Movies you liked but did not fare well in the box office.

Lets discuss some movies which we liked .. but did not fare well at the box office .. possibly because they did not have big stars, or maybe because the story was not conventional.
I am watching a movie called Socha Na Tha .. starring Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia. A well made romantic movie.
I would add "Dil Se" to the list of movies which bombed at the box office but I liked. I think viewers like happy endings and SRK and Manisha Koirala's tragic ending did not fare well with the viewers.

Nice thread.
Its really devastating to note that there are many good movies out there but they dont get their due recognition due to several factors such as box-office results and casts among others. More often than not its the bloody box-office which dampens it. I remember Shoba Dea saying that movies need to be catered for the people's needs. If they want a highly commercial flick then they should do more movies on that. I also remember Shabana Azmi saying that art films can get their due recognition if the ppl change their attitude towards cinema. I second Shabana Azmi's notion.
I've watched loads of Indian movies which can put films like Kal Ho Naho, HDDCS, Hum Tum and Maine Pyar Kyu Kiya to shame. No offense. I classify these deserving movies as highly underrated. Films like Maqbool, My Brother Nikil and Raincoat deserves much more.
My Brother Nikil touches on a sensitive issue and the message was really touching. Just like Phir Milenge. Maqbool defined the whole notion of cinema and Raincoat didn just win the National Award for nothing.
And I agree to what Prem said. Dil Se is such a good movie but ppl want a happy ending so the end bit didn quite go well with the masses. Thats the attitude ppl have. Tho Dil Se didn do well at the BO, it was critically acclaimed. What do you expect from Maniratnam.
Even if Satyajit Ray is alive and making movies...I highly doubt his films will fare well at the BO.

I think even Yuva was kinda mediocre at the box-office. It was highly critical tho.

I love Maqbool. Loved every bit of it. And Page 3 too. I was soo pissed when I read that a stupid, crappy and circus movie like Paheli can even try to make it for the Oscar entry while a classy movie like Page 3 got dissed. And I loved Raincoat to death. It can be a bit slow moving but hey its THE MOVIE to watch.
And tho Silsilay flopped its still a good watch. Anything with a good women theme am game.
