, I learnt to play the flute for my role in Water," John told IANS.
"At this rate I could become a one-man band. But I didn't have to learn to play ride the bike for Dhoom. Seriously, role ke bahaane it's good fun to expand your horizons. I don't want to be an actor just to look good and wear trendy clothes on screen. I want to go deeper into my characters. It's great fun to prepare for a role."
"John shocked me with his preparedness. Whether it was getting into a dhoti or playing the flute or getting the body language of his character right, John put his soul into Water. We've become really close friends. I'm looking forward to working with him again in Exclusion."
John smiled at Mehta's compliments and said: "By the grace of god, I've plenty of prolific work on my plate. I love the family of directors I'm working with - Deepa, Sriram Raghavan (Happy Birthday), Nagesh Kukunoor (Ashayen), Imtiaz Ali (Rock Star), Anurag Kashyap (No Smoking).
"If you listen to the scripts you would wonder why I'm doing such unusual films when I could be doing hardcore commercial cinema. It's because I want to grow as an actor."
Incidentally, Saif Ali Khan is the other actor in Bollywood who plays the guitar. Maybe the two actors can jam together?
"Why not?" laughed John!

Bollywood World John and Ash get together in 'Happy Birthday' Oct 13, 2006
Mumbai, Producer Gaurang Doshi has roped in John Abraham and Aishwarya Rai for his mystical romantic musical "Happy Birthday" and says "they look like Adonis and Venus together".
They have not been paired before. "But if you close your eyes you can see how good John and Aishwarya look together," Doshi told IANS.
To be directed by Sriram Raghavan, who earlier did Ram Gopal Varma's "Ek Hasina Thi", "Happy Birthday" starts shooting in January.
"We had signed John about a year back. But we needed a strong charismatic and popular leading lady because 'Happy Birthday' isn't about just the male protagonist. When Ash said yes, everything fell into place. She has never been seen with John before," said Doshi.
John is on the lookout for new leading ladies. In "Water" he's paired with Lisa Ray, in "Baabul" with Rani Mukerji and in "Salaam-e-Ishq" with Vidya Balan for the first time.
"The catch-line for 'Happy Birthday' will be, 'Those who don't believe in magic will never find it.' We needed a magical pair. John and Ash have the quality."
"I think Aishwarya and I will make a good team. It's a great script. Sriram is a super-director, and we're excited," said John.
The music score is by Vishal-Shekhar.
