Distributor pays Rs 7.4 cr for rights
By: Sarita Tanwar June 17, 2006
A distributor has picked up the Mumbai rights to a film starring Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar for a record Rs 7.4 crore. The sale stunned Bollywood, as it is over twice the amount paid for the Aamir Khan hit Rang De Basanti, which went for Rs 3.5 crore.
Ashtavinayak Films, one of Bollywood’s leading distributors, snatched Sajid Nadiadwala’s Jaan-e-Mann for the record sum, which includes print and publicity costs.
Groundbreaking
Experts say the deal is poised to change the economics of Bollywood. Over the last few years, the market has opened up tremendously. With the advent of multiplexes, the collections in major cities have skyrocketed. Rang De Basanti, for example, made over Rs 50 crore all over the country. More recently, the countrywide collections for the Aamir Khan-Kajol starrer Fanaa were a whopping Rs 32 crore in just seven days. Feroz Nadiadwala’s Phir Hera Pheri is the latest big hit, which has raked in Rs 27 crore in the first week, despite releasing much fewer prints than Fanaa.
‘They’ve done well’
Nadiadwala said, “Records are meant to be broken. Ashtavinayak Films have been doing very well for themselves. We had a very good association for Mujhse Shaadi Karogi.”
Rupen Amlani, marketing and distribution director, Ashtavinayak Films, said, “I cannot disclose the amount that Ashtavinayak has bought Jaan-e-Mann for. Rang De Basanti was sold in Mumbai for Rs. 3.5 crore. We had bought Main Hoon Na for Mumbai territory at a far higher price than that.
And Jaan-e-Mann cost more than Main Hoon Na. Akshay in particular is very hot. In fact, we are even producing a film called Bhaagam Bhag with him in the lead.”
Scared? Director Kalpana Lajmi
Record fee worries smaller film-makers
The industry is both shaken and stirred by the news. Smaller filmmakers are scared that this is the start of a new trend of higher prices all round. “This could be terrible,” said director Kalpana Lajmi.
“It may start a trend. There should be unity in the industry. What will happen when producers like me are ready with their projects?” Indu Mirani, a trade analyst, believes that the price is just too high. “Despite Akshay’s and Salman’s popularity, I think it will be difficult to recover that much.”
There are many possible reasons why Jaan-e-Mann fetched such an exorbitant price. Of late, business in major cities has skyrocketed, primarily due to the hike in ticket prices at multiplexes, and a huge jump in the number of shows.
Of course, the lead stars also contributed. This will be Salman Khan’s first release in a long time, while Akshay Kumar is the new box-office favourite. Ashtavinayak Films made the deal with Nadiadwala only after the super success of Phir Hera Pheri, which put the producer in a stronger position to bargain.
Apparently, Raj Mehta of Ashtavinayak Films had originally offered Nadiadwala Rs 5 crores for the film (Mumbai territory) on the day of the launch itself. But Nadiadwala reportedly turned it down, perhaps knowing that he would get a better deal later.
The film suffered several ups and downs, due in part to Salman’s arrests. Sajid had first negotiated a deal with Nimbus Motion Pictures, but after Salman’s arrest, Nimbus backed out of the project, fearing a long delay.
Jaan-e-Mann, which is looking at a September 2006 release, is being directed by first-timer Shirish Kunder, husband of choreographer-director Farah Khan.

Sajid Nadiadwala - "Records are meant to be broken" By Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Tuesday, June 20, 2006]

The news has spread like wild fire. Film maker Sajid Nadiadwala's 'JAANEMAN' has broken Mumbai territory record and isn't he grinning ear to ear?
Leading distributors 'Shree Ashtavinayak Films' have snatched JAANEMAN for a record sum of Rs. 7.4 crore and experts claim that this deal is poised to change the economics of Bollywood. Further stunning is the fact that this price is more than twice the amount paid for 'Rang De Basanti' [3.5 crore] and also much higher than 'Main Hoon Na'!
This is what Nadiadwala has to say about the biggest turn in his professional journey - "Records are meant to be broken. We believe we have a good product in our hand. Besides we have had a good association with Ashtavinayak films for 'Mujhse Shaadi Karogi' and they themselves are doing well."
Analysts also say that the reason for 'JAANEMAN' to fetch such an exorbitant price is multi-fold. First and foremost the presence of its lead stars Salman Khan and Akshay Kumar! While Salman Khan sees a release after a long time [his last was 'Saawan - The Love Season where he was seen only in a special appearance], Akshay Kumar is maintaining his reliable stint with the super success of 'Phir Hera Pheri', hence reinforcing his hold at the BO.
Another reason is the sharp business acumen of Sajid Nadiadwala and his instinct and ability to churn out block busters right from JEET, JUDWAA, HAR DIL JO PYAAR KAREGA and MUJHSE SHAADI KAROGI to name a few. These are some of the reasons Ashtavinayak must have factored into account before buying the rights for a record breaking sum!
Whatever be the reasons to buy the fillm, one thing is for sure that the box office collections of 'Jaaneman' would now be in scrutiny, at least in the Mumbai territory, to see how far do they go before Shree Ashtvinayak at the least break even. And if the film indeed manages to do this in Mumbai, the biggest territory in India, the day is not far when 40 crore plus collections for a film would be termed as common for any biggie!

'Salman is my lucky mascot' Arpana (IANS)
Mumbai, June 21, 2006
Well-known Bollywood producer Sajid Nadiadwala, who teamed up with Salman Khan for the first time in 1996 for Jeet, says the actor is his lucky mascot.
They have worked together in four films, of which Jeet, Judwaa and Mujhse Shaadi Karogi were blockbusters, the fourth, Har Dil Jo Pyar Karega, was not.
"Salman Khan is a good friend. He is like my younger brother maybe SK (the initials) is lucky for me... Just like K is lucky for Karan Johar," said Nadiadwala. He says the 'SK' factor has played an important role in the success of his production house.
Nadiadwala's banner had recently invested Rs 1 billon in three new directors - Shirish Kunder (Jan-e-Man), Sajid Khan (Hey Baby) and Sabir Khan (untitled film) - all with the initials SK! To a question on the risk factor involved in investing Rs 1 billon in new directors, he said: "I am aware of the risk factor. It is a calculated risk. As a producer I am confident that I will not regret my decision.
"I come from a family which has been three decades in the industry. The idea is to expand my production house and make films with new directors. Since I am hungry for fresh ideas and innovation, I have signed on new directors."
