Juventus relegation appeal fails

Juventus have failed in their attempts to gain readmission to Italy's Serie A.

Juve were relegated for their role in the match-fixing scandal that rocked Italy and were docked 30 points, which has since been reduced to 17.

The club's appeal was held at the Italian Olympic Committee's arbitration court (CONI), but Italy's football federation refused to back down.

Juve, who were stripped of their last two titles, said it would consider its plans in a board meeting on Monday.

They finished the 2005/06 campaign as "champions" but were soon embroiled in one of the biggest scandals to hit Italian football.

Along with Lazio, Fiorentina and AC Milan, Juve were accused of attempting to exert influence over referees.

Lazio and Fiorentina were also initially relegated before being re-instated to Serie A with points deductions of 19 and 11 respectively and have, like Juve, been banned from European competition.

AC Milan start the new campaign in the top flight with an eight-point penalty, while Reggina have since been implicated and docked 15 points.

Juventus chairman Giovanni Cobilli Gigli had said the Turin club expected the same punishment as the other clubs.

CONI's conciliation court brought together Juve directors and the Italian Football Federation to seek an agreement regarding the club's appeal, but a Juve statement said the meeting had "not resulted in any conciliation".

"We will examine all of our options calmly, convinced as we are, in our search for a more fair punishment," said Cobolli Gigli.

He added they could potentially take the case to another Olympic Committee department or go outside sports justice to a civil court or even to the European Court of Justice.

Their demotion to Serie B has led to a number of their top players leaving and their fourth-quarter revenues slumped by almost £15.7m to £27.5m.

The other three clubs and several individuals who were punished by the tribunal are also taking their cases to CONI in the coming weeks.

ROME (AP) - Juventus has failed in its attempt to get a lighter sentence in Italy's match-fixing scandal.

Juventus wanted readmission into the elite Serie A, but said in a statement Friday that the Italian Olympic Committee's arbitration court had rejected its appeal against relegation.
The club said it would consider its plans in a board meeting on Monday.

A ruling on July 14 by the Italian soccer federation stripped Juventus of its last two Serie A titles and relegated the Turin powerhouse to the second division.

An appeals court on July 25 cut Juventus' point penalty from 30 to 17.

After the second ruling, Juventus said the sanctions were still "excessive" and vowed to appeal "through all possible courts."

The Olympic committee's board of conciliation and arbitration is the highest body in Italian sports justice and has the power to uphold or rescind sanctions in sporting disputes. Recourse to the board is mandatory before any appeals to the civil courts.

ROME (AP) - Chile midfielder David Pizarro joined AS Roma on a ?6.5 million (US$8.32 million) transfer Saturday from Inter Milan.

Pizarro signed a four-year contract with Roma worth ?1.75 million (US$2.24 million) per season.

Juve court move threatens delays for Serie A
« Reply #259 on: August 22, 2006, 10:45:07 AM »
Reply with quote

MILAN, Aug 21 (Reuters) - Italian football faces the prospect of a legal battle further delaying the start of the season after Juventus, demoted following a match-fixing scandal, announced on Monday they would be turning to a civil court.

A sports tribunal stripped Juventus of their last two Italian titles and demoted them to the second division Serie B where they will start next season minus 17 points.

The Turin club failed in attempt to regain their top division status via the Italian Olympic Committee's (CONI) court of conciliation on Friday prompting the board to vote unanimously to turn to the Lazio regional court which has special rights to rule in sporting matters.

Juventus said in a statement that they would turn immediately to the Lazio court while 'evaluating, within the time consented, an appeal to CONI's court of arbitration'.

Three other clubs implicated in the scandal - AC Milan, Lazio and Fiorentina - all maintained their Serie A status but were handed points penalties for the upcoming season.

The start of the Serie A championship has already been put back by two weeks to Sept. 10 and if Juve were to be successful in getting the regional court to suspend their punishment there could well be a further delay.

In the statement Juventus said that their relegation had resulted in top players leaving their club and would have 'serious consequences' on their income.

But the club also appealed for their broader, historic contribution to Italian football to be taken into account.

'It (relegation) will also, above all, gravely damage the identity of Juventus FC, which in over a century of existence has contributed to writing the history of Italian football with a tradition of excellence which is alive and current as demonstrated by the nine Juventus players who took part in the recent World Cup final,' the club said.

Italy beat France in July's final in Berlin with Juve players on both sides.

Juve's demotion has led to a number of top players leaving the club, among them Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro, who has gone to Real Madrid and Sweden forward Zlatan Ibrahimovic, sold to Inter Milan.

Coach Fabio Capello has left for Real Madrid and has been replaced by Frenchman and former Juve player, Didier Deschamps.

Juve's fourth-quarter revenues slumped by almost 23 million euros to 40.3 million euros.

The club said the uncertain outlook linked to the failure to take part in the Champions League and their relegation to Serie B would hurt results in the 2006/07 fiscal year.

Juventus to appeal fixing sentence again

TURIN, Italy (AP) - Juventus will appeal to an administrative court to get a lighter sentence in Italy's match-fixing scandal.

After a board meeting on Monday, Juventus said it was appealing to the court - the Tar of Lazio - because of "the unjustified gravity of the sanctions and the lack of equal treatment with respect to the other clubs" involved in the scandal.

A ruling on July 14 by the Italian soccer federation stripped Juventus of its last two Serie A titles and relegated the Turin powerhouse to the second division.

An appeals court on July 25 cut Juve's point penalty from 30 to 17.

Lazio and Fiorentina, two other clubs implicated in the scandal, were readmitted to Serie A by the appeals court.

An attempt at arbitration last week also failed to reduce Juventus' sentence.

The Tar of Lazio is slated to convene on Sept. 6. If the July 25 decisions are suspended or annulled, the start of the Serie A and B seasons on Sept. 9-10 could be delayed.

ROME (AP) - Appeals by former Juventus executives Luciano Moggi and Antonio Giraudo in Italy's match-fixing scandal were rejected Tuesday by an administrative court, the Tar of Lazio

Moggi, Juventus' former general manager, and Giraudo, the club's former chief executive, each received five-year bans from soccer under sentences handed down by a sports court last month.

Juventus was stripped of its last two Serie A titles and relegated to the second division with a 17-point penalty.

Juventus has also appealed to the Tar. Its case is scheduled to be heard Sept. 6.

It seems that AC Milan is gonna sign Ricardo Oliveira. Ricardo Oliveira, the striker of Real Betis, for about £10m which is definitely a lil high, but this guy is good! I dont know if you have seen him play. He was out most of the last season due to an ankle injury. He moves amazingly. I am excited! His agent is the brother of Ronaldinho so all the newspapers here in Milano are saying samrt move to get to the cake!

What do you guys think?
