Spurs looking to strengthen

Tottenham will rekindle their interest in Wigan defender Pascal Chimbonda and Middlesbrough winger Stewart Downing after selling Michael Carrick to Manchester United for £15million.

Carrick will complete his move to Old Trafford on Monday after agreeing personal terms and completing a medical.

The England midfielder, who turned 25 on Friday, rejected a new deal at Spurs to join the Red Devils.

The former West Ham star had two years left on his current contract, but brought negotiations to a halt and admitted he wanted to leave White Hart Lane for the Theatre of Dreams.

The north London club made a profit of just over £12million on Carrick and already have Ivory Coast international Didier Zokora as a ready-made replacement.

Martin Jol, who failed to hide his disappointment at Carrick's decision to walk out on the club, will now use the cash to seal Chimbonda's move to London.

The Dutchman had wanted Carrick to return the loyalty shown to him by Tottenham's management after his arrival from Upton Park.

Jol regularly picked Carrick ahead of previous first-team star Pedro Mendes, who later left for Portsmouth, and in preference to Edgar Davids last season.

A disappointed Jol said: "This is a move that Michael wants to make. We have given him every reason to stay, but he has asked to be allowed to leave."

Spurs fought hard to keep Carrick after they dismissed United's initial offer of £10million earlier this summer. But the player's request to leave for Old Trafford left the club in a no-win situation.

However, Jol now has the chance to meet Wigan's valuation of Chimbonda after they turned down an initial £2million offer from the White Hart Lane outfit.

The French defender is due to return to the Latics this weekend and has not changed his mind about moving after handing in a transfer request last May.

The 27-year-old is determined to move to a bigger club despite Paul Jewell admitting he is ready to offer the player a lucrative new deal in an effort to keep him.

Tottenham's search for a left-sided midfielder will again focus on Downing after they failed to persuade Chelsea's Damien Duff to make the switch across London.

Spurs are understood to have had at least one bid rejected by Middlesbrough and new boss Gareth Southgate insists he wants the England winger, who has four years left on his current contract, to stay.

However, Boro might find it difficult to resist a vastly increased offer from Spurs who are desperate to find an answer to their lack of balance on the left.

Arsenal will be back on top this year. They have had a season in which they have learnt how to play together and will again be a force. Chelsea may not have it all their way as Ballack and Sheva will have trouble adapting to the premier league.

Ur doubting Ballack and Sheva? We'll see just who will kick Henry's ass. Arsenal will have to let Chelsea win if they want to spare red faces.

I am tired of hearing about manchester united and who they are going to sign. No one wants to go there- Riguelme,Ribery,Torres, diarra, essein, obi mikel, robben..... should i keep going. It is so pathetic that th had to spen $34 million dollars on Michael Carrick. C.Ronaldo wants out, rooney is a great player but hopefully man utd has a great anger management staff. They treat there players like crap....RUUD, The teams leading goal scorer can't get in a game and now he is gone and they think just Rooney and Saha with a old solsjaer and and super young Rossi are good enough. With Carrick, a decent player, with Oshea(a center back), Giggs(a 35 year old left wing) and a old scholes and fletcher(a scotland international)all in the heart off the midfield. please manchester is overated and i am tired of all the news headlines and hype being about them. They are a uefa cup team and no better.

With the present situation at Old trafford I pose this question how much wiil Fergie cost Inited some school of thought say Fergie should only be accorded with 40% of the blame but I pose this a top notch business for e.g HSBC has a C.E.O that takes over 20yrs ago and makes huge profits for the company then 17yrs as ceo he starts goin senile and losses the company money and they start declining WONT HIS BUT BE KICKED OUT? So i think Fergie desverves 80% of the blame wat do ya think?

Fergie is making it a habit to have great players sold to Madrid and that at cheap prices. Man U almost lost Christiano too, and theydon't have a spectacular mid field, they haven't found a replacement for Keano and Smith has to regain his touch.
Meanwhile, RVN is going to be getting the service he deserves from the Madrid midfield, what he did get his first year (Remember when United didn't always struggle to win by more than a goal?)

Well I still firmly believe that Arsenal will bring the bang.

There will not be the colour of Red to celebrate. No Man U, no Liverpool and no Arsenal. Its Blues and its Chelsea.

40% Fergie- one has to wonder if he's just disintrested at times. I mean, if you've climbed Everest, where can you go next? I think it's just fatigue from the daily soap opera...
40%Upper Management- Let's face it, i'm a Sri Lankan, and i'm embarrased that one of the most popular clubs on the planet is being run by owners who no nothing of it's history, passion, or its fan base. BOTTOM LINE THINKING WILL ONLY PUT YOU ON THE BOTTOM
20% players-speaking of passion, what happened to it? when did it get to be ok to be average? The work ethic isn't there and i have to begin to wonder how much of these player moves aren't being done specifically to apease rooney...IS HE THAT IMPORTANT?

Ankhi I feel ur frustration.

This is the year of the Reds. Rafa Benitez has quietly built a well balanced squad with quality players and no big name egos. He has adapted well to the style of play in the Prem and I think they realistically have a shot at it.

I'm not saying its gonna be easy, I am certain Chelsea will put up a fight and then theres always the ManUs and the Arsenals to consider. But trust me I have looked into the crystal ball. It is the year of the Reds. Put 100 quid down on that.

Just messing with u guys, But seriously what are your predictions for next season's Prem Battle

Excellent idea, i'll put money on Chelsea too...kidding (odds wouldn't pay much). I would like to see Liverpool take its place back in the world's elite, especially with ManU sliding, but i'm afraid its Chelsea....till the billionaire gets bored(sigh!).

I never doubted Ballack's and Sheva's abilities but am just concerned as to how will they fit in the Premiership. Of course Lampard will be there in Chelsea to give you the crappiest ball pass and miss ever existed in the history of football.
