Real chief backs down on transfer pledge

MADRID, Aug 14 (Reuters) - Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has admitted that the three players he promised to sign during his election campaign will not now arrive at the club this season.

While campaigning for the president's job, Calderon said he would sign AC Milan midfielder Kaka, Arsenal's Cesc Fabregas and Chelsea winger Arjen Robben but the players' clubs have refused to negotiate their sale.

Calderon said Real's decision to call a halt to their bid to sign the trio was because coach Fabio Capello and sporting director Predrag Mijatovic felt the side had other needs.

'I would have liked all three to have come,' Calderon was quoted as saying on Real's Web site on Monday. 'But my first condition was that their arrival depended on the decisions of Capello and Mijatovic and right now they aren't a priority.

'I'm not going to interfere in these matters.'

Milan attacked Real for their attempts to lure Kaka to the Bernabeu and vice president Adriano Galliani said he would do all he could to make the Spanish club's life impossible.

Calderon said the Serie A side had responded by trying to sign Ronaldo but he said the Brazilian striker would remain with Real.

Real have signed former Juventus players Fabio Cannavaro and Emerson and Dutch striker Ruud van Nistelrooy from Manchester United during the close season and are now trying to close a deal with Arsenal for forward Jose Antonio Reyes.

Real lose interest in Cesc and Robben

Real Madrid president Ramon Calderon has admitted the club will not be signing the three players he vowed to buy during his election campaign.

Calderon promised to recruit AC Milan playmaker Kaka, Arsenal starlet Cesc Fabregas and Chelsea winger Arjen Robben while running for the presidency this summer.

But he now claims the club have abandoned the pursuit of all three internationals due to new head coach Fabio Capello and sporting director Predrag Mijatovic's decision to explore other avenues.

"I would have liked all three to come but my first stipulation was that Capello and Mijatovic must decide," Calderon told Marca.

"Now we don't have these priorities. I don't intervene in these matters."

Milan president Adriano Galliani was determined to thwart Real's move for Brazil superstar Kaka and the Italian giants were highly critical of what they called the Spanish club's attempts to unsettle the player.

Calderon accused the Serie A side of responding by launching a bid for Real striker Ronaldo but the Madrid president insists the Brazilian is not for sale.

"We want him to continue with us," he said.

Calderon also rubbished suggestions Real were about to offload midfielder Guti, who has been linked with city rivals Atletico.

"He is our player and I don't think he wants to go," Calderon said. "Furthermore, we see him as a fundamental piece of our team. We don't want him to go."

One player seemingly on his way to the Bernabeu is wantaway Arsenal winger Jose Antonio Reyes, and Calderon is optimistic of completing the transfer soon.

He said: "The player wants to be with us and it's in the hands of Mijatovic, who is looking for the best solution to close the deal."

Madrid president says Milan keen on Ronaldo

MADRID, Spain (AP) - Brazil striker Ronaldo reportedly wants to stay with Real Madrid despite interest from AC Milan.

"Milan wants him, and that's certain. They suggested a move through (Ariedo) Braida, the one in charge of their signings, who said he had spoken to the player," Madrid president Ramon Calderon told sports daily Marca on Tuesday. "From the people close to him I know he wants to stay although in soccer anything can happen."

Ronaldo, who spent five years in Milan with rival Inter before joining Madrid in 2002, has two years left on his contract. Last season, he threatened to leave Madrid due to criticism from supporters.

Madrid coach Fabio Capello reportedly prefers recent signing Ruud van Nistelrooy in attack. The Brazilian has yet to play under Capello as he is sidelined with a knee injury.

Yet Calderon, who is hoping to end Madrid's three-year drought without a trophy, said a place in the team could be found for Ronaldo.

"I want to speak to him, and of course (sports director Predrag) Mijatovic. Fabio says that he could play with van Nistelrooy," he said.

Spanish reports last weekend suggested Madrid could offer Ronaldo to Milan in exchange for Kaka, who was a pre-electoral pledge of Calderon's.

Yet Calderon said Capello believes the more defensive Mahamadou Diarra of Lyon would suit Madrid's needs more than Kaka.

"He (Kaka) would have been marvelous for us but perhaps this year isn't the right time," Calderon said. "Kaka wants to come. Firstly because he would earn what he wouldn't earn anywhere else and secondly because he would gain in prestige.

"The doubt is whether it is worth spending so much money when the coach's priority is someone else who goes by the name of Diarra."

MADRID, Spain (AP) - Real Madrid may offer Ronaldo to AC Milan in exchange for Kaka, according to Spanish news reports on Sunday.

Milan is reportedly keen to bolster its attack by signing Ronaldo to replace Andriy Shevchenko, who left for Chelsea in May.
And Madrid could take advantage by using the Brazil striker as a bargaining tool for acquiring his compatriot Kaka, whose arrival was a pre-electoral pledge of the club's new president Ramon Calderon, sports daily Marca said.

Ronaldo, who spent five years in Milan with rival Inter before joining Madrid in 2002, has two years left on his contract but is believed to be unsettled. Last season, he threatened to leave Madrid due to continuing criticism from supporters.

The Brazilian's position appears to be further weakened by reports that Madrid's new coach Fabio Capello prefers recent signing Ruud van Nistelrooy to spearhead the attack for the new season rather than Ronaldo.

Ronaldo has yet to play under Capello as he is sidelined with a knee injury.

Milan has so far refused to countenance the transfer of Kaka - who is under contract to Milan until 2011 - but could change its mind if Ronaldo is offered, the paper added.

Madrid's interest in the attacking midfielder drew an angry response last month from Milan vice president Adriano Galliani, who referred to Calderon, sports director Predrag Mijatovic and his assistant Franco Baldini as "bandits."

Calderon sought to defuse the row by writing to Galliani, saying it was all a "big misunderstanding."

Kaka, who played for Milan in a 1-0 win over Atletico Madrid in a preseason friendly on Saturday, appeared unconcerned by the speculation.

"In this matter, those who decide are Milan and Real Madrid. I have played my part and I'm very happy with my team," Kaka was quoted as saying by Marca on Sunday.

Ronaldo who is injured, didnt make the trip to US with Real, and has a bad realtionship with the fans there! Might be we can work smth out here! But Kaka wants to stay put in Milan and Capello does not want to push Ronnoe out...well thats what I read. Ho pe this is a mere rumour.

Ronaldo will be a great signing actualy. I will be happy. Him and Kaka can play! Ronaldo is very proficient and can still score a lot!

Exactly and thats why I am against the idea of Ronaldo moving to Milan.

you see what i mean?

http://www.marca.com/edicion/marca/futbol/1a_division/real_madrid/es/desarrollo/678316.html

selling their best player in their youth system to Atletico. you woudln't see Barcelona selling Giovanni Dos Santos right now.

Real has no patience with their young players. Yo dont become a superstar overnight, get them in the first team and introduce them little by little and in a year or two you'll see results.

This is not unique to Real. Many clubs do it.

All sales might not make the front page, but i know that many big clubs sell their youth players to other clubs to help them in their development.

The first team only has 14 spots and there is alot of youth talent floating around Real. They have to balance the two.

Additionally, Real Madrid has one of the critical fan bases. They demand results every game or you would hear it. The Bernabau is not the ideal place to groom young talent. The atmosphere is too hard and can do more damage than good in most cases

yeah, yeah, yeah. real apologist.

this was a sale, not a loan.

put them in cup ties, put them in CL games when the team has already clinched qualification to the next round, bring them in games that you are winning and ease the process in which they are incorporated into the team.

what happens when you get a few injuries in the senior side? when you have suspensions? you will have no one behind them that can fill in for them and give you any type of guarantee.

its not rocket science we are talking here, many clubs, including Real, have found ways to bring in young players into their teams. up to them if you want 10 foreigners and Raul on your team.

up to you if you want to continue seeing pathetic displays by the Spanish national team in WC and Euro tournaments - dont ask why they always have dissapointing results - 'cos all the key positions in the big clubs are taken by foreigners.

Why Real Madrid will flop miserably this year..

I will be the first one to acknowledge the glorious culture, history and achievements of Real Madrid in the European Soccer.. Just i wanted to clear a couple of points and iam sure most of u will agree with me if u carefully manipulate on my points..Yea, agreed that Real Madrid r one of the giants in the European soccer, but then for the last few years, they have achieved very less in Europe and also in their own Liga..Well, if u gleam through the history of Real Madrid, all their major successes have come during the Franco regime which coincided with the presence of many luminiaries in their teams with Destefano and Puskas heading the list..They did maintain that record for quite some time but then, it seems they have fallen flat in the last 4 years..The reasons for this is definately not the lack of talent in the team but i think it is rather because Real Madrid has become rather market oriented now a days..Ironically, after they won the Champions in 2002-2003( remember they had won the previous edition too), they shockingly dropped the author of their success Vicente Del Bosque and their rock, yea the skipper who selflessly served them for 12 years, Fernando Heirro..

it was shocking to be polite and in the same season, they brought in David Beckham( obviously for marketing reasons and after all it is a well known fact that the incumbent has a great fanfollowing in the crowded asian countries more for his marketing strategies..) Also, they got players like Graveson who would never fit in the scheme of things and in the way Real has always been known to play their soccer..The result was all there to see..Well, they have not seemed to learn from their mistakes and it was a shock to see them sign players like Emerson (no disrespect to him, but then he is similar to Graveson in his style) and Cannavaro( 33)who is probably at the prime of his career.. They surely lack the players of the calibre of Redondo( a wonderfully gifted midfielder who could run circles aroung opposite players)or Kaka or maybe Ronaldino..These players r the playmakers who can alter the match with a single moment of magic and yea, another big mistake was to let go Makelele who was a magnificient defensive midfielder..And with the retirement of Zidane, the place he has vacated is very tough to fill and with all main stars hovering around or above 30( Ronaldo, Rudd, beckham,Emerson, Canna,Guti,Helguera, Raul...), i dont see them giving Barca a run for their money in the domestic league or in the CL , i dont see them advancing further than quarters against the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool, ACMILAN, Lyon, PSV,Arsenal, Bayern..
