Sania Mirza wins the WTA Newcomer of the Year Award.
Sania Mirza has won the WTA ‘Newcomer of the Year’ Award for the year 2005. She won the award over her performance during the year when she rose to a career best ranking of 31 after being ranked 163 at the start of the year.
Some of Sania’s major achievements in 2005 was winning the Hyderabad Open, reaching the fourth round of the US Open singles, reaching the third round of the Australian Open singles and defeating three top 10 players including the reigning US Open Champion Svetlana Kuznetsova.
Sania Mirza was honoured at the second annual joint ATP and Sony Ericsson WTA Awards ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel in Miami on Tuesday. Sania dressed in a deep blue salwar kameez said during the ceremony, “It’s great. I’m really lucky to be here tonight and honoured to be among so many greats. Tennis is so competitive these days and this seems pretty unbelievable.”
Meanwhile, Roger Federer and US Open champion Kim Clijsters were named the 2005 ‘Players of the Year’ and also won the ‘Fans’ Favourite Award’.
