Black makes a clean sweep of IIFA awards

K.K. Mahajan, Asha Parekh, O. P. Dutta honoured for Life Time Contribution

Dubai: Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Black won the maximum number of titles in the popular categories at the 7th International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) awards held at the Airport Expo here on Friday night.

The Black claimed the Best Film, Best Director (Sanjay Leela Bhansali), Best Actor (Amitabh Bachchan), Best Actress (Rani Mukherji) and Best Supporting Actress (Ayesha Kapur) awards. In the technical awards category, the film bagged trophies for cinematography, editing, sound recording and background score.

Mr. Bhansali did not attend the function. His sister Bela Sehgal, who edited Black, collected the award.

Mr. Amitabh Bachchan, who is also IIFA Brand Ambassador, announced that next year's IIFA awards ceremony would be held in Yorkshire (U.K.). The first IIFA event was held in 2006 at the Millennium Dome in London.

Special awards

IIFA gave away a host of special awards this year — the Life Time Contribution to Cinema awards went to cinematographer K. K. Mahajan, actress Asha Parekh and writer-director-producer O. P. Dutta. The Idea Glamorous Star award went to Preity Zinta while directors Nagesh Kuknoor and Pradeep Sarkar shared the Idea Creative Person award. The Idea award for Innovation went to the animation film, Hanuman.

Nagesh Kuknoor won the Best Story award for Iqbal and Abhishek Bachchan received the Best Actor in a Supporting Role award for Sarkar. Boney Kapoor's No Entry bagged the best entertainer award in the UAE and Hollywood producer Ashok Amritraj was honoured with the Global Indian award.

Vidya Balan (Parineeta) and Shiney Ahuja (Hazaron Khwahishein Aisi) received the Best Debut awards.

Javed Jaffri received the first film award of his career for his performance as a comedian in Salaam Namaste and Nana Patekar was given the Best Actor in a Negative Role for Apaharan. Manmohan Shetty, the film's producer, collected the award on Nana's behalf.

Alisha Chinai (Kajra re) received the Best Playback Singer (female) trophy and Himesh Reshammiya (Aashiq Banaya Aapne) received the Best Playback Singer (male) award. Gulzar bagged the best lyricist award for Kajra re. Shaad Ali, director of Bunty aur Babli, collected the trophy. Music composer trio, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy received the Best Music Director award for Bunty aur Babli.

Best Choreographer

Vaibhavi Merchant bagged the Best Choreographer award for Kajra re. Parineeta won awards for Best Screenplay, art direction, make-up, costumes and song recording.

Performances

The star-studded extravaganza saw performances by Hrithik Roshan, Salman Khan, Akshay Kumar, who made an entry riding a camel, and Ms. Preity Zinta. Saif Ali Khan paid a musical tribute to Rishi Kapoor while Ms. Rani Mukherji re-lived the magic of Black by her performance on stage. She was joined by her co-actor in the film, Mr. Amitabh Bachchan.

Mammooty welcomes

Malyalam actor Mammooty welcomed IIFA's invitation to actors from other Indian languages to the event this year. "I refuse to be called a south Indian actor. We are all Indians.

``Other language films should also be nominated in the awards categories for IIFA, as it is an international Indian awards function.

``Indian cinema does not comprise only Hindi movies," he said. — UNI

IIFA Bollywood awards 2006 Dubai special report

The much-awaited IIFA (International Indian Film Academy) weekend is drawing to a close following an awards ceremony full of Bollywood’s legendary glitz and glamour.

Held in the cosmopolitan city of Dubai, which is well-known as a popular haunt within Bollywood’s A-list celebrity circle, the weekend proved another success for organisers Wizcraft. However, a few hiccups along the way might have caused some embarrassment, including the general no-show at the much-hyped fashion show, which was supposed to feature some of the biggest names in the industry (oops!).

The awards ceremony itself remained fast-paced and entertaining. Of course, Black took home the majority of awards, which is hardly a surprise. But consider the IIFA ceremony is the last Bollywood awards show of the season, its less about the winners list, and more about performances.

Black’s honours included Amitabh Bachchan as Best Actor, Rani Mukherjee for Best Actress and child star Ayesha Kapoor as Best Supporting Actress. Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali also picked up the Best Director trophy for the film, in addition to the Best Film award.

In the other major award categories, Best Supporting Actor went to Abhishek Bachchan for his performance in Ram Gopal Varma’s film Sarkar, Best Actor in a Negative Role to veteran actor Nana Patekar for his role in Apharan, Best Actor in a Comic Role to Javed Jaffrey for Salaam Namaste, and the award for Best Story to filmmaker Nagesh Kukunoor for Iqbal. The film Bunty Aur Babli also did well at the Idea IIFA Awards night, bagging honours for Best Playback Singer (Female) for Alisha Chinai and Best Lyricist for the well-known artiste Gulzar. Composer-turned-singer Himesh Reshammiya took home the Best Playback Singer (Male) trophy for chartbuster Aashiq Banaya Aapne from the movie of the same name. Other winners included Vidya Balan from Parineeta and Shiney Ahuja from Hazaaron Khwahishen Aisi for STAR TV Best Debut.

The Idea IIFA Award for Outstanding Contribution to Indian Cinema went to veteran actress Asha Parek, veteran filmmaker O P Dutta and cinematographer K.K. Mahajan, with Hollywood-based Indian producer Ashok Amritraj receiving a special honour for his contribution towards promoting Indian cinema abroad. Idea Cellular presented two very special awards- the Idea Glamorous Star of the year to Preity Zinta and the Idea Creative person of the year went to Directors Pradeep Sarkar and Nagesh Kukunoor.

Stars taking to the stage for a song and dance included Salman Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Preity Zinta, Amitabh Bachchan, Hrithik Roshan, Akshay Kumar, Saif Ali Khan, Fardeen Khan, Dia Mirza, Upen Patel, and soon-to-be-launched newcomers Sikander Kher and Neha Oberoi. An impressive line-up indeed!

Akshay Kumar certainly made the coolest entrance (once again) by riding on top of a camel and smoking a Sheesha. Rani and Amitabh re-visited Black with a successful Broadway-style take on the film, together with youngster Ayesha Kapoor. Salman performed to an energetic melody of his hits, which pleased the audience immensely. Hrithik Roshan, despite his slightly questionable attire, brought the house down with his dancing skills. Preity looked great whilst dancing to a variety of different Bollywood tracks with an Arabian feel. Saif Ali Khan paid a nice tribute to yesteryear hero Rishi Kapoor, who later joined him on stage. Fardeen Khan did a track from his forthcoming movie, Kurbani, which incidentally is a re-make of the movie ‘Qurbani’ which his father Feroz Khan starred in 26 years ago.

All in all, everyone helped contribute to the entertainment quota and the audience certainly seemed to have a great time. When it comes to awards ceremonies, IIFA improves more and more each year. With the dismal Filmfare awards this year, IIFA has a real chance to take the crown as Bollywood’s leading awards show in years to come.

In terms of venue, Dubai did a fairly decent job as the host city, but unfortunately the awesome buzz created by Amsterdam last year was missing in 2006 and the fans were not provided enough opportunities to interact with their Bollywood idols. Next year, with the IIFAs being brought back to the UK (although Yorkshire instead of London), lets see whether the British can take the IIFA weekend to an even higher level.
