Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee’s “Black� is world’s 10 best

Selected as one of the world’s 10 best movies of 2005, by Time magazine, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Black� starring Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukherjee, is certainly a different movie if you go by Indian “masala� cinema standard. Time magazine has put Germany’s “The White Diamond� and “Grizzy Man� at the top, and “Black�, which is an unofficial remake of the 1962 US film “The Miracle Worker�, is in the 5th position .

Regarding the movie, the magazine commented, ‘‘This is an unusual film for India: no songs, a running time under two hours, and most dialogues in English, yet it became a box office hit. It could also be a test for western audiences unused to the fever pitch of Indian melodrama; they may need a warning label— Caution: extreme sentiment (may be contagious).’’
Further, the magazine said, ‘‘Everyone else can dive right into the bathos and savour the brave, passionate performances of Amitabh, who harnesses gravity and humor to his magisterial machismo in what may be his greatest role and the two Michells … who revere and adore their teacher as the one man who matters. In so many Indian films the deepest searches are for romantic ecstasy and for reconciliation with the father figure. By addressing both these needs, Black is more than a noble weepie; it is the ultimate Bollywood love story.’’

60 foreign films have qualified for the 63rd Annual Golden Globe Awards, which precedes the Oscars, and the three Indian films nominated are “Black�, “Paheli� and “Veer-Zaara�, and who else but Amitabh Bachchan and Rani Mukerji star in all three films. Shahrukh Khan stars in two !!
Amol Palekar’s “Paheli�, starring Amitabh Bachchan, Shahrukh Khan and Rani Mukherjee has already been nominated as India’s entry to the Oscars. Shah Rukh also stars in Veer-Zaara , Yash Chopra’s romantic film, a love story which overrides the Indo-Pak border. The story of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s “Black’ is very touching. It is a story of a deaf and blind girl (played by Rani Mukherjee) and her mentor (played by Amitabh Bachchan).

So desifans, please keep your fingers crossed and pray for the final verdict !
