A KAPOOR COMBINE
Rishi Kapoor’s son Ranbir and Anil Kapoor’s daughter Sonam are making their debut in Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Saaw-ariya (Beloved).
Yes, we know that you have read all about it. But what you probably don’t know is that the love story currently on the floors is a musical based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s White Nights. A tender and romantic story, it is about the chance encounter of two people Raj and Sakina and their obsession with each other over four successive nights.

Salman Khan and Rani Mukerji too are part of this eagerly awaited film from Bhansali written by Prakash Kapadia.

Monty Sharma: “Music of Saawariya is going to be a rocking madness”
Faridoon Shahryar, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, July 01, 2006]

“Saawariya music is going to be a rocking madness; it won't disappoint people who are expecting the world from the next Sanjay Leela Bhansali film after a songless Black,” says Monty Sharma, the music composer who is making his debut with Bhansali’s much anticipated Saawariya that is also serving as the launch-pad of star-kids Ranbeer and Sonam Kapoor.

As a Keyboardist Monty played for many music directors like Sajid-Wajid, Nikhil-Vinay, Milind Sagar, Sanjeev-Darshan etc. but he gained recognition when he was asked by Ismail Darbar to do the music arrangements for Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (title track) and Nimbuda. Bhansali saw the spark in him and asked him to do the background score for his Shahrukh-Aishwarya starrer Devdas and also the Devdas theme that was featured on the audio cd of the music soundtrack. After parting ways with Ismail, SLB assigned Monty the Herculean task of designing the background score for Black.

“When Sanjay ji narrated Black, he wanted music for a deaf, dumb and blind character. He said that it should touch a person in the simplest way. I composed a small theme and he simply loved it. The visuals of the film were very powerful. And when there is Sanjay ji as the director, Amit ji and Rani as artistes, I had to push the limits to get the best out of myself,” says Monty. How did it feel when Mr Bachchan praised your effort during his speech at the Filmfare Awards? “That was the greatest honour. To be praised by Amit ji was a great morale booster.”

Monty won the best background score award at Screen, Filmfare and Zee. From here on he wishes to do some really good stuff as music is passion for him. But as he is climbing the stairs of success, he also wants to acknowledge the role played by his grandfather Pandit Ram Prasad Sharma, who according to him is responsible for 99% of the music in Bollywood. “He started playing Trumpet in the 1930s and 1940s. It was an era when even Naushad sahib was not on the scene yet. He taught many of the music directors like Laxmikant-Pyarelal, Uttam Singh, Anu Malik etc. Due to his experience, his observation was invaluable. I learnt piano from him. I never use any samplers or artificial forms of music making that most of the people are doing these days. He taught me the importance of originality. And that’s my biggest plus point.”

So, apart from Saawariya, any other film offers? “Yes, there are quite a few. But I would like to do full justice to Saawariya first of all and then think about something else.” Being the blue eyed man of Sanjay Leela Bhansali, you must be inviting envy quite-a- plenty. “I don't think about all that. But I guess, when you are moving up in life, there are bound to be some tongues wagging and if there are no attempts to pull you down, then you are going nowhere.” Finally, could you tell us something about the sound of Saawariya. “My lips are sealed. Can’t talk anything about it right now. But as I had said earlier, it will be rocking.”

Dilip Kumar's sister-in-law to make a comeback

By Judi Silva ©2006 Bollyvista.com

After 50 years, yesteryear actress Begum Para (who is now 80 years young) is all set to make a comeback with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's 'Saawariya'. Begum Para is mother of actor Ayub Khan and sister-in law of thespian Dilip Kumar. She was last seen in the movie 'Kar Bhala' (1956) with Bhagwan Dada.

'Saawariya' stars Sonam Kapoor (Anil Kapoor's daughter) and Ranbir Kapoor (Rishi Kapoor's son) in the lead roles. Para plays Sonam's grandmother in the film.

Interestingly enough, it is believed that Begum Para was a Rakhi sister of Ranbir's grandfather Raj Kapoor. She says that after all these years she is glad to be back in films and working with Raj Kapoor's grandson.

Saawariya is my most difficult film: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Nov 20, 2006

Mumbai, Ace director Sanjay Leela Bhansali is busy shooting "Saawariya", which he says is his most difficult film since he's working with absolute newcomers.

"Saawariya" stars new entrants Ranbir and Sonam. While Ranbir is the son of Rishi and Neetu Kapoor, Sonam is Anil Kapoor's daughter.

"It's the most difficult film I've made so far. I'm working with rank newcomers though Ranbir, Sonam and I are like a big family. It takes a little more time for them to grasp a scene. But being from illustrious film families, their grasping power is remarkable," Bhansali told IANS in an interview.

The director, however, was happy that there was no interference from the star parents.

"The best thing about Ranbir and Sonam's parents is they never interfere. Rishi Kapoor-Neetu Singh and Anil-Sunita behave as though their kids are in boarding school," he said.

A furniture dealer had recently filed a case against Bhansali, who said the turbulent period had re-instated faith in himself.

"I think the turbulence makes you realize that nothing can shake your faith."

Excerpts from the interview:

Q. You've completed two schedules of "Saawariya"

A. "Saawariya" went on the floors after one year of pre-production. It's the most difficult film I've made so far. After "Black" and its sensational performances by Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji, I'm working with rank newcomers though Ranbir, Sonam and I are like a big family.

It takes a little more time for them to grasp a scene. But being from illustrious film families, their grasping power is remarkable.

Q. Do the newcomers make "Saawariya" a special challenge?

A. Yes, because every nuance of theirs is spontaneous. It's up to the director to cultivate their skills. After working with Ranbir and Sonam I've become far more articulate than I was during "Black". I need to be far more expressive with these kids. They need to know what I want and when they give the correct expressions they need to be told why they're correct.

Sometimes I love them both and at other times I fire the hell out of them. Ranbir and Sonam have surrendered themselves completely to the screenplay. They've the right to say what they like to. And I've the same right.

Q. Do Ranbir and Sonam match up to your expectations?

A. Oh completely! They've taken me completely by surprise. The decision to take Ranbir and Sonam was right. They look fresh and stunning as a pair. To watch them together brings so much joy and hope to my creativity. The hard work that the two kids are putting in is amazing. I feel I'm moulding clay, watching it take unpredictable and exciting shapes in front of me.

Q. The fact that they belong to well-known film families must count.

A. Oh yes! But the best thing about Ranbir and Sonam's parents is they never interfere. Rishi Kapoor-Neetu Singh and Anil-Sunita behave as though their kids are in boarding school. It's so wonderful to have two new actors who are completely at the disposal of this film.

Since Ranbir and Sonam have never acted before, they perform in a way that's completely theirs. Every shot is a revelation here. Suddenly they spring a completely unexpected expression. I've never been more alert as a filmmaker.

Q. You've been through some trying times. A furniture dealer had filed a case against you...

A. Thank god for this country's judicial system. Somehow troubles seem to hound me even as I try to get away from my problems. Maybe that's my destiny though I don't enjoy it at all. But it was a turbulent period because misinformation and accusations were being thrown around.

Sadly a lot of other issues cropped up at the same time. My mother fell ill. I think the turbulence makes you realise that nothing can shake your faith. My focus never shifted from my work. I firmly believe the more people trouble me the better I get at my work. I've discovered new reserves of energy within me to guard my creativity and self-esteem. I've realised a human being has unlimited depths of inspiration as long as you believe in yourself.

Q. Were you lonely while you fought your legal battle?

A. Why should I expect everyone to leave their work to offer me a shoulder? It was my battle and I fought it. It felt reassuring when people like Amitji sent a message saying he's there for me. My colleagues were concerned for me.

Q. "Saawariya" releases next Diwali?

A. Isn't that exciting! Every big film vies for a Diwali release. Unfortunately none of my films have had a Diwali release. Diwali is my favourite festival and "Saawariya" launches two talented new kids. Plus it's a musical love story. Diwali feels like the right time for this one.
