India Cricket : Rahul Dravid Test Captain ! Ganguly steps down.

Rahul Dravid has been selected to lead the Indian cricket team for the three-Test cricket series against Sri Lanka beginning on December 2. Kiran More, chairman of the selection committee, announced on 22 November, the decision to give Dravid the reins of the Test team as well after deliberating on the much-speculated issue. Former captain Saurav Ganguly was out of ODI earlier, now out of captaincy in the Test series, and only chance left for him is to be included in the Test squad, if selected by the committee who will decide the Test team on 23 November, at Chennai.

In a dramatic move, soon after being removed as skipper of the Indian Test side on Nov 22, Sourav Ganguly stepped down as captain of Bengal team for the coming Ranji Trophy match against Maharashtra beginning on Nov 23, 2005. Samir Dasgupta, team manager, confirmed from Pune on Nov 22 night, “Sourav wants to give opportunity to younger members to groom themselves for the future. He told me that vice-captain Deep Dasgupta should lead the side in his place. Sourav will guide Deep. Saurav Ganguly feels that it was high time cricketers like Deep learnt the tricks of captaincy as Bengal’s future lay in the hands of players like him.” Samir Dasgupta said that Ganguly informed CAB joint secretary Saradindu Pal of his decision and got it approved.

Rain and a soggy pitch washed out the third ODI between India and South Africa on Nov 22, at Chennai. The 4th ODI in the series is to be held in Kolkata on Nov 25, but the generally enthusiastic cricket lovers of Kolkata showing no interest in the game. Till Nov 22, evening, only 3 days prior to match, less than 50 % tickets are sold, an unheard of incident, in the history of Eden Gardens stadium.
