PREITY ZINTA HAS GOT AUDIENCES RAVING ABOUT HER PERFORMANCE IN KANK

The beautiful Preity Zinta as Rhea Saran, the fashion editor, married to Shah Rukh Khan’s Dev Saran, has got audiences raving about her performance. Excerpts from the time MovieTalkies caught up with the actress for an exclusive interview:

Tell us something about your character in the film?

I play Rhea Saran, a fashion editor of a magazine in New York. She is a power woman and is very career-oriented. It is a very sprightly character involving lots of powerful dialogues. She is a person who does not overtly display too much of her emotions but nevertheless is emotional, containing her inner feelings.

What attracted to you to the script of this film?

The script was interesting because of the difference in the subject - the way it deals with relationships. Karan has earlier also made films which are based on relationships but they were more candy floss, more fun and were easy in their set-ups. This film has got a very different feel to it in terms of complexities of marriage and relationships. And that is what attracted me to the script of this film.

What is so special about Karan that makes him the most sought after director in commercial cinema?

Karan is Karan. Hmmm, I don’t know what is special about him but everything about him is special! He is very talented, very funny, pushes you all the time to get what he wants; and he is very sure of what he wants from his actors in the film, and if ever there is a dull moment on the set he brightens it up.

Something that you don’t like about Karan

Nothing in particular really. I like everything about him. He is a wonderful person, very funny, very talented and extremely gifted. Yes, I don’t like it when he says ‘One more take’, ‘It’s mind-blowing…. It’s okay……but can I have one more take?’

What kind of message does this film convey?

I think it is for the audience to decide the kind of message that it tries to convey. What I would say from my end is, it is about relationships and says you must marry for the right reasons. Don’t just get married for the sake of it, or because it is convenient, or because you don’t have any other option. I think marriage is a beautiful relationship of two people coming together and if you want to get married, get married for the right reasons and marry for love.

How was the shooting experience in New York?

New York is one of my favorite cities in the world. I love going there again and again and it was fun going back there especially because we had shot Kal Ho Na Ho there. But this time it was very very cold and we had a hurricane coming in and the weather was driving us nuts. But despite all this it was wonderful shooting in New York.

The most touching moment of the film

There are a couple of them. I have actually not seen the whole film but I think this is Karan’s most sensitive writing for sure. The scenes are very delicately balanced with emotions and drama so I think the whole film is great. I can’t really pin point at particular scenes and if I do I have to tell you the whole story! The whole film has its ups and downs.

Your favorite song in the film?

My favorite song shooting-wise would be Rock n Roll Soniye. It was good fun shooting for the song. We had rains for four days so we were holidaying and after that we started shooting for the song. But the music is fantastic. All the songs are beautiful depending on the preferential tastes of the viewers, like there is a ballet, then there is a song called ‘Where’s the party tonight?’ which is a big item song, but my all-time favorite song would be the title song of the film.

This is perhaps the greatest cast of Indian cinema put together in the film. Tell us something about your co-stars?

Well, Amitji, Shah Rukh and I, we have worked together in the past. Shah Rukh and I have done a couple of films together and so is the case with Rani. So it’s great working with all of them. Abhishek was the only one with whom I worked for the first time and it was a wonderful experience.

An interview from glamsham...

From shooting abroad to doing ads to performing at award functions, Preity Zinta has a hectic schedule.

The actress, who is doing an advertisement shoot after a long stint abroad, has to again rush to Dubai to perform at the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards.

"After this I immediately fly to Dubai for IIFA, just for one day. I'll be performing a Shiamak Davar's choreography," Preity told IANS in an interview.

"I have yet to sit and finalise my item with him. The decision was taken overnight. Can you believe it, this is the first time that I'm performing at such a short notice. I haven't even started rehearsing," she said.

After the IIFA function, Preity returns to Mumbai to complete Sajid Nadiadwala's delayed "Jaan-e-Man" and Karan Johar's "Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna" (KANK). Those who have seen her in Johar's film have declared her an outright winner in a role that entails her doing a complete makeover.

"Yes, Shah Rukh (Khan)'s wife Gauri and Jaya (Bachchan) aunty, whose opinion I value immensely, seem to be thinking highly of me in the film.

"I must say it felt good to be wearing clothes that sometimes cost more than the location, ha ha. But, seriously, all credit must go to Karan for being one of the best directors, and Manish Malhotra for being one of the best stylists in the world. I couldn't have done it without them."

However, it was a big challenge for Preity to get under the skin of her character in KANK.

"In my career of 22-23 films, I have never been more unsure of how to approach a role. People are commenting on my looks. But that was the least of my worries. I had to play a woman who didn't seem to airdrop into New York from Mumbai. My character Rhea has to blend into the milieu, and not just in dress but also demeanour."

"Yeah, it was tough. Thank god for my co-stars Shah Rukh, Rani (Mukherjee), Abhishek Bachchan (who, I confess, out-chatters me) and Mr. (Amitabh) Bachchan, who's like the Mount Everest of acting."

Preity is all praise for her co-star Rani.

"By the way, Rani has never looked more glamorous and in-character. There is one sequence of hers with Abhishek where I have cried. Normally I am not much of a weepy person in movies. I like to keep it all inside. Only my family and close friends have seen the vulnerable side of me. For others... sorry, I don't want to come across as a drama queen."

More makeover for Preity - she is the cover girl of the first Indian issue of posh international women's magazine Marie Claire.

"I guess the bubbly perky Preity has currently taken a backseat. KANK sees me like never before. And the Marie Claire cover didn't expect me to be the typical Preity either. The magazine has undertaken the 'let-me-be-me' campaign for Indian women.

"The inaugural cover was supposed to represent the resolute no-nonsense but still fun and feisty face of the Indian woman. I like being in that slot. I am glad if I am being taken to be a woman of substance. Isn't that what all women crave to be?

"The picture was meant to be less stylish, more substantial and more attuned to the rhythm of workaday womanhood. Yeah, I do like to see myself as a woman with an opinion."

For now, this woman with an opinion on life and art is all set to remain in India for one month after her trip to Dubai.

"This would be my longest stay at home in recent times. In July, I go for an event to London, then probably attend the BAFTA awards and finally get a week off for myself before joining my friends Bobby Deol and Abhishek for Shaad Ali's 'Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom'. All in all, this is quite a hectic time for me. And I am enjoying every bit of it."

          Subhash K Jha, Mumbai

I am just a paid slave: Preity Zinta

Preity Zinta hasn't disappeared after the release of Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna (KANK), she's just in London shooting for Shaad Ali's Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom.

"Just because I'm so much out of the country, people feel free to say and write what they like. I wish I were at home so I could see what was going on. But then I'm just a paid slave. No time to savour the fruits of my job," Preity told IANS over the phone from London.

She feels she should halt to enjoy the success.

"You see I'm a bit of an idiot. I never take that crucial pause after a release to savour its success. I'm told KANK has raised quite a storm in India. Well, good that's what movies should do."  She is baffled by the criticism.

"I don't understand why some people feel Karan has gone too far. Arrey! People say, make something different. And when a filmmaker actually takes the plunge into a deeper end, people accuse him of going too far.

"I feel proud to be in a film that pushes the envelope in mainstream cinema. I want to hug Karan for making KANK. In fact, I'll get my chance to do so because Karan is coming to London."

Mention the limited space provided for Preity in the film, which revolves around infidelity, and she retorts: "Abhishek and I are like the anchors in the plot. I was never more scared of a role. A little bit this or that way, and my character could've toppled over.

"Thank god Rhea doesn't come across as a b*tc*. I constantly kept looking at Karan for reassurance. I never had to be directed so closely before. 'I don't want Preity Zinta. I want Rhea Saran,' Karan kept saying.

"As for the footage, hey, we don't really live in those times any more when actors measured the length of each other's roles with measuring tapes, do we? Cinema has grown up. So have actors. KANK is proof of it."

All of Bollywood seems to have descended on London. Last month it was the combined units of Priyadarshan's Bhagam Bhaag and Vipul Shah's Namaste London turning London into a mini Bollywood. Followed by Nikhil Advani's Salaam-e-Ishq and Shaad Ali's Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom which created a dhoom in the city. Preity agrees.

"Indeed, you can't step out on the street here without bumping into one or the other of your colleagues. I've been shooting with Shaad for two weeks. We call him Fidel on the sets. Why? Because with his beard he looks like the young Fidel Castro."

Abhishek and Bobby Deol are her co-stars in Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom.

"Abhishek has just arrived. And Bobby was here. It was good to catch up with him after so long. We had a great time during Soldier. Bobby remains the same. Quiet and wise."

Jhoom Baraabar Jhoom is Preity's first film with Ali.

"He's so quiet and yet so much in charge on the sets. I've never had so much fun on location. But then come to think of it, I always make sure I've fun."

So far, Preity has tried to be a part of progressive cinema.

Her first film Kya Kehna! was about unwed motherhood. Now, KANK is about the cult of crumbling matrimony.

"Yeah, I like being part of cinema that goes beyond stereotypes. Even my next release Jaan-e-Mann isn't quite the normal film."
