Bollywood: ‘Yahaan’: A different film on Kashmir
Director Shoojit Sircar’s debut film “Yahaan” is different from so many Indian films on Kashmir. Release on July 29, at a time when Mumbai was hard hit by rain resulting in poor viewers , the film is trying to cash in on the subject with a glimpse of virgin lands in Kashmir, which were left untouched by Indian filmmakers for various reasons, predominantly security restriction.
“No one can control the release of a film, let alone the weather conditions after release. Sahara, our partners, have their own protocol for releasing films. As it is ‘Yahaan’ was delayed by about four months. I’m glad to see it in theatres,” Shoojit is telling as a matter of fact, not complaining about it . ” ‘Yahaan’ is the first ever movie made in never-before-seen locations in the state. The film was shot in places like Habakdal and Tanhipura where no movie had been made before. These are places outsiders are hardly aware of,” claims Sircar.
“I was there when Charar-e-Sharif (the 1995 burning down of the Sufi shrine) and Hazratbal (siege of the shrine around the same time) happened. I was there when Kashmir went up in flames. It troubles me greatly. We’re all responsible for the persecuted and isolated feeling of the average Kashmiri. ‘Yahaan’ is my homage to those years of self-exploration that I’ve undergone in the valley.”, Shoojit spoke in his soft voice, and added, ‘’Also in the film I have made an effort to bring out the emotional aspects of the life of people of Kashmir - their rich cultural traditions and their warm hospitality towards outsiders,'’ Sircar said.
Yahaan is a love story between an Indian Army Officer and a Kashmiri girl “Adaa”, played by Jimmy Shergill and newcomer Minissha Lamba.
Now Shoojit is into his second film. Titled “Amarjeet” it’s the story of a small-town girl, played by Lara Dutta who takes on the tobacco industry. “It’s not really inspired by the Hollywood film ‘The Inside’. The only thing in common between their film and mine is that they’re both exposes on the tobacco industry.” Shoojit confirmed.

I am a Kashmiri and I think the Film SUCKS big time. Kashmiri people have NO (ZERO) interaction with the ARMY. Let alone give them tea and the ARMY is a professional organisation, it’s officers won’t ask for tea the way it is shown in the movie. Depending on the situation, the army will either shout for it or ask. They wont say “chai milegi” ! NO KASHMIRI goes near a BUNKER - its forbidden and NO Kashmiri GIRL will EVER TALK TO AN ARMY GUY.
This movie has done just one thing: Made Kashmiri people prostitutes of the Army - Love between Kashmiri Girl and Army is an impossibility, in Kashmir. The director has been shouting its a true story for more press coverage. The true story Zich Nad Zero
